High on Fire, The Bronx, Big Business, Buried Inside, and Valient Thorr - Jan 29th, 2006

Oh my, this was one of the best shows in quite some time. It was great to see the Milestone packed. And with 5 great bands playing.

So first up was Valient Thorr. I've heard lots of good things about them but I wasn't sure what to expect. Well they have lots of hair, that's for sure. It was really cool. They play fast kick ass rock and roll, kinda like Turbonegro or something like that. So they were all over the place. We got to hear stories about coming from Venus and something about giant rubiks cubes attacking. Then he made everyone get down low and talked a while and finished off with another song.

So next up was Buried Inside. I got their newest cd a few weeks ago and was really impressed but it's one of those I wasn't sure how good it'd be live. But they did a great job. It was cool. I don't think some people "got it" and others found it hard to get into but oh well. I was into it and I liked it.

Next up was Big Business. A rocking duo. They were cool. I have to say I spent part of their set in line for the bathroom and some of it talking to Matt and Joe from High on Fire. I liked what they did though, they are worth checking out.

So next was The Bronx. They play a kinda crazy punk stuff. So I was up front with all the punk people, mostly. The Bronx put on a crazy high energy set. The singer was all over the place, he'd come out with the crowd during songs and stuff. I really loved this set. It was fast, crazy and lots of fun. (for some reason, that last sentence sounds too girly...oh well it's late.)

So last was High on Fire. Of course it was awesome. It's everything I expected. It's one of those times I've got into that zone where I'm just feeling it. The best part was Matt liked the crowd response so he was really into to. They played a good long set, and all the songs kicked ass. I mean they even replayed Devilution for their encore, so I got to sing along and stuff twice!

So overall I was very impressed. The show was great. The turnout was great. And the one that really surprised me the fans were really into. I usually think of charlotte crowds as tending to be a little dead, but this was good. Maybe this is a sign of things to come.
