| CD REVIEWS 2009 |
| SAXON - "Into The Labyrinth" (SPV) It's rather fitting that British Metal 'legends' SAXON - kick off the year 2009 in immaculent style with their brand new studio album, Into The Labyrinth - to help celebrate their 30 year anniversary! Yes, it's 30 years since SAXON arrived with their self-titled debut back in 1979 when Biff and the boys were meer lads, cranking out those riffs and anthems. Over that time they've released some of the best British Metal ever recorded, easily rubbing shoulders with fellow countrymen and equally cherrished names like MOTORHEAD, JUDAS PRIEST, IRON MAIDEN, GIRLSCHOOL, DEF LEPPARD, WHITESNAKE to name a few. Today, the band is very much alive and with this new offering, the boys deliver another consistent release to add to their very large back catalouge! Opening proceedings we have the perfect SAXON opener, Battalions Of Steel all pomp and ceremony with an almost brazen attitude and rousing chorus, complete with a modern touch an absolute 'classic'! Next up is the first single/video, Live To Rock which is a chest beater of an anthem complete with that swagger that is typical of the lads, containing a similar groove to 'Solid Ball Of Rock' era in both execution and flavour a definite winner all the way! SAXON serve up a couple of power metal styled tunes via, Demon Sweeny Todd a menacing tune full of attack while, Valley Of The Kings has 'epic' written all over it, again stampeding away via a fast frantic riff topped off with a rousing half time chorus. The relentless grind of, Slow Lane Blues will surprise some with it's infectious groove that creeps up on you, making the song a winner from all points. The chunka riff will please many with it's unusual but captivating flavour. The down and dirty riffed beast titled, Crimes Of Passion has swagger, albeit with a modern mid paced groove but still retains that SAXON flavour with another very good song, another of the albums best. As expected, there's a ballad titled, Voice which has a good groove and is slightly different for SAXON and works well within the context of the song. Back to ass kicking hard rock via, Protect Yourselves containing plenty of meaty riffs crossed with an interesting melody making it a mean monster of a tune. Up tempo metal springs up through, Hellcats which steamrolls into power metal territory, blistering along featuring the band in full flight! Anyone who thinks the band are past it should THINK AGAIN! The rollocking, Come Rock Of Ages presents a 'classic' styled medium pace cruncher that has all the elements to satisfy a legiond of loyal long time fans, if it ain't broke .... Closing this CD is a new version of Coming Home (which orginally appeared on 'Killing Ground' 2001) here we get an acoustic version, complete with light percussion a nice touch. Maybe, there's an underlining message?! Unlike many of my long time friends who've deserted the band many years ago - I have always carried the flag for SAXON, maybe I'm a little biased but if the CD was crap, don't worry I'd say so! The fact is, SAXON's "Into The Labyrinth" is a great way to kick off 2009 - the veteran British Metal 'legends' deliver another, satisfying and consistent release - that's almost equal to their 2 previous studio outputs in both execution and substance. I personally think 'Inner Sanctum' was superior but the new CD does present an excellent legacy in the bands' 30th year! I'll say it's the: "British Rock Album of the Year"? You betta believe it! - 7/10 (BEST SONG: - Live To Rock.) |

| KREATOR Hordes Of Chaos (SPV)
Well, here's another classic 'old school' band releasing a new album to kick start the year 2009! Following the recent British metal 'legends' SAXON new opus, along comes the mighty German thrash metal 'legends', KREATOR unleashing an assault on your senses with their brand new CD, Hordes Of Chaos. Just as they did over 2 decades ago alongside names like, TESTAMENT, METALLICA, SLAYER etc. with their crushing, exhilarating and well executed product showing why this veteran act are still held in such high regard among 'old school' metal fans. Yes, they can still deliver with the best of them, as this new CD easily demonstrates. Similar to last year's awesome return by US thrashers, TESTAMENT the new album by KREATOR will definitely please many long-time fans of the band and hopefully introduce a legion of new generation fans to the delights of thrash metal. The last couple of years have seen the old thrash metal genre, slowly raising it's ravenous head again, so much so that UK thrash newcomers, EVILE created much interest around the world with their excellent debut platter. Now we come the 'Legends' basically doing what they've always done hard, fast, crushing thrash metal at it's best! Firstly, one of the major