Welcome to the King & Cos web page. King & Cos are a duo that plays a suprising variety of music. Virginia King and John Costigan perform often-ignored songs in a zany bi-polar array of styles. Folk, blues, jazz and rock, along with John's original songs "The Presidents An Alien" and "Were They Sore" tell stories of budding twits with biting wit. It's difficult to put a label on John's tunes as they are a synthesis of weird and abnormal styles. Early on he was influenced by Frank Zappa, English blues-rock and a bit too much Richard Rodgers. John studied three years at UW-Parkside with Augie Wegner which helped to refine his song writing a bit. He played in the pit band at UW-parkside for "Working", and was musical director for "Little Shop Of Horrors". He is currently playing with the Mr. Frickett Music Show, a band of highly talented has-beens that plays county wide. Virginia King, on the other hand, is coming in to her own as a local vocal phenomenon and guitar teacher. Performing recently at a club, she was sitting in for a friend gone west to a Chaos Theory seminar (playing roulette in Vegas). After her first song a man in the audience clearly asked: "What are you doing here?" If Joni Mitchell had never even looked at a cigarette, the voice she might have would sound something like Virginia. The guitar students she teaches get a healthy exposure to accompanying singers. There may be an element of self preservation at work there. If interested in booking King & Cos please e-mail us at the address below. |
