"It is that time of year again when the U-21's donn the red and
white to seek championship glory. Caherconlish provided the venue
and Oola the opposition. As last year against south Liberties it
rained heavily but that did not dampen the spirits or enthusiam
of both teams that took to the field.
The game began with a frantic pace with the ball travelling from end
to
end the wind favouring Oola in the first half. Oola opened the score
with
a point and then a second. A good move up the field resulted in Kieran
Murphy
slotting in a goal. It was pretty even up to half time and our lads
were 2 points
behind and playing with the wind in the second half.
The second half proved to be very exciting with Oola stealing in behind
our defense
to score a soccer type goal we were 5 points behind at that stage.
Many teams
would have thrown in the towel but our lads battled on and Colin Ryan
managed
to find the net a second time for Kilteely/Dromkeen only 2 points behind
and
not so many minutes remaining on the clock. The last few minutes were
tense
we missed some scorable chances but kept on trying until we reduced
the
margin to one point. A fast ball into our forward line saw the Oola
defense
under pressure and caused them to conceed a 21 yard free. Anthony McCarthy
stepped up and put it over the bar. There was very little time left
and we
were after a victory it ended in a score of 2-8 a side.
The referee called for extra time, but Oola clearly shaken by the ordeal
were
having none of it and walked off the field. The outcome has yet to
be decided.