highlights for the new KREATOR album is, there's only 10 songs on offer! ATTENTION ALL BANDS! Just because you've written 14 or 15 new songs doesn't automatically make them ALL winners and in most cases, it actually detracts from what would have been a killer product. Nearly all the outstanding releases for 2008 suffered from this, there were of course a couple of exceptions. Just look back in history, nearly all the MEGA successful albums are of 10 maybe 11 tracks in duration. There are a few exceptions but .... The new KREATOR album delivers on so many fronts, killer songs, killer riffs, a killer sound topped off with a great production - that's more akin to a LIVE gig sound with thankfully, not to many overdubs to spoil the overall effect. It features some fearsome thrash metal, that reminds me of 'back in the day' ah my youth! The songs just kick so fucking hard, I almost get goosebumps that's what I'm talking about, plenty of thundering riffs, frantic solos, crushing drums with an almost near perfect product that definitely looses nothing in overall appeal. Best songs, well that's hard to define with every track a winner, yes you read right - possessing that certain charm that will envelope some listeners into a world of extreme pleasure. Well, I could waffle on all day about how good this album is, suffice to say I can't go past such gems as, Destroy What Destroys You, To The Afterburn, Hordes Of Chaos, Demon Prince and Warcurse all delivering rousing thrash metal of the highest order. Other notable standouts are definitely, Escalation containing an absolute killer riff and groove that steamrolls all before it. The frantic charge of, Amok Run shows style and substance not forgetting the blistering, Radical Resistance - or the incredible grind of, Absolute Misanthropy all are truly awesome thrash metal tunes. The only track here that breaks the mold is, Corpse Of Liberty a very tasteful instrumental proving it's not all out attack and a touch of class! KREATOR's Hordes Of Chaos is an absolute killer release, showcasing one of the best 'old school' thrash metal bands in the world today. Some are leaders, some are followers German masters KREATOR - are definitely a leader of the pack! - 9/10 (BEST SONG: - Escalation. |

| NICKLEBACK Dark Horse (Roadrunner)
To state the bleeding obvious - Canadian hard rockers NICKLEBACK are a major success story! While never being a big fan, I know of them and quite like their music - which reminds me of a 21st century version of superstar 70's acts like Slade, T.Rex, Gary Glitter, etc. and maybe even a hint of Def Leppard?! That quality - made the above acts 'house-hold' names around the world in their day, through good radio friendly - melodic hard rock and that's exactly what NICKLEBAK do in their very own way! Their success speaks for itself, both NICKLEBACK and CREED were the only decent rock acts to emerge through the mid to late nineties that played rock music, FACT! That alone is a BIG plus for both acts and due to their success, both acts probably saved rock music from being completely obliterated musically speaking by the world during those very lean times! Virtually everybody else, was hung up on cashing in on the Alternative/Grunge/Nu-Metal popularity of the 90's, it's no wonder both acts hit pay dirt, no one else besides a handful of 'die-hard' metal acts released any decent hard rock for years! Being an 'old school' metal head, I remember quite well which metal acts strayed to the, Dark Side (Nu-Metal) during those times?! Your secrets safe with me - as long as you keep those payments up!! For those of you - who have written off NICKLEBACK because they release lots of love songs as singles well that's called success and like CREED these boys can rock hard, with the best of them! NICKLEBACK's brand new album, Dark Horse is produced by none other than former AC/DC, Def Leppard, and Shania Twain producer Mutt Lange. Lange's success speaks for itself with production credits on some of the biggest selling albums in rock of all time! As to be expected, the album is of impeccable quality sound-wise throughout - with a crisp, yet full fat sound that sounds awesome when you crank the volume! In a perfect world - every band would have production - this dam good! Musically speaking, NICKLEBACK have their own groove and it's demonstrated to it's full potential here throughout this thoroughly satisfying and enjoyable product that I imagine will sell by the truckloads, if it hasn't already?! There's a few ballads, we'll get to them later but what really makes this band and why so many people like 'em - is when NICKLEBACK lock horns, well talk about kicking serious hard rock ass! Their rock songs really do showcase how talented these guys are. Kicking off is opener, the rollicking stampede