CD-ROM Not Recognized

I cannot access the CD-ROM from Windows...  I can get directory listings in DOS...  I tried to install new hardware and Windows 95 says No New Hardware Detected.

Confirm Registry Entries\Check for Real-Mode Drivers\Add New Hardware Using Manual Setup

1. Check for the Cd-Rom in the Registry:

- Click Start, Run, and type "regedit" without the quotes.
- Click the plus (+) sign beside HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then System, Current Control Set, Services, VXD, scroll down and locate IOS and left-click it (make it blue).
- Look in the right pane for a "NO IDE" entry, if found, left-click it, then press delete.
- Close the Registry Editor, reboot and check the results. Problem not solved, goto 2.

2. Your system may be trying to use incompatible real-mode drivers.

Click Start, Run, type "sysedit" without the quotes. The autoexec.bat dialog box will appear. Look for any line(s) which reference your Cd-Rom and place a semi-colon in the front of that line. Click the Config.sys dialog box to bring it to the front and do the same. Save the files, close the System Editor, reboot, then run the Control Panel's Add New Hardware to install new 32-bit drivers for your Cd-Rom. Follow any subsequent directions to reboot. Check the results. Problem not solved, proceed to 3.

3. Add New Hardware Manual Setup.

- Open the Control Panel, double-click the Add New Hardware icon.
- Click Next, the wizard allows you to choose betwen automatically or manually installing hardware, Select No and click Next.
- Choose your adapter - SCSI or CD-ROM adapter - from the dialog box depending on the type.
- Select the manufacturer, make sure the selection matches your equipment, "close enough for government work" doesn't apply here. Click Next.
- Click Print to output the recommended settings.
- Click Next to finish, and Windows will install the necessary drivers. When given the option to reboot, click No etc.
- Using the recommended settings, ensure that your Cd-Rom hardware settings, i.e., those seen in Device Manager, match those given.
- Once you've verified, or corrected, the settings in Device Manager, reboot the system and check the results.
