Lee Grant a.k.a. Luke Garner

Daring, Fearful, Observant,

A character in Margaret Peterson Haddix’s futuristic story about a 12 year old boy forced to secretly hide in the attic of his parents’ home and remain undetected by the outside world. He is one of the shadow children, a third child forbidden by the population police.

He loves the outdoors; breathing fresh air scented with clover and honey suckle, feeling warm soil beneath his bare feet and watching fluffy clouds float in a blue, blue sky.

He is an observant child who notices light leaking through slatted vents in his attic prison, revealing the outside world he desperately longs for. Through the vents he catches glimpses of window shades moving in another house and eventually spots a mystery child that piques his curiosity and inspires his dreams.

He feels desperate, alone and trapped within the confines of his four walls, unable to understand or believe that he must remain hidden for the rest of his life.

He learns to live in fear from the anxiety of his parents and yet is inspired to bravery by the adventure books that have become his alternate reality. He learns to live through his visits with another shadow child, a terrifying girl who makes his heartbeat, his palms sweat and his skin blush, with the curve of her cheek, the tilt of her head and her wild plans of being free.

He wishes for the chance to exist in the eyes of others; hopes for happy endings; Longs for courage to do the impossible and dreams of making a difference in the world.
