| "the request show" jude show review: march 13, 2002 (this review was originally post to the jude discuss list) right before the show, Jude had the club play an except from a book on tape narrated by Ivana Trump. it was a cute idea, but lasted waaaaayyyy too long. 01 - George 02 - I'm Sorry Now 03 - You Mama You 04 - Battered Broken - a request from someone in the crowd. interesting note: when he performs this live, he starts off with the "ooohhh" part and goes directly into "hey little girl..." completely skipping the intro of the song which is: "everything had to be exactly as you had planned it..." 05 - Rick James 06 - Love Letters - a request from someone in the crowd 07 - Life Lays Me Down 08 - "Needles And Pins" - a request for a cover song from last week. he said he was sorry to disappoint them but he didn't know this song, and sang his thirty second interpretation of what he thought it might sound like. 09 - Happy Together - YAY! this was my cover request from last week that I wrote down for him to play. I'm so glad he did it. it was just as I imagined it would sound with him singing it...simple, pretty, and a funny story in the middle (about how he once met the writer of this song and he was totally drunk, the writer, not Jude) 10 - Red Room next was a sort of country song cover marathon, starting with: 11 - El Paso - by Marty Robins ("Out in the West Texas town of El Paso I fell in love with a Mexican girl Nighttime would find me in Rosa's cantina Music would play and Felina would whirl" 12 - On The Bayou - I don't know who it's by, but it's that song that's featured in the movie Steel Magnolias at Julia Robert's reception where Olympia Dukakas and Dolly Parton are commenting on the woman who's dancing and who looks like her dress his filled with two pigs fighting over a blanket or something. 13 - Lucille - by Kenny Rogers ("you picked a fine time to leave me Lucille. with four hungry children and a crop in the field...") he was singing "with four hundred children" instead though, saying that he used to think that was how the song went and how he thought Lucille was pretty f*cked up for leaving him with that many kids. 14 - Love Love Love - one of his new songs that features the "outro" of his live performances of Life Lays Me Down and sometimes Out Of LA at the piano: 15 - King Of Yesterday 16 - The Asshole Song - this was a HILARIOUS performance. He sang it with an over-the-top British accent for the first verse, then sang it in any accent people called out for, including Rhode Island, Boston, and one other that skips my mind at the moment. 17 - Cuba 18 - Your Eyes - I yelled out for this song, and he said it's only a couple of verses so far and it's not finished but he sang it anyway 19 - Rio - he did a couple of bars of "her name is Rio" and was questioning whether the line "she makes me feel good like a birthday or a preview" is in that song or in "hungry like the wolf." 20 - Everything's All Right - this song featured probably the most audience participation I've heard yet. 21 - Paper Towel - another request from the crowd. 22 - Out Of LA/She Gets The Feeling - he tagged on "SGTF" at the end because someone requested it from the crowd. 23 - Heart Shaped Box - a beautiful complete acoustic performance of the Nirvana song. amazing...though I kept expecting "george" to cut into it at any moment. 24 - In Between - another request. 25 - I Do - yet another request. I almost felt like requesting "anything BUT I do," because at that late in the evening, this is not the best song to keep you awake. encore 26 - Gay Cowboy - he got the door man EJ to come up and sing with him. 27 - I Know - the closer. again, not the best song to keep someone awake that late in the evening :) outfit: black or possibly dark blue suit with groovy beige sweater vest. all in all...one of the best shows I've been to because of the variety of songs performed (that and it was my 20th time seeing him...which isn't a jab at anyone who hasn't gotten a chance to see him, but a personal highlight for me.) if I think of any more details later, I'll be sure to share them here. |
