"As Connected As We Are"

Review:  Jude: Live At Largo - March 27, 2002 (Los Angeles, CA)

(This review was originally posted to the judediscuss yahoo group)

Two thumbs up, ten outta ten stars, A+, the whole nine yards...

Before the show I got to chat with fellow list members Adam and Meggie...great seeing you both again!

Jude appeared on stage with a drastic new hair cut, which Adam referred to as a buzz cut.  Not every guy can pull it off in my opinion, but he looked pretty good.

So Flannigan, the owner of Largo, comes out and introduces Jude by saying Ladies and gentlemen welcome Please put your hands together for Jude.  Then Jude comes up to the mic and says, Usually I just go right into a song, but I want another introduction.  So Flannigan comes back out and says Would you check out this mother-fuckers new haircut.  Jude!  Jude laughs, then breaks out into song.

Im Sorry Now

02.
Indian Lover

03.
Your Eyes - this was perhaps the best version Ive heard of this song.  its sounding more and more finished each time he plays it.

04.
George

05.
Battered Broken - a few people were requesting this one along with gay cowboy and brad and suzy.  luckily this one won.  I LOVE this live!

He puts down his guitar and travels two footsteps over to the piano.

06.
Megaladon - someone requested the shark song

07.
Everythings All Right - this song is so beautiful on the piano!

08.
The Asshole Song

Back to the guitar.

Out Of LA

10.

11.
In Between

*somebody yelled out for Brad and Suzy, and someone else yelled out I second that.  And Jude was like we have a second, anyone wanna third that?  Any objections?

12.
Love Letters

13.
I Still Believe In Love - someone in the audience asked him how Nashville was, and he said it was great.  Then played us this song, as an example of how things went in Nashville.  He said that he had a meeting with some writers or something, and he told them he was stuck on this song and sang to us the I still believe in love...I will believe in love... outro from The Rider Comes for those of you who downloaded that MP3.  So then he sang to us what the Nashville team came up with for the rest of the song.  The lines were pretty cheesy, but I have to admit the melody was pretty and lets face it...a lot of Judes lines are cheesy (Love has many faces, I dont know what they all mean anyone?)  Anyway...he said that he considered giving this song to Cher, but then in the middle of singing the chorus, he sang Ricky Martin here I come.  Ill piece together the lyrics a little later and post them.

Adelle, you might wanna consider cashing in on this song...because he uses a line something along the lines of Life is long, love is longer.  Sound familiar??  :)

Red Room

15.
Brad And Suzy
*false start.  he was playing the guitar and singing sort of held-back, but then he stopped after the first few lines and was like wait, let me get my groove and then he started playing it will full force.

in the middle of the song he was saying how he enjoys playing this song at college campuses, because when he gets to the part in the song where he mentions all the soroties and stuff, the people in each sorority he mentions scream out, and the sororities he doesnt mention just stand there with their arms crossed.  he also went on to say that in college he actually had a room in a sorority house, which showed how much the girls thought of him as the youre like a brother to me kinda guy.

he also broke into a short rendition of I feel like making love.

16.
dancing around (now known as "Waltz")
he dedicated this song to Liza Minelli and her husband.  but right before he went into the song, he brought up how the Olsen Twins made $950 million last year...but they have to split it.

17.
Sit Ups - He said before playing this song:  Do you wanna hear how a song gets ruined?  I call this song Frankenstein  He sang the first verse and then said how someone had told him thats a real good start to the song, but he needed a really big chorus.  So then he sang the chorus once, and then sang it again, breaking it down line by line and referring it to something that sounded like a Lionel Richie song.

He was like:
Everybody wants to be the king of the world - okay, sure.
I know its never gonna happen - wait, are you talking to me?
If I could wake up - wait what? - in the morning and look at your beautiful face - who?
I know its gonna be a wonderful day.

Its a lot more disjointed and put together than I had realized!

