Galapagos Islands

Aug 1998

Hi Guys and Gals!
Today I start flying out of S.America after 6 months of outrageous FUN. I'm quite sad to leave this wondrous place but I'll be back!
I have just spent a week scuba diving off a live aboard yacht in the Galapagos Islands - Wow what a place. Dolphins leaping from the breaking waves, penguins, sea lions, iguanas, turtles, rays, ... and SHARKS. I finally got to go diving with sharks. And when I got down there, hanging onto the rocks in the current, I realised that these waters are shark infested. That's a good way to describe it because there were HUNDREDS of them! Hammerheads ranging from 1 to 3 m long only a couple of meters away. What a feeling watching these creatures cruise by in such large numbers. It's an experience I won't forget.
I also got to see a dolphin while diving (quite a rare thing). I saw big turtles, eagle rays and manta rays bigger than me glide by. Sea lions doing aquabatics, eels swim by, and schools of jack fish (hundreds and hundreds of them). I got in the middle of a school of jacks and spun around and around and all I could see was a wall of fish! There were all kinds of fish everywhere and they weren't all small!!!
On one dive I was at the back of the group when a 2m Galapagos shark (typical shark shape) started following me abit too close for comfort! Brown wetsuit time I can tell you!
All in all it was an experience of a lifetime. The Galapagos islands are very beautiful and whats under the surface of the sea is truly wonderful.
I consider myself very lucky to have experienced it.
Be lucky. Stay lucky!
Until next time ....
Love
Mark
