The Secret Within written by: Stephanie W. Lori Looking at the beach from the balcony has been my favorite thing to do since I was 6. It just seemed so calm and peaceful. The gentle breeze blowing through my hair, the warm beam of light against my back. Believe it or not, we get this kind of weather almost everyday! I live on Maui. If you don't know already, Maui is one of the Hawaiian Islands. I live with my mom, dad, and of course, my annoying sister. I've lived here my whole live as far as I'm concerned. I don't know what I'd do if we moved... "Lori! Hurry up, you're going to miss the bus!" a mysterious\annoying voice yelled. "I'll be there in a sec. Zeny!" I yelled back. Zeny is my little sister, she's 11. She has a soft complexion. Every time I look at her it seems as if there is a soft white ray of light shining down on her... She has light brown hair and her eyes are a soft blue. You know, Zeny isn't really all that bad. Even though I say she's annoying, she's not... well most of the time any ways. "Lori !!!" Zeny called out for the last time. "Mom, can I just go to school without Lori!" I complained. "Mom, are you even listening to me?!" "Now Zeny..."mom started. "okay, you know what. You win. It's just that on the first day of school and all, you'd at least expect to be at school on time." I groaned. "Ready!" Lori called out cheerfully. "What took you so long?" I asked. "Oh, just stuff I had to take care of," Lori shrugged. "Yeah, whatever Lori. Whatever you say..."I coughed just loud enough so that my sister heard me, "Yeah right! Were you on the phone talking to your boyfriend?" She glared back at me as if in response. I smirked. "Bye Mom! See you around three?" "Oh, no. Not this time. I won't be home till seven o'clock", my mom told us. This perked Lori's interest, "Why won't you be home any ways? Are you on the verge of selling another house? 'Cause if you are, I could use some extra cash." "Oh, that's a surprise. And no, I'm not selling another house, business has been slow lately. But I wish I was, we could definitely use the money." Mom sighed, "Look at the time. You two had better hurry up or you'll miss the bus!" I quickly grabbed my bag and ran out the door . "Oh my gosh! It's almost 7:10 right now! It's all your fault too Lori." I looked over at Lori, she didn't seem to mind that we'd be late for the first day of school. The first day of school of all days! Ugh! "Bye Mom! See ya later!" I waved good bye to my mom as I ran out the door hauling Lori with me. I faintly heard Mom say good bye. "Hey! What was that for? Twisting my arm like that wasn't exactly paradise if you know what I mean." Lori complained. "Sorry but you are just too slow!" I sighed. "I wonder what the surprise is. I just can't keep my mind off of what mom said. Hmmm... I wonder..." I studied Lori's face. She just turned 15 in August. She looked totally different from me. Now that I think of it, I guess I'm the one who's different... well compared to her. I just don't get it. She doesn't even look like she came from this family! Lori tends to blend in into the whole Hawaiian type scheme. She has dark brown hair and matching eyes. Sometimes her brown eyes look like they have a tint of green in them if you look hard enough. Weird ain't it? But, there's one thing about Lori. Throughout my whole life, Lori has kept complaining about how annoying I am. I don't mind though. I know deep down that isn't what she really feels about me, and because of this, I like to think of Lori as the wisest and smartest between the two of us. To tell you the truth, I think of her as my hero. |