of, Something In Your Mouth which should have your foot tapping instantaneously, with a very infectious tune to annoy your neighbours! The almost STATUS QUO groove of, Burn It To The Ground is absolutely brilliant, rousing, almost crushing anthem of the highest order that is definitely the album's best song, both musically and lyrically a fuckin' 'classic'! The chorus sounds reminiscent of Slade/Def Leppard etc. and will have you singing hey! - in no time. The stomp of, Next Go Around should have you jumping out of your seat, with another anthem rocker destined to become a firm favorite live! The light 'n shade approach of, Just To Get High will surprise some with plenty of passion and an absolutely, crushing anthem chorus - stomping all the way home. The sleaze of, Shakin' Hands is very tasty with a mountain of groove, a clever and quite impressive tune. The canter of, S.E.X. - is both captivating and rocks hard with a very infectious flavour. There are 4 ballads here including the current video/single, Gotta Be Somebody being the perfect tune, possessing all the qualities that guarantee a 'Hit' single while, I'd Come For You again is the perfect radio friendly, single/video material. The pull at the heart string ballad, Never Gonna Be Alone succeeds while, If Today Was Your Last Day rounds out the quartet of radio friendly tunes contained herein. Finishing off in fine style is, This Afternoon which has, as most of the songs herein - contain excellent lyrical content and this one is a very amusing song, with a definite tongue planted firmly in cheek groove. The fact that a successful band like NICKLEBACK has teamed up with a semi-retired Mutt Lange, only highlights how damn good this band really is. Their latest album, Dark Horse is of excellent quality, by a quality band with a quality producer at the helm, the results basically, speak for themselves! To many it will be their, "Album Of The Year" personally, 2 less ballads and it would of received full marks! - 8/10 (BEST SONG: - Burn It To The Ground.) |

| YNGWIE MALMSTEEN Perpetual Flame (Riot)
There's no denying the talents of Yngwie Malmsteen - legions of loyal followers LOVE the man and every thing he's recorded. I believe he's still one of the all-time, best selling artists in Japan and millions of guitarists around the world admire his playing. Over the years I've heard numerous albums released by Yngwie and while I'm not a guitarist - I can however tell a great guitar player when I hear one. In his early years Yngwie, was often accused of ripping off veteran ex-Deep Purple/Rainbow 'legend' - Ritchie Blackmore but Malmsteen has more than proved himself for all the world to hear. While Malmsteen has soloed with the best of them but like other guitar greats, Satriani and Vai - Malmsteen also hasn't written too many memorable tunes like Mr. Blackmore has! Over the course of 18 album releases, Yngwie has employed 5 vocalists, my personal favorite being 1988's album, "Odyssey" which featured Joe Lynn Turner (Rainbow). My other favorite vocalist's have been, Doogie White (Rainbow) Jeff Scott Soto (Journey) and now the latest album features, Tim 'Ripper' Owens. The new CD, "Perpetual Flame" is basically the same as countless previous Yngwie excursions before it with the guitarist showcasing his amazing ability with plenty of shredding for his fans. Musically, it's pretty much the norm but unfortunately the heavy handed production courtesy of Yngwie is diabolical. If this product was by an unsigned act, then maybe it could be forgiven but what Yngwie has done is virtually murder what could of been an absolutely brilliant release! Vocalist Tim 'Ripper' Owens (Beyond Fear/ex-Iced Earth/ex-Judas Priest) is one of the world's best heavy metal vocalist on the planet and though his performance is faultless throughout, it's the combination of terrible production and over indulgent wank and meandering solos that really let's this album down. In some places Owens vocals are too low in the mix, the overall effect sounds very amature indeed. Most of the songs come across as fairly bland and after couple of minutes of guitar heroics, I started to yawn while reaching for the latest copy of National Geographic to ease the on set of bordem! Yngwie Malmsteen's "Perpetual Flame" - is a pedestrian affair, that wastes the wonderous talents of Owens in a rather lack lustre product. While there's no denying the talent of those concerned, it's handled so appaulingly it comes across half assed. The best thing about this album is the photo shopped cover of Yngwie. Now, where did I put my RAINBOW CD's! - 5/10 (BEST SONG: - Four Horseman) |

| JOHNNY CRASH Unfinished Business (Sun City Import)
