The Baum Family

This following information was given to me by my Great Aunt Madeline (King) Gandee.  This is the story she heard from her mother and grandparents growing up.  She was my grandmother's sister on my father's side. Her mother was Margaret (Baum) King, daughter of Henry and Wilhelmina (Fochler) Baum.

Letter from Madeline King Gandee:

"Henry Baum came from a wealthy family in Austria. They owned a Lime Kiln & Stone quarry and lived on a large estate with iron gates. Wilhelmina Fochler worked as a servant in the big house. She fell for Henry but was afraid to talk to him. One night they saw each other at a dance and fell in love. His parents died and each of the eight children received one thousand dollars (which was a lot in the 1800's). Henry, his brother Gustav and sister Mary decided to come to the new world in 1881. Henry and Gustav decided to go to Altoona, PA because they heard there was a lot of work. Mary went on to California and was never heard from again.  After a short time Henry sent money to Wilhelmina to pay her ship passage and she saild to America.  They were married in St. Mary's Church in Altoona.  My grandfather, Henry had a large brick house built and they lived there until my grandmother Wilhelmina died on Oct. 21, 1933. I lived in that house as a child. It is located at 2129 - 15th Avenue; Altoona, PA and is still there.  All of their fifteen children were born in that house.  Later, my grandmother Wilhelmina missed her parents so much, my grandfather sent money for them to come to America. They did and loved in a little house near by.  I never saw them but my mother (Margaret) told me this. I was living in my grandparents' house when my grandmother died and I remember it very well although I was only eight years old. I've told all of this to my children and grandchildren."

Signed,

Madeline Gandee

Note - My Aunt Madeline also told me that family rumor has it, the Baum family in Austria had over 20 servants at one time. The Baum family attorney had misused most of the family fortune when the parents died in Austria.  Leaving the children with a small portion of the fortune. Hence they came to America to start a new life. I met and got to know my Aunt Madeline in 1995. She was always fascinated with her family history for many years and collected data and pictures. I am thankful for the pictures and family stories that she had shared with me. She was delighted when I offered her the information that I had found and I am glad I got to know her in the short time I had spent with her.  She was a very special lady. Aunt Madeline passed away June 14, 2006.

Letter from a distant cousin researching the same lines:

"The Baum Family History"

Henry and Gustau Baum, accompanied by a cousin, Joseph Schroth left their native city of Freiwaladau, Austria in early summer of 1882. Their route would have taken them south into Italy., probably to the port of Naples, where they boarded a ship destined for the new world. What drew the Baum Boys, in their early twenties, the Schroth's, the Hammer's, the Fouchler's and the others from the same Austrian countryside to that small town in central Pennsylvania? Was it earlier arrivals who sent back word of Railroad employment or were they pure adventurers? These young men arrived at Battery Park of the southern tip of Manhattan Island, New York on October 10, 1882. For their immigration processing.  Their arrival was ten years before the opening of Ellis Island and four years before the Statue of Liberty.

Henry and Gustau both started working for the Pennsylvania railroad immediately.  On January 20, 1884.  Henry married Wilhelmina Fouchler, also of Austria.  They lived together at 2129 15th Avenue, Altoona and had fifteen children.

The Baum in German means "tree". The ship that they traveled on was the S.S. Elby.

End~

Location of Freiwaldau in Austria was located just outside of Prague. (My dream is to one day visit Prague, research my lines and see the beautiful architecture there!) The town is no longer there. However, I have copies of older maps of the Austrian Empire dating back to the 1850's. Click here for the map of that local area: Freiwaldau.

DOCUMENTATION

The following is a report of my research I collected of this particular family line.  For documentation on other family surnames, please go to my WorldConnect link located on my first home page. For the BAUM family, a lot of my research was conducted at the Carnegie Library in P.A. and the Western Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland.  The death certificates and naturalization records I requested via mail. I tried to keep the notes to three generations from Theresia Schroth. I have further information of living descendants to share with family members. All documentation was copied from the source as is, including all misspellings.

Five persons were killed and nine injured, one seriously, in highway accidents in the four-county area over the weekend. The worst highway accident in Cambria County in recent years occurred early yesterday morning near Gallitzin, when four persons lost their lives.

