Please include the following notes in this weeks county edition of
the Limerick leader for the Kilteely/Dromkeen GAA club.
"The club returned to its winning ways this week with two victorys,
in both football and hurling.
On Tuesday night we defeated South Liberties in the Junior B football
championship first round. The game was played in Cappamore and proved
to be an exciting occasion. We were one point down at half time in
a
score of Kilteely/Dromkeen 0-3 South Liberties 0-4. Liberties got the
better of the loose change in the early parts of the second half and
put over a couple of points extending their lead to 3 points. We battled
hard and fair and began to pick off a couple of points. We began to
turn
the tide and a goal in the closing stages of the game from Joe Hanley
put 4 points between the sides. Our backs stuck to thier task and
prevented Liberties from scoring. Some excellent saves for Gerry
Prendergast ensured that we won the game. A last chance goal for
Liberties which left us with a one point victory in a score of
Kilteely/Dromkeen 1-7 South liberties 1-6. The margin of victory was
irrelevvant it was the heart and determination which the lads displayed
to bring home the first junior championship victory of 2000. It is
important
that it doesn't end here, we take on Knockane next Saturday night and
if
we perform and stick to the task in hand we can beat them.
The momentum from Tuesday night overflowed to Sunday night when our
U-21
hurlers beat Fedamore in the first round of the U-21 hurling championship.
It is the first U-21 hurling team in the club since 1996 and set they
set
the scene alight on Sunday nigth in the opening stages of the game
when
points from Padraig Keogh, Anthony McCarthy and John English flowed
freely.
Though we were putting points on the scoreboard, Fedamore did not go
without
trying and always treatened attack but our backs were equal to the
task.
A mighty save from Noel O'Sullivan inspired confidence in the team
and we
replied with a goal from John O'Dea. We were up 1-7 to 0-4 at half
time and
knew that Fedamore were going to attack hard. We opened the second
half with
2 points before Fedamore responded. Our backs played brillantly preventing
Fedamore from scoring any goals pulling off some excellent dispossessions
turning defence into attack. John Ryan was Master at centre back and
his
dileverance to our forward line created great chances, One of the highlights
of the second half was a point from Kieran Murphy who intercepted a
ball in
the half back line travelled with it beyond centre field and struck
it over the
the bar from the sideline. The game ended in Kilteely/Dromkeen 1-14
Fedamore
0-9. It was an 18 man team performance, the lads must remember that
this is
only a first round and will have to focus on our next opponents Caherline
which
will be a tough obstacle to overcome, though if we play with heart
pride and
determination we will be there with an excellent chance with the aim
of
bringing back the U-21 hurling cup to Kilteely/Dromkeen. The team lines
out
as follows. N. O'Sullivan, R. English, F. Cagney, L. Smalle, K.Murphy,
J. Ryan, M. Smalle, P. Redfern, S. Keogh, D. O'Dea, J. English, P.
Ryan,
