Entry for April 2, 2008
It's been awhile since I have posted here, and now that I have it linked to my blogspot page, I will attempt to keep my yard observations here and get to work on keeping this website going again. We'll see what happens. With April here, and the approaching spring, and the last of the snow most likely going to melt today (again--it just keeps coming back), thoughts of keeping up the garden are again starting to excite me. On tap for this spring: 1) First and foremost is our new patio that will be built along the west side of the house, most likely being done this month, when and if the ground thaws. This will add some more garden space, another tree--always good for the birds and the wildlife, as well as a hedge of arbor vitae surrounding the patio. It will be short to start, but will eventually provide a great place for the birds to come. Another bird house will be put in the patio as well, providing another opportunity to attract more birds. 2) The cutting out of the grass along one side of the property line on the east side of the house. Right now, the area is home to a crabapple tree, a weigala, two butterfly bushes, and a hackberry tree--the one I got at last year's Arbor Day celebration here in town. We will probably also move one of the dogwood shrubs from the front of the house to this area as well. Since right now, it is all in a grassy area and difficult to mow around, I want to get r id of the grass there and replace it with rock, thereby avoiding the mowing problem. It will also hopefully make the butterfly bushes more noticeable. 3) Cutting out the grass between the gingko tree and the bird feeding station and planting flowers here. I have some ordered already, and maybe get some more that make good butterfly and hummingbird attractants. The bird bath will also go in this garden as it is flatter than most other areas in the backyard, plus I won't have to worry about killing the grass where the birdbath has been put. So it will be a busy spring, but so worth it, in my opinion. 2008-04-02 17:35:04 GMT