Talk about a long time coming ... US late 80's dirty rock 'n' roll band JOHNNY CRASH - have their 2nd album release, Unfinished Business - has finally seen the light of day, albeit - some 17 years later! A few tracks have been available via the net for a while and now that it's finally been given an 'offical' release, let's get down to it. The reason for this very long delay is bullshit and politics, what else! The album was originally recorded two years after the bands' brilliant debut platter, Neighbourhood Threat (1990) and the rumour is that it was held up because of an supposed injunction filled by GNR vocalist, Axl Rose because 2 members were involved with the recording? Of course the swing in mainstream music in 1992 away from metal to grunge after Nirvana hit PAY DIRT - didn't help countless metal acts who were dumped by their labels and Johnny Crash didn't escape that fate either! Both GNR members, drummer Matt Sorum and guitarist, Dizzy Reed are in the credits on the CD! I think most of you would agree that after hearing the recent absymal 'Chinese Democracy' no wonder Axl didn't want this album released, it shits all over his recent release! Anyway, JOHNNY CRASH's 2nd album, "Unifinished Business" is a good follow up to their impressive debut plater with the same sleazy, dirt under the fingernails, ass kickin' hard rock, blues groove that worked so well the first time around and again works to it's full potential throughout. Vocalist Vicki James Wright has a voice that is definitely unique and distinct, compared to countless similar singers within the same genre. He's up there with names like: Bon Scott, George Dolivo, Tom Keifer, Angry Anderson you getting my drift?! Like those mentioned, Wright too has a great timber and style in his voice that's instantly as identifiable as say Ozzy! The band sound as tight as a velvet glove but with the kick of about half a dozen mules, this is really good, dirty hard rock. Two other original members, guitarist Christopher Stewart and bassist Andy Rogers are also on board. Songwise proceedings kick off with a stomper, Damantion Alley a four on the floor, up tempo beast with that grab your beer anthem chorus absolute 'classic'! We pull up and ease back the throttle to the slow grind of, Monkey See Monkey Do with sleaze being the definite groove here. The galloping drive returns via, Mama Don't Care again we get 'classic' Johnny Crash with an infectious little tune full of cracking bravado excellent! One of the album's highlights is up next, a cruising power ballad, Renegade an absolute 'classic' tune that pulls out all the stops. Long time fans will remember the same style of tune on their debut, a song called, Thrill Of The Kill well, that's what's here and it's equal in every way! In The Groove lives up to it's name sake with a cheeky swagger that's instantly infectious, a very clever and good track. The straight drive of, Rock 'n' Roll Suicide ambles along in medium pace territory while semi acoustic intro of, Summer Daze is a good light 'n' shade tune that's quite strong and could be a 'hit' if the bozos who control 'mainstream' radio backed it. It's certainly equal to many semi- ballads songs, that I've ever heard! Crunching rock with montains of grind is exemplified in typical JC fashion with, Ditch The Bitch defintely, another one of the album's highpoints that just stampedes it's way to climax - an excellent JC tune! The tender ballad, When It Gets Hard despite the obvious sexual title, the song actually sounds more akin to crossover, country rock, even featuring female backing vocals, a nice touch. Another US act, JUNKYARD had a similar groove to some of their music. The slow grind of boogie sounds cool on, Livin' Above The Law sounding almost like a Rose Tattoo outake, a swaggering medium pacer that's up to the challenge and should please fans no end. In places, if of you close your eyes you'll hear Wright almost morph into Angry it's that close! Speaking of the Tatts, the slide blues of, No Payrole features some wicked slide playing and it's great way to finish up a fairly satisfying album. Overall, while being consistent enough, it does however suffer a little due to the lack of not enough killer tunes with only maybe 3 or 4 tracks herein, really reaching those heights. There's not enough songs here as dynamic as tunes like, Hey Kid, Axe To The Wax, Halfway To Heaven, etc. JOHNNY CRASH's 2nd album release, "Unfinished Business" - almost equals the quality of their impressive debut platter, with plenty of the same style of good, dirty hard rock that should satisfy most whole like the band. While It's not quite the killer some had hoped for, it certainly is good enough to satisfy most lovers of dirty rock 'n' roll! - 7/10 (BEST SONG: Ditch The Bitch) |

| TESLA Forever More (Frontiers)
