Examples of Dance in Scripture

 

These are different Greek and Hebrew words that show dance in the scripture. They are not a complete list and many times these words show up as "rejoice" or other such words in English. With them are the original meanings and scriptures that word is found in.



Chiyl (twist or whirl) Judges 21:21

Dalag (leap or spring) Song of Solomon 2:8, Isaiah 35:6

Karar (dance or whirl) 2 Samuel 6:14

Reqad (stamp, spring, jump, leap, skip) 1 Chr. 15:29, Ecc. 3:4

Pazaz (spring or leap) 2 Samuel 6:16

Pacach (hop, skip over) 1 Kings 18:26

Giyl/ Guwl (spin under influence of emotion/rejoice) 1 Chr. 16:31, Psalms 9:14

Alats (jump for joy, joyful, rejoice, triumph) Proverbs 28:12, Psalms 68:3

Towdah (sacrifice of praise) Hebrews 13:5, Psalms 42:4, Psalms 100:1

Yadal (lifting hands)Psalms 7:17, 9:1, 28:7, 30:9, 33:2, 42:5,11, 43:4-5, 45:17

Shachal (bow, prostrate) Ps. 5:7, 22:27,29, 45:11, 66:4, 81:9, 86:9, 95:6

Halal/ Halel (rave, boast, embellish) Psalms 150, 1 Chr. 16:4, Ezra 3:11
NOTE: this is the word from which we get "Hallelujah" literally meaning rave or boast of God (Jah).

Schacah (worship and bow down) Genesis 22:5, Exodus 34:8

Barak (kneel and bless) 1 Chr. 29:20, Neh. 8:6

Tehillah (combination of all types of dance) Deut. 10:21, 1 Chr. 16:35, 2 Chr. 20:22, Heh. 9:5
