"ahead of the curve"
jude show review: january 28 2003

Im kind of running on low-energy here, so Im gonna try to just breeze through this review before I get started on some school work that Im already behind on :-)

- Intro by Comedian Patton Oswalt - This was absolutely the best intro to Jude that Ive heard at Largo.  Patton Oswalt (a supporting actor on the CBS sitcom King Of Queens) had to kill some time while Jude was tuning his guitar (Patton to Jude: How much longer you gonna tune?  Is this tune town?).  Jude then asked Patton (off the mike) if he should play slow or fast.  So Patton asked the audience: Do you want him to play slow...OR TEAR THE ROOF OFF THIS MOTHER-FUCKER?!?!?!  The crowd cheered for fast.  Then Patton re-emphasized the question to: Do you want him to tear the roof off the mother-fucker or FUCKING GO SLOW, MAN!! SLOW AS SHIT!! SLOW THE SHIT OUT THE MOTHER-FUCKER!  Good stuff.  Then, cuz Jude was still tuning, Patton went on to say how Judes performance was going to make us want to throw our shit at Bob Dylan.  It would be a big fuck-you to the Beatles...and a big fuck-you to any Arista people who may be in the crowd.  Hmmm....this guy seems to be a big fan of expletives.  Maybe I should rate this review.  TV-M, for mature audiences only.  Anyway...finally Patton got serious and intro-ed Jude with Ladies and gentlemen, one of my favorite singers in the world, and hes probably going to play one of my favorite songs tonight...ladies and gentleman, Jude!

- Money - he started to play a few chords, then had to stop himself from laughing at Pattons intro.  He restarted and the song sounded great.

- Love Letters - hes been adding a tag to the finish of this song at recent performances: His love, it was larger than letters, he could not conceive of the loss.  He was one of the silent regretters and he held to her hope like a cross.

- Homerun Hillary - Great version of this song.  But for the first time, Ive really paid attention to the lyrics of this song...and I just dont get it.  Anyone wanna throw some insight my way?

- Indian Lover - After the first chorus, right after Jude sings Feel my joy, we could hear a police cars siren blaring outside of the club as it passed by.  It added a very cool mood to the song, and even Jude commented that it was kind of nice.  He then tried to emulate it, using his voice to make a siren sound.

- You Mama You - Not much to say about this song...except, damn, those lyrics are pretty fast.

- Rick James - He joked during the middle of this song about how he used to be able to get the crowd laughing when hed be playing solo shows and say this is where the band would come in.  He said he was gonna try it when he played the college in Maine on the 1st and hed let us know how it went.  Speaking of which.....whats up with that show?  Did anybody go to it??

- Interlude - IRS + Pop Songs - He took a break between songs to tell the story of a recent meeting he had with his manager and some IRS people.  It pretty much ended with him saying, that now in order to raise some money, hes writing pop songs, thats my new things obviously.  Then he said hed be playing a spade of pop songs next.

- All I Wanna Do - after the first chorus of this song, he started singing in melody about how he got this song on Alias, and how that paid one month.  He ended the song abruptly, saying that that song was sold so it was time to move on.

- Your Eyes - He intro-ed this song as another pop song, but added that I like one.  He then told us to imagine it to a pop beat.  Towards the end of the song, he started going all lounge-act with the song...saying thank you after every line, and then pointing to people in the audience when he sang It could be you.

- I Know - Again, not much to say about this song, except for that it just really shone as one of his best songs, sandwiched between two of his newer poppier songs.

- Dancing With The Devil - As expected, this song got some laughs from the audience...also, he changed a few words here and there from his last performance of it.

- King Of Yesterday - See the description for I Know.

- Dance Floor - Funny stuff.

- The Asshole Song - Towards the end of the song, he started playing the piano part at least two octaves above its normal key (are those the right musical terms...I like to pretend that I know...but I dont.)

- Save Me - Hes been playing this at the piano.  But I like it better on the guitar.

- Cuba - He told a story about how this song didnt go over well with his record label, and how a war of words erupted between him and the head of the label (not Madonna).  I wont go into details...but one part that I found funny was Jude describing how he told the label guy that he obviously didnt know much about irony, and the label guy responded with dude, we put out a song called Ironic.  Jude kind of silently nodded, and mentioned that the song was sung from the perspective of an untrustworthy narrator, which went over the head of the label guy.

- Gay Cowboy - Jude joked about how he was going to sell this song to Marvel comics for their upcoming Rawhide Kid movie.  He mentioned that once again, I was ahead of the curve, telling my stories like an old man.  It doesnt make much sense in the context of this review, but it was funny at Largo :-) Oh yeah, he also told yet another Nashville-related story to this song...this time the response in Nashville was there doesnt seem to be a real Christian spirit to that song.

- Everythings All Right - audience sing-along

- Out Of LA - He added some more cool bits to the outro of the song.

- In Between - This was the first song of the encore.  My tape stopped recording about here, so Im just going by my memory here, which isnt nearly as good as it was a month ago.  Hmm..I wonder why.

- Charlie Says (Foreigner Style) - Jude started incorporating some Foreigner lyrics into this song.  Oh, I guess I should back-pedal so the funny of that sentence comes out.  During Patton Oswalts opening set, he had a whole bit about how Foreigner was, like, the devil of 80's music.  So yeah, theres the funny.  Again, I guess you had to be there :-) As Rae reported earlier...Patton came up during the part where Jude starts singing Ive Been Waiting For A Girl Like You, and mentions how we dont know the evil that is taking place right now.  The sound of evil is coming out of the mouth of one of his favorite singers.  Then the Lord Of The Rings joke abounds and Jude sits at the piano, mumbling in his best Gollum impersonation about his precious.

- Turn The Radio On - Giving up on Foreigner, Jude sang this instead.  The first chorus featured different lyrics than hes played before, but by the end of the song, he had reverted to the chorus hes played before.

- Sarah Goodnight - He ended the show with this song, which was MIA the last few months.
