INTRO NOTES
This post acts as an intro to my series of strat posts. Reading it will help u understand what the hell I'm going on about later.......
1) Life is too short to fill up posts with stuff like in my opinion, I may be wrong etc. etc. So if these comes across like I think i wrote the damn game, I apologise. For the record, I consider myself an Inter who dont embarrass himself in gp rooms, but still got a lot of work to do to be a gp, OK?
2) I'm always eager to learn new stuff whether from a gp or a rook, so if u have any insights or comments, post em in reply to the appropriate post from me. If u disagree with sumthin, dont flame me , tell me what u think the real truth is......
3) I use fairly obvious abbreviations for units and civ. Examples are : yassy, meaning assyria and / or yamato, CA meaning chariot archers, HHA meaning heavy horse arch etc. Again, life is too short to write chariot archers 20 times in a post when CA will do, and I'm spending enough time doing this in the first place.
4) All these strats assume coastal rev, for simplicity. Many will work on any map, some are type specific. I know we all play a lot of NR. I just find rev easier for working on strats , and then when I got em down, I apply em to NR. There will be a NR specific post too.....where there are map specific variations, they are clearly marked.
5) In all strats, assume that you never stop making vills unless told otherwise, and that house production is kept up. Bear in mind that when boating, you need to anticipate, and stay ahead of the housing limit more. If u miss a house, 2 vills can build one in the time it takes 1 vill to generate ( 25 secs) . Once in bronze, building more houses then you think you need never hurts..... unless you are short of wood ( and if you are so short of wood in bronze that u cant spare 30, ur in trouble lol )
6) Some definitions, as we all think about the game differently, and make up ways of expressing our thoughts on the game........
The "drop" is the first 2 minutes of the game. my standard drop is to build one house with 2 vills, and a pit for food and wood with the third. hit f11 and f4 for scores and timer, select ally chat and send " at x " where x is my map pos in standard clockface. The house builders collect food asap (maybe one may help finishing the pit) so does vill 3 after he done buildin. villas 4 and 5 also go food, 6 builds the second house then starts on wood. By the time vill 7 comes out, my food supply is up and running, and wood collection for more buildings has started...... You can get away with putting vill 5 on wood, not food if u are are fishing close to a pit, or if you are shang, tho I prefer 5 food myself.
we all know what "painting" is....
"boom" means a fast, exponentially growing expansion of population, whether of vills or boats it can also refer to certain army units ( ie CA boom )
to "choke"means to discontinue any activity, particularly economic expansion. an example is if i am boat booming, but stop building boats as i bronze to save wood, I have "choked" the boom
being " in excession " means that you are collecting more res than u need for any given activity. The most basic way of being in excession is if you have 6 guys on food at the start, but you are spending 50 a time for vills...... meantime you got 60 food, so you are in excession ( exceeding the food requirement to keep building vills ) by 10.
"mauling" a short sharp attack designed to kill villas and show you the enemy set up, but not necessarily to destroy buildings
"profile" means a set strat in terms of vill numbers and res split. an example is 21v/16f/5w, which means 21 villagers, 16 on food and 5 on wood. this particular profile is part of the fast assy bronze strat. got it? good.
"rush" means a military attack carried out quickly at the expense of economic growth. there are three rushes,: tool, bronze and iron. in each case the point is to get to that age asap, even at the cost of a weak(er) economy. combined with civ and unit, this defines a strategy ( ie cho tower rush, assy CA rush )
with those terms i can define ( to myself at least) an entire way of playing.
for example, when assy, I often employ a choked boat boom CA rush., with a 21v/11b/13f/8w profile using 2 dox. If u dont understand that, read the above again till it makes sense. Its fairly obvious..... with that one sentence, I have defined my pop growth, resource split , military unit of choice, and by implication, my tool and bronze time ( about 10.30 mins and then12.00 to 13.00 in this case.) Understanding how I express this will help u understand my posts better, and will save me a shitload of typing.....
