Deleting Temporary Files

Windows 98 creates some files for its own use. When you shut down
Windows for the day, it's supposed to delete those temporary
files. Unfortunately, it sometimes forgets. After a while, the
dead files pile up. You'll need to purge those files yourself. To
see what temporary trash Windows has stored permanently on your
hard drive, follow these steps:

1.   Click Start, Find, Files or Folders.

2.   Type *.tmp into the Named box. That's an asterisk, a
period, and the letters T, M, and P.

3.   Click Find Now.

4.   Look at the dates of the files that turn up. See any
files that are older than a week or so? Copy them onto
a floppy disk for protection, and then drag the files
     into the Recycle Bin.

To be on the safe side, don't ever delete any files with the
current day's date. Wait a few days just to make sure that they
don't contain anything important. And even then, make sure that
you save a copy of the file on a floppy disk in case a program
starts begging for it a few days later.