A St. Francis College professor's wife was killed....---snip-----

Four Altoona residents were injured fatally early yesterday morning when the automobile in which they were riding ploughed up a 10-foot embanekment and then fell 35 feet to the mainline tracks of the Pennsylvannis Railroad near Gallitzin. The accident occurred at the narrow bridge across the railroad tracks on Route 53 about two miles west of Gallitzin. State Police said the accident occured at 12:20 a.m.

The dead:

Louis L. Baum, 42, 2103 Thirteenth Avenue, Altoona; crushed chest, fractured skull and fractured right leg.

Miss Beatrice Worrell, 34, 1614 First Avenue, Altoona; broken neck, fractured right leg and internal injuries.

Joseph Scheirer, 28, 2108 1/2 Twentieth Avenue, Altoona; fractured skull and broken neck.

Mrs. Stella Scheirer, 31, fracture of skull and internal injuries.

Coroner Patrick McDermott said the bodies of Baum and Miss Worrell were badly crushed. They were killed instantly. Mrs. Scheirer died while being rushed to Mercy Hospital, Altoona, and Mr. Scheirer died a few hours after admission to the hospital. State Motor Police from Ebensburg said the machine, believed to have been driven by Baum, was traveling toward Cresson from Gallitzin.

MISSES CURVE

Upon reaching the sharp curve at the bridge approach the machine missed a guard fence, climbed a 10-foot embankement and plunged 35 feet to the railroad tracks. The car landed on the radiator and then turned over on it's top. All of the occupants were pinned in the wreckage. John P. Feathers, Claysburg R. D., a passing motorist, notified State Motor Police and the Cresson Volunteer Fire Company. Firemen hurried to the scene and worked for nearly 20 minutes to extricate the bodies. Body of Baum, pinned behind the steering wheel, was the last to be taken from the wreckage, firemen said.

Dr. A. M. Bergstein, Gallitzin physician, was called to the scene and administered first aid to Mr. and Mrs. Scheirer before they were taken to the hospital. The machine did not land on the railroad rails but struck between the east and west bound tracks. At the point of the accident the tracks are about 14 feet apart, the eastbound tracks being several feet higher that the westbound rails. Feathers informed Pvt. F.M. Boring of the State Motor Police that he saw the machine a few moments before it crashed over the embankment. Feathers said the machine was traveling at a fast rate of speed when it passed his aoutomobile. Three Johnstown men were killed in a similar accident at the same place about four years ago. The accident ocurred on October 23, 1936. The machine in which the Johnstowners were riding crashed through the fence and plunged to the railroad tracks. those killed were Robert Hess, Cyril George Edwards and Hamilton Suskie.

Coroner McDermott last night said he will hold an inquest at a later date in the accident, which was the worst highway diaster in recent years in Cambria County. He also said that the bridge and section of the road at the scene of the accident is one of the worst traffic hazards in the county. Rev. Father Gerald Stevens of Cresson who was called to the scene, administered the last rites of the church as the victims were extricated from the wreckage. The remains of Baum and Miss Worrell were taken to the Norman P. Casher Funeral Home., Cresson, early yesterday morning. They later were taken to funeral homes in Altoona.

Relate(sic) Stories.

Eyewitness to the fatality, in relating their story to Private F. M. Boring of the state motor police sub-station, Ebenburg, reported that the car, presumably operated by louis Baum, owner, had ascended the McCoy hill just before approaching the span at a "lightening rate of speed." It was traveling west toward Cresson. The investigating officer learned that the car had eluded a guard rail fifteen feet from the east end of the bridge, ascended a ten foot embankment and ploughed over to the left side of the embankment. On the other side of the barricade, the machine dropped approximately forty feet andlanded upside down along the right away between track No. 2 and 3. Three minutes before the car plunged over No. 3 track, a west-bound train had gone through, the investigation officer learned.

Leo Baum and Beatrice Worrel, who apparently were in the front seat, were thrown clear out of the wreckage. Baums body was lying directly under the bridge between No. 2 and No. 3 track. fifteen feet north of car, while the badly mangled body of Miss Worrell was hurled against No. 2 track, seventeen feet south of the demolished car. ........(two more paragraphs)
