Patterns

Creating, copying, and extending patterns is a beginning algebra skill.  It helps students think about what comes next.  In kindergarten the students use beads and manipulatives to create, copy, and extend patterns; for example, blue, green, blue, green, blue...what comes next?  In first grade the students begin to focus on number patterns; for example, counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's.

Home Activity:

Use yarn or string and have your child make pattern necklaces with objects such as cereal, pasta, or beads.  Practice skip counting.  Have your child clap by 2's, 5's,and 10's as he/she is counting aloud.