Now that the US has finally caught up with the rest of the world - as far as realizing that hard rock music is on the rise, yet again with countless re-formations of 'old school' metal acts, highly underrated US melodic hard rockers, TESLA make a triumphant return with an absolute killer return. Just like last years' excellent return by US 70's 'super-group' JOURNEY now along comes TESLA's Forver More - an album that has 'first class' stamped, all over it! If you're a lover of melodic acts with substance like, GOTTHARD, STARBREAKER, JADED HEART, HOUSE OF LORDS etc. - then this is the band for you, with the same excellent execution and sheer taste, musically speaking. With the exception of the US, where TESLA had major success over a number of releases during the late 80's, most of the world regard TESLA as a 'cult' band! Like many great acts, the mainstream music world overlooks acts of this caliber, in most cases, bland formula acts hit pay-dirt while acts like TESLA and their ilk, never achieve that mass acceptance?! Regardless, real music lovers like you and me - listen, admire and love metal bands that deliver good, great and at times brilliant recordings. Already this year we've had a number of top notch releases, well you can definitely add TESLA's new CD to your list. We launch into the title track, Forever More a stirring, infectious medium paced rocker with an almost anthem groove, while the upbeat drive of, I Wanna Live - is 'sheer class' in every department with a cracker riff, killer chorus and the groove herein is spectacular a definite winner! Next we slide into, One Day At A Time a storming rocker with an up tempo blast, again another cracker of a song! Pulling back the reins just a little, we enter medium pace territory with, So What possessing a commerical flavour, complete with a fab four (BEATLE's) groove nice! Slow brooding rock is up next via, Just In Case having a country crossover feel, that works exceedingly well. The power ballad, Fallin' Apart is absolutely perfect radio fodder, which has 'hit' written all over it. The majestic sounding, Breakin' Free has nice use of light 'n shade combined with a killer riff and chorus to match, a solid tough rock song. The mid tempo grind is well represented on, All Of Me a tenacious rocker with an up tempo chorus that gallops along like a wild stallion excellent stuff! A couple of radio friendly power ballads, The First Time and the strangely titled, PVT Ledbetter serves up the right stuff while the epic sounding, In A Hola Again has a light 'n' shade groove combined with a strong riffed chorus, another killer cut. Wrapping up this very satisfying album is, The Game a swaggering beast that grabs you by the throat with it's tenacity and drive, showcasing another brilliant hard rock tune. The bonus track, My Way should be on the album proper as this tune iis a relentless riffed monster that is hard as nails rocker, adding that cherry to the mix. TESLA's Forver More is a bona fide 'classic' hard rock release, that's definitely a contender with a very, very satisfying CD that should please many fans no end. Welcome back boys ... definitely, worth your hard earned money! - 9/10 (BEST SONG: I Wanna Live) |

| CROOKED X (EMI)
This young US act from Oaklahoma, with an average age 14 years old (anyone remember SILVERCHAIR?!) yes, you read correctly, CROOKED X - are possibly the hottest rising US hard rock act at the moment! Considering, the metal heavy weights - that are involved behind the scenes here, firstly MEGA manager Doug McGhee (who has helped the careers of acts like, Bon Jovi, Skid Row, Motley Crue, Kiss) not to mention 2 famous producers, Spencer Proffer (WASP, Quiet Riot) and Michael Wagner (Skid Row, Warrant, Accept, Malice) are involved in this debut platter pretty much tells you, that this band means business! Production, as you expect is excellent, with a quality that most bands can only dream of, giving this CD a good overall sound. Musically speaking, we find a reasonable good debut platter, CROOKED X - that has a commercial, melodic hard rock feel - packed with just about all the right stuff to make these young guns, 'superstars' if only the world catches on?! Opening proceedings is the sombre, Gone a swaggering slow paced rocker that's reminiscent in places of modern metal acts such as, UNION or SIXX AM - an interesting choice for album opener?! Next up is, Adrenaline which again possesses a slow chugga-chugga groove, combined with an up tempo chorus making it a good solid tune. Another slow grinder called, Time Is Now (ala ALICE IN CHAINS) crunches along with plenty of balls complemented with some nice licks, a quite tasty tune. The up tempo drive of, Rock & Roll Dream - is a relief after 3 slow songs in a row and this song really does stand out with a zest and a familiar groove that will impress. We again enter new metal