18.
Gay Cowboy - okay, this was a riot.  during one of the choruses, when he was singing about wanting to find someone elses hair on the back when he climbs in the sack, the women in the audience were cheering loudly, and he commented that its always the women cheering, and he never hears the men.  So at the next chorus, after he sang where a friend is a friend without shame, I yelled out a huge yeah!!!  And that got him laughing pretty hard...which was great.  Not to toot my own horn, but a lot of the people in the club were laughing.  So after a bit he asked if I would do that again, so I did, but then he told me to wait until he came around again.  So he sang that line again, and again, I yelled out yeah!!!  It was a really cool moment for me :)

19.
I Know - the last song he sang before leaving the stage.  before he sang it he said its about that time of the night to leave your tips, and he said even though he makes fun of the staff, theyre great people...and like most people in LA, they were looking for fame, but unfortunately for them, Largo is their end of the line, so they need all the money we could spare.  And he asked us to please give because if we didnt, theyd give him dirty looks for his joking.

Luckily (or expectedly) he came back on stage for an encore and was greeted by flashing strobe lights.  He said: You know, when youre opening up for say, Dido or Chris Isaak, you usually only get one spotlight and theres usually a guy in charge of lights who says Itd be a shame if your light when out during your set, and so you have to pay him an extra 100 bucks.  he then went on to say he contemplated whether itd be cheaper to just hire a big muscled body guard to stand over the light guy during the show.

He then sat at the piano.

20.
The Not So Pretty Princess - at Adams request.  This song is also BEAUTIFUL at the piano.  He mixed the new KING OF YESTERDAY version of this song with the old Thats My Maria version as well.

21.
Dance Floor - strobe lights highlighted the chorus.  he pondered why this song sounds like a polka when he plays it at the piano.  AND THEN some girl screamed during the song, and he was like: Okay, heres what well do, when I sing show me your love, that girl screams and then the gay cowboy guy yells 'yeah!!!' again  (hahahaha....FINALLY he refers to me as the gay cowboy guy!) So he sang that part, the girl screamed, and I did my yeah!!! thing again, though I guess I came in late, cuz he said okay, were gonna do it again, but dude, you gotta come in earlier.  dont f*ck it up for everybody.  So once more he sang his part, but then the girl didnt scream, so we had to try it one more time.  He sang his part, the girl screamed, and I yelled out, and together, we made beautiful music...lol.  And once more at the end of the song, he did it again, ending that song.

22.
I Do - He asked if it was a bad sign that despite how well he was connecting with the audience he was thinking thisll probably be the last song.  And if it was a bad sign that he was contemplating whether to finish the scotch he had on stage or if he should get a new glass at the bar.

He then went on to say how about five years ago he started lying about this song.  And went over the lie of how he had this girl in college, loved her, lost her, introduced her to his best friend, and witnessed them fall madly in love and get married.  He said it was all a lie, but in the lie, he mentioned how hed play this song every night for the rest of his life because he had to go and put it on a record.

Then he also went on to say how he got a certified letter in the mail requesting him to sing this song at a wedding.  They offered him a lot of money, but he wanted to make for absolute sure that what they wanted was for him to be at their wedding while they were in love and he was standing there -- alone -- singing about how his wedding never happened.

This was the last song of the night, and he left the stage shortly thereafter. They announced over the PA that at the door Jude was selling some CDs, along with pictures from Lizas wedding :)  I think the CDs were the Youre So Hot I Love You EPs, but I didnt get a good look.  Anyone know?

After the show, I hung around with my two pals Valentina and Danielle, along with fellow list members Adam and Meggie and their pals and we went over to where Jude was hanging out at the bar.  He was in a conversation with a guy, so the eight of us just hovered around for a good fifteen minutes just waiting until finally Valentina whispered Jude...youre wanted.  At that point he signed Adams picture and thanked us all for coming out.

All in all...this was probably the best show Ive been to at Largo in a long time...the great selection of songs, the presence of all my friends, the interactions with Jude...great great great show!!!

Judes gonna be playing three more Largo shows next month (the first three Tuesdays...ack!  thats Buffy and 24 night!!!!) But hopefully after that hell get around to his west coast tour so others can share in the joy!!!!
