Janos (John) Hlavacs was born in a town named, Kis Feketepatak. He came to America and arrived into the Port of Ellis Island on December 16th, 1906. He was twenty five years old at the time. He may have been traveling with the Cihaj family. The men went directly to Coal Ridge, Ohio and worked in the coal mines. Janos later sent for his wife, Mary (Maria) (Hrasko) Hlavacs. Mary came from the town, Haukova and arrived into Ellis Island on December 13, 1908 at the age of twenty. Their first child was born nine months later. Together they had nine children. About 1925, the family moved to the Cleveland, Ohio. During the day he worked at the "Three Sisters Department Store." At night, he worked as a janitor at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Cleveland. Later, Mary's mother (a widow at the time) came to America in 1920 and died two years later in Ohio.