tinged territory via, Fade which definitely has that ALICE IN CHAINS flavour, so much so that many will not know the difference unless told, with a good tough moody piece that works very well. It's back to up tempo rock through, You Gotta Bleed stomping it's way into your heart with the perfect hard rock styled tune that should win many fans. The cheeky swagger of, Nail In The Coffin has a good groove, great riff and is definitely one of the album's high points with a mountain of bravado. Sounding like an outtake from HARDCORE SUPERSTAR along comes, Nightmare which has a wicked riff mixed with some nice light 'n' shade, the album's most interesting track. The slow melodramatic, Death Of Me takes us into throw away territory with a fairly bland offering while the album's closing tune, Loss Of Control again saunters around before ripping into a up tempo chorus. The Oaklahoma quartet, Forrest French - vocals, guitar; Jesse Cooper - lead guitar, vocals; Josh McDowell bass and Boomer Simpson drums are a class outfit that will only improve with age. As a debut CD goes, it's definitely has the right amount of crunch, groove and above all else - some good consistent tunes that should find many metalheads jumping on board. Lovers of acts like: Alice In Chains, Union, Sixx Am, Brides Of Destruction, Roadkill, Black Stone Cherry, Dokken, etc. should love this album?! Overall, CROOKED X is a good debut platter that showcases a decent hard rock act that delivers, a good product that should please fans of competent melodic hard rock acts. A good consistent release. - 7/10 (BEST SONG: Rock & Roll Dream) |

| PRIMAL FEAR 16.6/Before The Devil Knows You're Dead (Frontiers)
Regular KILLAWATT.NET readers know our love for German metal merchants, PRIMAL FEAR - both their 2005 and 2007 album releases, "Seven Seals" and "New Religion" - were both given the coverted - 'Album Of The Year' when released! Well, is it a case of 3rd time lucky?! Unfortunately not, while our favorite German power metal merchants, PRIMAL FEAR do serve up another fairly consistent release, it's not quite up to the standards of their last, New Religion (2007) or their 'peak' release, Seven Seals(2005)! The new PRIMAL FEAR CD, 16.6 Before The Devil Knows You're Dead is however, a tough sounding beast that definitely has the right stuff, in the majority of places with a number of cracker riffs, some good tunes but I personally think it's a couple of songs too long?! Why bands persist in delivering more than 10 tunes nearly every MAJOR successful album ever released has 10 tracks, they're are of course a few exceptions. If you can't win your fans with 10 tunes - then you're doing something wrong. More songs means in most cases, throwaways and I'm afraid there's a few on board here. Compared to previous efforts the new CD has at least 3 songs that should/could of been omitted. Firstly, No Smoke Without Fire reeks of 'try-hard' while, 5.0/Torn seems a tad over indulgent in places. The ballad, Hands Of Time is bland compared to previous excellent tunes like, In Memory (off 'Seven Seals') for instance. The meandering, Black Rain is OK, ambling along with a nice groove and is almost saved by a power metal groove towards the end. Luckily, it's not all bad news as the rest of the CD definitely delivers what most of us want. The majestic sounding, Riding The Eagle has it all, a monster of a metal tune with power, riffs, power metal groove a 'classic' song! The sheer grunt of the title track, 16.6 is also pure magic with another killer song that has a fabulous melody that will, stick in your head! Don't be fooled by the rather melodramatic intro to, Under The Radar as it is a fast and furious power metal tune that rocks hard all the way home. We now come to the album's most interesting tune, Soar a relentless riffed beast, complete with power cord chorus that oozes 'class' topped off with an interesting groove mid song, almost KORN like, but it works! We get a medium paced stomping rocker via, Killbound as well as more metal crunch courtesy of, Night After Night which features more power metal, another cracker tune with an almost, Iron Maiden/Helloween feel. The chugga riff of, Smith & Wesson hammers the point home well while the album's high point is definitely, The Exorcist an absolute killer song possibly one of the bands' finest moments, that has 'epic' stamped all over it with a frantic frecious riff backed up by a power packed anthem of almost biblical scale absolutely excellent! PRIMAL FEAR's new album, 16.6 Before The Devil Knows You're Dead is a good release, it's solid and sounds great with the production similar to their last but personally, I think it's too long and with the above mentioned mediocre tunes omitted - would of scored FULL MARKS! - 8/10 (BEST SONG: The Exorcist) |
