Round 1: Shearwater Cape Schank Resort Course

Date 11th June 1999
Par 70 (35,35)
Length 5629 metres
Weather Fine and cold
Fairways Good
Greens Fast

Cape Schank Resort hosted the first round of the King Winter Cup.  Cape Schank is a seaside links course, set over a rolling layout with undulating greens and large bunkers.  The course plays fairly short so the short game is given a good workout and a lack of accuracy is punished severely.
The cold weather affected early scoring but it was Simon and Steve who warmed up first.  Simon almost put his tee shot into the hole on the 158 metre Par 3 5th, but the scorecard shows he walked away with a par.   Steve played the toughest hole on the course (364 metre Par 4 6th) well to take the lead, and both were 3 shots ahead of Mike by the 8th hole.  Mike struck back with a telling birdie on 9 to get back within 1 of the lead at the turn.
Simon looked intent on running away with the event on the back nine as Mike and Steve struggled to keep up with his cracking pace.  But the 17th proved to be a crucial turning point in the round as both Simon and Steve took an 8 on the 485 metre Par 5 while Mike grabbed an important par.  On 18, leader Simon pulled his tee shot left, opening the door for Mike.  A par to Mike put him 2 in front of Simon and 4 in front of Steve.

Round 2: Kingston Links

Date 13th June 1999
Par 72 (36,36)
Length 6178 metres
Weather Fine, cold, breezy
Fairways Excellent
Greens Soft, Fast

The King Winter Cup returned to Kingston Links in Melbourne, scene of the final round of the King Challenge State of Origin 1999 held earlier in the year.  Kingston Links was playing tougher than usual with a gusty wind but as normal was in sensational condition despite a lot of rain earlier.  The course is open, flat with links style rough, mounds and bunkers.  A lot of water comes into play if the game isnt 100%.
Mike threw down the challenge on the first hole taking birdie to open up the lead to 4 shots.  Steve parred the par 4 2nd and had his game working early into the second round, but a triple bogey on the tough 5th made things difficult for the boy from Sydney.  By the 9th Mike had his game firing after parring 7, 8, and missing par on 9 thanks to crap putting.  He took a 5 shot lead into the back nine.
Simon is always at home at Kingston Links and par on 11 and 12 cut the lead to 2 shots.  Meanwhile Steves key weapon "The King" was misfiring.  A par on the 13th hole maintained Mikes composure but Simon was coming home strong.  Pressure par putts on the 16th kept Mike 2 shots up.  Then on 17, a 400 metre dogleg left par 4, Simon hit right and Mike went straight up the fairway.  Mikes second hooked into the gallery and he finished with 7, Simon took 6 and there was one shot in it coming to 18.  Steves game was back but too late for comebacks.  Simons tee shot to the 162 metre par 3 18th was short left, Mike went left, both pitched short. Mike hit a long pressure putt close to almost ensure victory.  The bogey putt for the win was tentative and just fell into the cup!!!!
