YOU'RE STILL THE ONE.
Matt stared out in the darkening sky, night was falling and if he didn't get through the traffic soon he would be too late to see James and his band take to the stage. He had already missed the first of the supporting acts, and the second would be waiting to take to the stage for their set.
Suddenly, the arena appeared away to one side of the duel carriage way, and Matt flicked his indicator to leave at that turning, concentrating so he didn't miss the signs that showed the way into the car parks that surrounded the vast building. Driving past those entrances, Matt drove on round to the huge gates that protected the stage doors and the massive loading bays. Holding his security pass up, Matt waited until the gates opened, and then he drove in and parked where the guard pointed.
Getting out of the car, Matt shut the door, and then walked away towards the stage door, pressing the button on his key fob to lock the doors of his car. There stood at the stage door was Adam, a flustered looking Adam, a much older looking Adam since Matt had first met him during Busted's first tour. But then a lot of things had happened since then, Busted had split, and then after a battle with the demon drink, Matt had finally gone to James and admitted that he loved him. To his surprise James had blushed and then replied that he had always loved Matt.
That had been five years ago, five years ago today. Matt had a table booked for just the two of them after the concert, and he had an eternity ring in his pocket to tell James just how much he still loved him.
All he knew was that James had said that he had to be there in time for James' solo, as he had changed it for tonight, and that it was imperative that Matt was there to hear it.
Following Adam through the backstage chaos Matt smiled, nothing ever changed, putting on a gig was as crazy an occupation as ever. Matt had given up performing on stage, and he now worked for Prestige, looking after one of their new up and coming bands. Fletch wouldn't give up the reins to James and his band, not even to James' husband.
Reaching the side of the stage, he grinned as he saw Fletch, hopping from one foot to the other as they played their latest number one hit. Patting Fletch on the shoulder, his grin widened as Fletch leapt a few feet into the air. Turning Fletch smiled and pulled Matt into a hug, before guiding him up to the edge of the stage so he was level with the band but out of sight of the fans.
Stepping up to his mike, Ben announced that it was time for James to do his solo, but that tonight it would be something different, a one night only performance, a special song for a special person. Instead of leaving the stage as they usually would the boys remained in their places, while James stepped back and handed his guitar to a roadie. Then he did something he hadn't done for a long time, he put on a radio mike headset, and stepped to the middle of the stage. Then with a glance at his band, they struck up the song.
Looks like we made it look how far we've come my baby,
We might have took the long way, we knew we'd get there someday,
They said, I bet they'll never make it, but just look at us holding on,
We're still together, still going strong
(Still the one.)
Suddenly, Fletch shoved Matt out on to the stage.
You'
re still the one I run to, the one that I belong to, you're still the one I want for life.
Blinking in the glare of the lights, Matt realised that the fans had gone quiet.
(Still the one.)
Still the one that I love, the only one I dream of, you're still the one I kiss goodnight.
James' voice suddenly sounded very close.
Ain't nothing better, we beat the odds together, I'm glad we didn't listen,
Look at what we would be missing.
They said, I bet, they'll never make it, but just look at us holding on, we're still together, still going strong.
Turning, he saw James stood right in front of him.
(Still the one.)
Singing.
You're still the one I run to, the one that I belong to, you're still the one I want for life.
To him.
(Still the one.)
Still the one that I love, the only one I dream of, you're still the one I kiss goodnight.
Telling the world that he loved him.
You're still the one.
(Still the one.)
You're still the one I run to, the one that I belong to, you're still the one I want for life.
Still the one.
You're still the one that I love, the only one I dream of, you're still the one I kiss goodnight.
I'm so glad we made it, look how far we've come my baby.
As the song ended, Matt smiled, and in front of an audience of thousands, pulled James into his arms and kissed him, whilst all around them the cheers reached fever pitch. Breaking the kiss, Matt looked down into a pair of sparkling blue eyes, and knew that the words of the song were true.
