Hello fellow world citizens,
Kristin's mom, Judy, came to visit us here in Kingcome! She flew in with us, stayed for 5 days and flew out by herself.  I asked her some questions about her time here and what follows is the transcript of the interview.  These are not exact quotes, but pretty close - remember, I had to translate from Canadian to English:
What did you think of the seaplane flight?
(30 seconds of laughter) Do you put your arms through the window to help fly it? What do they do with no ground control? If my suitcase is too heavy does the plane go down?
How does Kingcome compare to what you thought it might be like? I had no preconceived notions, had no idea even though I saw the pictures.  It is farther away that I ever thought.  Breathtakingly gorgeous, I was awestruck.
Any comments about salmon? Most wonderful treat ever. Sure am glad I am a salmon lover! A great treat to have readily available.
Any other comments about Kingcome? It feels extremely isolated.  A wonderful place to have visited.  Great opportunity to see my kids here.
Any advice for future visitors? Travel light! I have never come with so few clothes before. I was wearing the same clothes again and again, but what a help! It helps going in and out of rowboats and seaplanes! Be prepared for adventure!
Well, thanks Judy for your visit and insight.  Check your suitcase for your parting gift of a sockeye salmon - hope you check your suitcase sooner than later...
During her visit, Judy took Kwak'wala language class with Nicole.  When asked what she learned in her 45 minutes in class, she claims, "I don't remember."
Our next visitors will be here in 2.5 weeks - We are soon ordering a "Kingcome Hotel" neon sign for above our house.
While we were out for Spring Break, we went to the annual MCC retreat near Hope, B.C.  That was nice to see some familiar faces and look at some new faces.  We also stayed for a while on Quadra Island, which is between Vancouver Island and the B.C. mainland.  We went clam digging and gathered some oysters - both of which are Nicole's new favorite foods.
We came back to Kingcome to the heaters being broken at the school.  We are thankful that it's not the middle of December, as temps outside are quite mild now.  Some space heaters and some odd resonant heat coming from the vents has kept it warm enough.
The town is hopping with people being excited about the oolichans coming soon! (Most of the excitement is coming from me [John]).  The annual return of these slimy fish should be any day now. We can't wait to see what this whole thing is all about.  Our cat can't wait either - a welcome respite from MeowMix.
It's good not to have TV right now as we hear and see less about the US war.
Take care everyone and be good. Keep in touch too.  Thanks for remembering us,
JohnKristinNicole
