SHUTTING DOWN WINDOWS

When Windows shuts down, it performs many tasks including closing all active programs and utilities.  If it won't shut down normally it is probably because it can't properly complete these shutdown tasks.

Try this: restart your computer.  After Windows starts, press Ctrl-Alt-Del to see the "Close Program" list.  This shows what's running on your computer besides the two normal Win95 programs, Explorer and Systray.  If there are other programs in the list select them one at a time and click End Task.  You'll have to press Ctrl-Alt-Del for each one since the window disappears each time.  When you've closed all programs except Explorer and Systray, try to shut down Windows.  If it shuts down normally it means that one of the programs in the list was causing the problem.  You can experiment to determine which one

SHUTTING DOWN AFTER A CRASH

What's the best way to shut down Windows  after a crash?

It is always preferable to shut down windows in the proper way, i.e. Click Start and choose Shutdown.  Sometimes the computer freezes and it is not possible to do this.

Sometimes a program crashes and it is possible to end the offending program by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del, selecting the offending program from the list, and clicking the End Task button.

Sometimes the mouse is frozen but the computer itself is not frozen.  In this case the program or the computer can be shut down using the keyboard commands.  For example Alt-F4 closes any window.  If the desktop is active, Alt-S clicks the Start button, the keyboard cursor key can move up to the Shutdown menu entry, press Enter, and press Enter once more to shut down the computer the proper way..
