This is my exhaust system. I started with a 4" downpipe, at the bottom of the downpipe I added a piece of 4" flex made by EPI, both the take stress off the turbo, and to help eliminate the "drone" sounds so common with a large diameter exhaust system.
The pipe continues on using 4" aluminized pipe all the way to the back of the transfer case where I had enough room to expand to 5" diameter pipe. I used 1/2" diameter rod in the factory hanger locations. The rod was bent at a right angle, a washer welded in place, this slides into the rubber hanger and is held securely in place with another washer and cotter pin.
You can see from the photos I hit all welded surfaces with cold galv to prevent rust. Here's a cost breakdown on this system: 4" downpipe-this item was used but had less than 100 miles on it. It was purchased for my uncle's truck, he payed for it, then disapperead. FREE 4" EPI flex pipe $130 4" from flex to transfer case-leftover military surplus $5 10' length of 5" aluminized $90 2- 5" slip couplers $22 1-5" 15 degree bend $15 5" mandrel bent 90s-leftover surplus $10 US Gear chrome turndown tip $45 surplus 1/2" round stock $5 Under $350 I had a 4" into 5" exhaust system. There have been many claims of lost low end when using such a large exhaust system. Not so in this case, I lost nothing, but gained a LOT in mid and upper end!
I realize it's kind of hard to see here, but there is plenty of room over the axle for the 5". Most systems are bent like the factory system where they go over the axle. I guess to keep heat away from the truck bed? I simply ran the pipe straight back, once over the axle I dropped it down at a 90 degree angle, into another "almost" 90 degree bend that is angled toward the rear corner of the truck and into the 5" chrome turndown.
Take a look at those tires. Those are Pro-comp MT's....do you see how much tread there is? There's 60,000 miles on the tires in this photo....60,000 miles of towing, burning them off, truck pulls, etc. I know what tires are going back on here when these finally wear out:) And yes the speedometer was recalibrated after they were installed.
