Interview with Travis Ryan of Cattle Decapitation Interviewed by Chad Fletcher

1. How and when did Cattle Decapitation begin?
In 96/97 by Gabe Serbian, Dave Astor and Scott Miller. I joined the band within a couple months of them starting up cause Scott bailed and they wanted to make it more death metal anyways and do away with the kind of stuff they were doing. I joined the band the week that the first 7" came out, or within a couple weeks at least. I remember they didn't even have the covers yet and I was already learning songs from it and writing new ones.

2. Were you in any bands before Cattle Decapitation? Any current side projects?
Josh was in 7000 Dying Rats and My Lai and Mike was in Creation is Crucifixion. Troy and I have been in dozens of lesser known bands. We've done some electronic stuff under the name Uum and 5/5/2000 in the past. Right now I have a couple things in the works, but nothing to talk about just yet.

3. Who are your biggest influences?
Right now all I listen to is Godspeed You Black Emporer and related projects. And Leviathan. So the new record may be even more bleaker than the last and so on.

4. How would you describe Cattle Decapitation's style?
Quirky grind influenced death metal?

5. Wht has been your most memorable moment since joining Cattle Decapitation?
Meeting Bjork and her boyfriend/genius Matthew Barney at one of our shows. Or watching Glen Benton show a group of us his cock piercing.

6. How would you describe a live Cattle Decapitation show?
Stand up comedy/gore massacre.

7. What are some of your favorite places to play?
Chain Reaction in Anaheim and San Antonio.

8. In your opinion, how does San Diego's metal scene compare to the rest of the U.S.?
Too stuck up and elitest yet trying to be friends with everyone at the same time. So alot of backstabbing goes on nd shit like that. Everywhere else seems to be a bit more chill.

9. What inspires you to write such morbid lyrics?
7 years of catholic school and stupid fucking people.

10. How would you say that "Humanure" compare to the previous album "To Serve Man?"
I think it's lot better. The production is better, certain instruments are played better this time, but it possibly lack the memorbility of song like on TSM. It's so much better though.

11. What can we expect from the upcoming album? Do you have a title for it yet?
I have a title, but I'm not going to go with it yet becaue I'm not 100% sure. It's going to be weird, weirder than the last one. The Caninus split is going to throw everyone for a loop, and the next stuff will probably do the same.

12. Besides music, what do you do for fun?
Drink and go to the bar. It' pretty depressing.

13. Where do you see Cattle Decpittion in 5 years?
I have no idea. Josh will probably be playing banjo in a bluegrass band, Mike will be trying to hotwire a donut with a piece of chalk and a toothpick, Troy will be in bed and I will be a Boyd Rice impersonator!

14. Thanks for the interview man. Any final comments?
Stay GORE!!!!!
