| Oblivia It's Sally's weekend off, what better way to spend it than visit the loverly Hopetoun Hotel, attempting to play some pool, having a few drinks and watching a spot of Sydney band, Oblivia. I managed to pluck up enough courage to have a chat with Mr Josh Orange, singer of the group | ||||
| erm...i'm from Newcastle...just down for the weekend...you recently played in Newcastle yeah? J - We're gonna be playing Newcastle again I think next week...I think it's next week or the week after. I don't know the venue but I know we're playing Newcastle and Wollongong. You played SJ's didn't you? J - yeah we played SJ's What did you think about that? J - we played to like about 60 people That's good (if you have been to SJ's you'll know why) J - it was pretty good, got a good reaction. I think the Newcastle crowd will like our music. So who does the song-writing? J - Juke is the main songwriter and I think I'd be second in line. On the album we've just finished, he's written seven and I have done five, so it's pretty close. We all kind of write. Pete, the bass player and Johnny, the rhythm guitar player, so on the B-sides of the first two singles you'll see our names as well. It's a gradual thing...sometimes you get a good vibe while you're writing and sometimes you just write shit, you know? It's good when you've got someone else that can write as well. So you have got an album coming out? J - we have, and it's called "The Careless Ones"....cos we're a careless bunch of lads. We really don't care...yeah, it comes out the end of March, we've been told at the moment. The record company has it under wraps as usual. (long pause?thinking about questions and me complaining about one thing or another) J - we're in that movie about Newcastle Which one? J - the Bootmen movie Is that about Newcastle? J - yeah! I thought it was about tap dancing. J - yeah, but its based in Newcastle...have you seen it? No J - it's good...i really like it Have you ever stolen anything? (token silly question) J - I did...this is really stupid but when I was about 7, I remember stealing a packet of biscuits and felt really bad for days afterwards. So I went to confession, and I told the priest I stole a packet of biscuits. He told me to say 25 "our fathers" or something like that...25 "hail Marys' I think I got as far as like 10 and I didn?t feel so bad (I describe a certain naughty deed I did that day) J - now hang on a second, that's stealing isn't it? It is J - how do you feel now about it? I feel kinda bad J - I think you should go back there and make 25 chocolate milkshakes and 25 vanilla milkshakes for anyone just walking along, as your penance like. I should, I should, but...i'm evil J - I'm not, I'm a very holy person, all us Irish are Yeah, you are from Ireland, obviously from the accent and all J - yeah I'm from Dublin, but the band itself we're kind of like cold chisel actually. It's an Australian band...or even Crowded House...they're an Australian band.and it was formed when I came along and they were looking for a frontman and I auditioned for it, they were also looking for a song writer aswell, so it worked out pretty good. So it's a Sydney band with a Dublin frontman. As far as I know, Crowded House is a Melbourne band with a New Zealand frontman and Cold Chisel is...where are they from?...they have a Scottish frontman. So there you go. What's your favourite telly show ever? J - I like who wants to be a millionaire, I have to admit. I get very carried away, shouting at the TV "I know the answer to that!" Or when they answer the question and the guy is saying "are you sure, blah blah blah" and then he says "lets take a break" and you think, "what a wanker" J - I know, he's a bastard... shouldn't say that How do you Kill the Cod? J - I'd get a hook...would you have to catch itt? I dunno, you just have to kill it J - ok, I'd get a big blade and I'd slit its throat. Would that be a fair way of killing it? Yeah, I think that'd be pretty quick, actually I think I'd chop its whole head off. It'd be easier to get the hook out that way. |
