"Anything You Want To Hear"
review:  jude @ largo - march 06, 2002 (los angeles, ca)

(this review was originally posted to the jude list on march 11, 2002)

So it's been a busy week for me and a lot of the detail of the night have
gone right outta my mind...but I'll try to jot down what I remember!

He came out to perform with no opening act...which was nice because that
meant that the show would be over sometime before midnight. (Do these shows
really have to be in the middle of the week...?)

He was wearing a white t-shirt with marroon borders around the neck-line and
the ends of the sleeves. There was also a picture of an Indian Chief on the
front of the shirt. (or is that native american chief...?)

Setlist:

01 - I'm Sorry Now

02 - You Mama You

03 - George (I still have to praise this song live...it's absolutely
brilliant.)

At this point in the show, he told us something along the lines of: "That's
it. That's the big opening. I don't have a setlist tonight, so I thought
I'd just take some requests tonight and do whatever I want." At which point
someone called out for Love Letters, and Jude said "Absolutely."

04 - Love Letters

05 - Rick James - at the end of this song, he tried doig the "nifty" guitar
solo ending on his acoustic, but didn't quite pull it off, so he just kinda
stopped and said "whatever."

06 - Prophet - right before launching into this song, he said over the guitar
intro something along the lines of: "so in the middle of that last song I
almost ripped my thumb-nail off and I think I broke my toe just by standing
here."

After this song, he asked if anybody else had any requests, and a few people
yelled out for some stuff. My friend encouraged me to yell out for
something, but I've never been the type of guy to yell out requests at shows.
However, there was a moment of silence, and I surprised myself by yelling
out for "The Rider Comes." At that point, he said, "sure, I think I'll try
and do The Rider Comes." And in my moment of absolute giddiness, I yelled
out "Thank you," which got Jude to laughing, then he mocked me and was like
"thank you" in a falsetto voice. It was a cute moment that I was honored to
be a part of!!

07 - The Rider Comes - this is one of my favorites of the new songs.

08 - Gay Cowboy

09 - King Of Yesterday
- played at the piano...which is absolutely f-ing
gorgeous. He then segued (almost) seemlessly into "The Asshole Song."

10 - The Asshole Song
- he goofed and sang the 2nd verse first, then played
it off and started improvising lyrics. He came up with:

"That's not the right lyrics but I guess I'll keep going.
Sometimes when I segue from one song to another
My lack of professionalism is showing."

11 - Sarah Goodnight

12 - On The Dance Floor

13 - Waiting For You
- a new song. I think it's unfinished because it's only
like a minute and a half.

14 - Megaladon

15 - Out Of LA

16 - I Do

17 - Soft Tissue Neil - a little improvised song for the soundboard operator.

18 - Cuba - again, he called this his expensive song. he said that it's
caused him to go bankrupt, then laughed. he also said that he thinks it
saved more lives at "a particular company in town"

19 - Love Love Love - or "love is all you should be thinking of"

20 - I Know - the closer.

the encore:

a few more requests:

21 - Indian Lover

22 - Everything's All Right - audience participation with the "ba ba ba"
parts where the horns would go.

and at the "I think it's time" part in the song, he said, "there's no better
segue than that, so I think it's time to say goodnight."
