What's the difference
between wireless and cellular?
- There is no
difference. They are just two ways of
referring to the same thing. The term
cellular comes from the way wireless
phones operate, by communicating with
radio towers that cover areas known as
"cells." Because cellular
communications are evolving to include
things other than just placing phone
calls, the term "wireless" is
being used more often.
What are
the differences between analog and digital
phones?
- Think of the
difference between analog and digital
phones the same way as the difference
between a traditional record album and a
compact disc. The CD, which is digital,
provides superior sound quality and can
store more music than the record album,
which is analog. The same holds true with
wireless phones. Digital phones are free
of the static and fading signals that
commonly plague analog phones. Digital
phones also provide greater call security
and typically provide longer battery life
and a wider variety of features. However,
digital networks do not cover as much
area as analog networks, particularly in
rural areas.
- Am I charged
when people call me? Unlike traditional
telephone service, you are charged
whenever your phone is in use, regardless
of whether you made the call or someone
called you. Some carriers have started
"caller pays" systems in select
markets. In a caller pays system, the
person who makes the call pays for it,
even if they are calling from a land-based
phone. However, caller pays systems are
rare, and the standard is that wireless
users pay for all of their calls.
What is
roaming?
- Roaming
refers to using your phone outside of
your home area. In most cases, you will
be charged additional fees whenever you
are roaming. There are no fees for having
your phone turned on while you are
roaming; you are charged the extra fees
only when your phone is in use. Certain
service plans, typically
known as one-rate or national calling
plans,
usually do not charge roaming fees.
