Why did I get an "Out of Memory" error?

When you close a program the RAM should be restored if the program is well behaved.

Make sure you're letting Windows manage your virtual memory.  Click the Start button then choose Settings... Control Panel... System... Performance... Virtual Memory.  Make sure you let Windows manage your Virtual Memory.

You can get an out of memory message is your hard drive is full, because there is no room for the virtual memory swap file.  Make sure you have at least 60MB free on your hard drive.

You may not have enough free conventional memory.  Use the MS-DOS icon to go to a DOS prompt.  Type MEM <Enter>. You should show at least 500KB for the largest executable program size. I show 580KB on my computer (with my HP Scanner driver loaded).  If you show less than 500KB, remove the extra stuff from your config.sys file and autoexec.bat file by typing REM (space) at the beginning of the lines.  Windows 95 doesn't need these files, or any of the entries, with very few exceptions.  The only line in my config.sys file is my Scan Jet device driver, and there are no lines in my autoexec.bat.

If you don't have a conventional memory shortage, check to see what's running in Windows by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del.  This will list all of the programs and utilities that you have loaded.  Explorer and Systray are the only two required files.  If you have more, try ending them all by selecting them one at a time and clicking End Task.  These programs and utilities are loaded by icons in the Startup group and by the LOAD= and RUN= lines in your win.ini file.  In particular, eliminate all alternative desktops such as Norton or Packard Bell Navigator.