| QUEENSRYCHE American Soldier (Rhino)
The new QUEENSRYCHE album, American Soldier - will either be hailed as a 'classic' by some while others, will simply dismiss the album and the band altogether?! To most 'long-time' fans like myself - the bands' best moments are arguably their debut EP, Queen Of The Reicht (1983) - along with their 1988 concept album, Operation Mindcrime and 1990's commercial breakthrough, Empire! While the band regained a little respect and credibility recently through their Operation Mindcrime II album, it was to be perfectly honest far below the standards set by the above mentioned superior releases! I'm sure the new CD, American Soldier - will receive mixed reviews due to it's fairly mundane groove throughout but it is worth considering the 'concept' herein is a rather touchy subject nowadays. Personally, I think if the music had a far tougher approach sound wise - then there would be far more intrest in this CD. For 'true' fans of the band who have hung in there, through QUEENSRYCHE's high and low points in their career, growing with the band and happy with their more middle of the road sound - well you'll probably like what they hear?! Sounding more like the bands' past efforts of the last decade plus, that's exactly the feel/groove that's on display here musically speaking. Melodramatic, melodic, thought provoking progressive rock that's it in a nut shell! Opener, Slither is a rousing chorus rocker with the usual medium paced groove which kicks proceedings off in fine style. We quickly lose pace with, Unafraid which possesses a rollicking riff but not much else. Next we have, Hundred Mile Stare which has a good melodic groove and is easy on the ears. The mellow, 30,000 feet limps it's way through the background while, A Dead Man's Words as you expect is a sombre sounding tune, that actually doesn't sound too bad. One of the best songs here is, The Killer an up tempo, melodic rocker which has a nice crunch, good melody and is by far one of the superior tunes herein. Another track that is amongst the better offerings herin is, Middle Of Hell which has a good feel and is typical of the band when they set their minds to it. The almost meandering, If I Were King is quite pleasant with it's light 'n 'shade groove, while the robust riffed, Man Down is another 'high point' with the most menacing riff on display here, with a crunchy, infectious QUEENSRYCHE tune most of us will appreciate. The mindless wandering of, Remember Me comes and goes without much interest, while the ballad groove of, Home Again is well bland! The melodramatic pomp of, The Voice might appease some but left me feeling rather cold and honestly, pissed off that I forked out my cash for this rather poor excuse for an album. Look, I have liked the band since 1983 and unlike countless friends who have deserted QUEENSRYCHE like lemmings since 1990's "Empire" - I'm afraid that their new CD, "American Soldier" is a very, disappointing release on so many levels. This album needed to be a 'killer' to reinstate the band as a serious contender again! Unfortunately, after weeks of repeated listenings it's obvious to me that without ex-guitarist, Chris DeGarmo onboard, QUEENSRYCHE just don't seem to be able to write good, meaty metal tunes any more! So very, very sad! - 6/10 (BEST SONG: The Killer) |

| HEAVEN & HELL The Devil You Know (Roadrunner)
The anticipation for this release is very high indeed. HEAVEN & HELL better known to you and me as the MK III version of BLACK SABBATH has been a long time coming for many fans of this veteran, heavy metal act. To this day, there are many fans who are divided regarding the Black Sabbath name so the fact that the highly loved Mk III line up of: Dio-Iommi-Butler-Appice, renamed themselves HEAVEN & HELL - is a very clever move. Over the last couple of years the band have toured the world on the back of an excellent live CD that reignited the interest in the MK III line up. Let's face it, while many love the Ozzy incarnation I like a whole generation, grew up with the DIO era of Sabbath and to me their 1980 debut platter, "Heaven & Hell" is still their finest hour. Their follow up released in 1981, "The Mob Rules" - was another killer opus that was almost as good as it's predaccessor giving us great, consistent heavy metal of the highest order. Now we come to this highly antisipated new CD, "The Devil You Know" which to be perfectly honest, is an almost a carbon copy of the bands' last studio recording in 1992, "Dehumanizer" - released under the Black Sabbath name. Overall, the new CD contains numerous slow and medium paced tunes with plenty of doom, gloom and down right heavy riffs as to be expected from the 'master' of metal riffs Tony Iommi, delivering his usual wonderous audio assault. Ronnie