The Final Fantasy series started in 1987 with the first Final Fantasy for the Famicom (NES).  It was an immediate hit in Japan.  The origins of FFIX's Vivi can still be traced back to this games Black, White and Red Mages.
Final Fantasy II was released in 1988 for the Famicom (NES).  An English translation was almost completed, but Square had problems with Nintendo at the time and it was shelved.

In 1990 Final Fantasy III was released for the Famicom (NES).  Another Japanese-only release for this adventure, now challenging the popularity of Enix's Dragon Quest series.
Final Fantasy IV was released in 1991 for the improved Super Famicom (SNES).  This was an 'Easy Type' version and was released for US audiences on the Super Nintendo (SNES) as FFII; hence the confusion in numbering.
1992 came the release of Final Fantasy V for Super Famicom (SNES).  It featured a hero called Butz Klauser and his Chocobo steed Boco, this was regarded as the finest in the series, till.............
Final Fantasy VI for Super Famicom (SNES) in 1994.  Unlikely heroes oppose the villainous Kefka's usurping of the Empire.  So epic that global apocalypse is an interlude.
Final Fantasy VII was the first Final Fantasy on PSone in 1997.  The series moved to PSone rather than N64, because of the advantage of CD over cartridge.  The first UK FF release.
1999 came the second Final Fantasy on PSone with Final Fantasy VIII.  Super future high school love story with magic and guns.  TV ads used CG scenes to attract a wider UK interest.
Final Fantasy IX came out in 2000 for PSone.  The whimsical characters made it a disappointment for some, while others thought its the best since FFVI.
And alas, 2002 and Final Fantasy X is released on PS2.  Boy with strange past fights turn-based battles to save the world from a giant typhoon.  Final Fantasy X is a visually stunning and often mesmerising interactive movie.  It takes full advantage of Playstation 2's next-gen innards.
However, Final Fantasy XI has gone online in Japan.  The latest instalment of Square's Final Fantasy series was release in Japan on 16th May 2002 bringing the world famous Square RPG online for the first time in its 15-year history.
