Five Basic Types of Dance

 

These are five basic types of dance I have seen in scripture and in worship today. Many, many forms of dance are covered in these types.



1.) Spontaneous
     a.) Movement by God's Spirit
     b.) Movement by our spirit
     c.) Mostly personal worship



2.) Choreographed
     a.) Davidic dance
     b.) Company of dancers (Mechowlah) Jud. 11:34, Ex. 15:20
     c.) Round dance (Machowl) Ps. 30:11, Jere. 31:4
     d.) Circular movement, celebration (Chagag) Ps. 42:4, Zech. 14:18
     e.) Pre-organized modern movement (making a dance to music)



3.) Intercession
     a.) Priestly duty (1 Pet. 2:9, Lev. 9:7, Ps. 40:3)
     b.) Wave offering (Lev. 8:26-27, Num. 6:19-20, Num. 8:11,13,15,21)
     c.) Signs and symbols (Isa. 8:18)
     d.) Weeping (Psalms 126:5-6)
     e.) Travail/labor (Jere. 9:17-21)



4.) Prophetic
     a.) God expressing Himself in us and through us to others
     b.) Chuwl/ Khool (twist or whirl in a circular motion)
     c.) Movement with prophetic insight



5.) Warfare
     a.) Defensive praise (2 Sam. 22:2-4, Acts 16:22-26)
     b.) Offensive praise - pushing back enemy ranks (Matt. 11:12)
     c.) Militancy, army of dancers (Orcheomal) Matt. 11:17
     d.) Declare enemy's demise
