This class was about the special library. What is a special library, you may ask...well a special library is one that serves any special group or special need. It can be in a business, or a government agency, or a seperate library on a university campus, or just about anywhere else you can think of. So this class only met 5 times but we met all day and we took some visits to some various special libraries, which was cool, and showed how they operate. Mint Museum Library Site Visit Assessment - This was a visit to the library in the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC. They have books on art and history that pertain to the collection. They also have some very old and rare books which I always like. The Charlotte Observer Site Visit Assessment - This vist was to the Charlotte Observer Newpaper. The library is there in the news room. It really doesn't look much like a library. Mostly they archive stuff electronically and search online sources so there are only a few shelves of books against the back wall. Here's something interesting, newspaper writers may be the the most unorganized people in the world, you should see their desks. Jail North Site Visit Assessment - This was a visit to the Jail North in Mecklenburg County. It's a library for the prisioners (yeah we saw prisioners). They have all the types of stuff a public library would have except they have an extensive, up to date law collection. Carolinas Medical Center Library Site Visit Assessment - This vist was to the library the Carolinas Mecical Center in Charlotte, NC. It's mainly a clinical referece library for doctors and residents. It's also used by doctors in the region and nurses training nearby. They have a nice looking library but I don't like doctors enough to work in a place like that. Mecklenburg Law Library Site Visit Assessment - This visit was to a library in one of the county buildings in uptown Charlotte, NC. It's not actually run by the county though. It's nice if you like all that legal stuff. Term Paper - At the beginning of the semester we had to choose a type of special library, I chose science libraries. Then during the class we had to find out information about it and write a paper. This is that paper. Not terribly exciting. A online journal that had lots of sources I wanted to use went down the day I started doing the paper, so that kinda screwed things up for me.
