An hour before the support band, Brisbane five piece Lavish were due to play, and the Metro was packed out - the ticket lines enormous. The colour of the night was definitely black, and pretension weighed heavily in the air. Luckily, the Cod was on the door list and walked straight through...
The first gig was sold out, and therefore Lavish had a huge audience to impress...Unfortunately, their best performance wasn't to be until the next night, which was nowhere near as full - but they still thrust out their unique mixture of electro-glam-pop with as much enthusiasm as ever.
The Cod didn't experience much of Placebo on
the Monday night...the lure of (free) alcohol and the comfy love seat in
the bar area was too potent; and there was spent the rest of the night
with the Lavish boys - stopping only to enjoy
my 'favourite' tunes - 'Nancy Boy' and 'Allergic' being the highlights.
"Good things things come to those who wait" - Brian Molko preached to the
crowd...I waited anticipated a rather less squishy Tuesday night...
Arriving considerably later, the Cod was pleased to discover that there
was no line , and much less pretention/posers. Lavish
were rad...seemingly much more comfortable and relaxed...Guitarist Gary
even sporting an excellent 'Kill the Cod' shirt in a lovely blue...no doubt
confusing many.
'If you've been to the movies recently you may have heard this song' - and with that Placebo launched into 'Every you Every me'...No one could claim that Placebo aren't a unique band - their songs include elements of sexual ambiguity, lust, pain, drugs, angst...All this mixed with the fascinating allure of the androgynous nature of Brian Molko to produce a most amazing stage presence...'My Sweet Prince' was absolutely breathtaking...I was, however, more than a little disappointed that they didn't play 'Slacker Bitch' - though it was requested more than once...it's definitely one of their best songs [well i think so].
Placebo have the ability to produce amazing music...as long as Molko's arrogance doesn't get in the way....br....
