Where's My Daddy?
One of the poems I wrote soon after getting married.
"Mommy, where's my daddy?"
The words are ones I've feared
Sitting down beside her,
I try to hide my tears.
"Your daddy died a hero,
unnoticed by the great.
Too soon to be forgotten,
his courage known too late."
" ' Don't be afraid,' I heard him say,
' I'm off to save the world today.' "
"He never made it home that night,
The TV flashed his name.
They said, ' His actions made it right.'
But he's gone just the same."
"Mommy, did he love me?"
Again I choke on tears.
"He loves you more than life itself."
I reach and pull her near.
"Oh how he loved to watch you play,
and hold you on his knee.
He said the greatest things in life
were angels: you and me"
"Mommy, will I see him again,
and sit upon his knee?
Is daddy now an angel,
like he called you and me?"
Wiping tears, I squeeze her tight.
"We'll be with him someday.
' I'll be with you forever,'
I often heard him say."
"Mommy, the kids at school,
they all make fun of me.
They say I'm bad, because my daddy
isn't hear with me."
"Just one more thing to tell tonight,
then off to bed with you.
Tell them he died to make this world
safe for all of you."