is in fine voice, with Geezer and Vinny cementing everything in place with a wicked rhythm section. Musically, there will be some who will regard this new CD as a rather bland product, as there are only 2 songs that have an up tempo groove, while the other 8 songs are slow and in some cases rather labourious and boring. If you're expecting an album to rival their 80's releases then, you're going to be extremely disappointed! Opener, Atom And Evil announces the arrival via a slow brooding tune that honestly doesn't really inspire with a rather limp melody. Riff wise it's tough but not much else. Another slow plodder follows, Fear which is about as menacing as a Adam Sandler film. Next up is the first single, Bible Black which is far superior to the above tunes, in every way with a nice intro which kicks into a medium paced song that reeks of 'classic' and is one of the album's high points. While it's good, it doesn't match anything from their 80's peak! Bassist Geezer get's to kick off the next tune, Double The Pain a medium pacer with a cracker of a relentless riff, complete with an infectious and memorable melody again definitely another 'high point' herein. The slow ponderous, Rock & Roll Angel is 'vintage' Sabbath containing a down 'n' dirty riff, but unfortunately it's let down in the melody department. But wait there's more, The Turn Of The Screw again has a great riff but Dio's melodies seem just a little tired and jaded compared to his better days?! Seven songs in and we now finally get an up-tempo tune, Eating The Cannibals which coasts along at a good speed with fast and furious riffage, a decent melody topped off with some killer licks by Iommi definitely one of the best herein. While never reaching the heights of killer tunes like, Neon Knights or Turn Up The Night (for example) it does funnily enough have a similar groove that is not disimilar to TV Crimes off 'Dehumanizer'! It's back to dinosaur metal with an 'epic' feel with, Follow The Tears plodding along with another devilish riff that should please many who like their riffs mean and nasty. Lookout, here comes up tempo tune number two, Neverwhere which steamrolls along but ultimately really goes nowhere. Wrapping up this 10 track odessy is, Breaking Into Heaven yes, you guessed it another slow doom styled tune that rambles on for about 7 minutes. Some will love it, some won't?! I imagine the British press, will hail this album as a 'masterpiece' THINK AGAIN! Unlike numerous 'old school' metal acts who have definitely, delivered some excellent return platters in the last couple of years - I'm afraid HEAVEN & HELL's new CD, "The Devil You Know" just doesn't live up to the standards many of us were expecting with a product that's far below, the high standards set by the band with their masterpieces, "Heaven & Hell" and "The Mob Rules"! One of the main factors for the rather ordinary review is that Ronnie's melody lines - in most cases, that's what pulling the songs down! Hey, I love the guy's voice but it sounds very bland and un-inspiring compared to his previous works! Talk about going through the motions - it's a very safe release. If this is the best product that the mighty - HEAVEN & HELL can produce after 17 years, then it seems like it's a very, very long road to Heaven & Hell indeed! - 6/10 (BEST SONG: Eating The Cannibals) |

| UFO The Visitor (SPV)
British veteran hard rock institution, UFO return with their new album, The Visitor serving up another very satisfying release, that easily sits amongst some of the bands' finest moments. Similar in both style and groove, to their recent studio albums - The Monkey Puzzle and You Are Here - UFO dish up another good release - full to the brim with excellent songs, great melodies and a band that sounds as smooth - as a rolls royce. As to be expected, this album oozes pure class, from start to finish helped along by featuring one of Britain's finest, ever hard rock vocalists - Phil Mogg, who along with Paul Rodgers (Bad Company) and a few others - are 2 of the best ever, from the UK. Musically, the band delivers the usual crunching hard rock tunes, plus the powerful melodic songs with those infectious melodies, topped off with some outstanding licks and solos courtesy of US guitarist, Vinnie Moore. This is his 3rd studio outing as guitarist with UFO and he now seems to be more than comfortable in the role, sounding like he's very much at home. Original bassist, Pete Way is absent from the recording due to ill health but fear not his other old school partners, guitarist/keyboardist Paul Raymond and drummer, Andy Parker complete the lineup. The groove herein is excellent, this is great melodic hard rock performed by one of the masters of the genre, with UFO definitely delivering a bona fide 'classic' release. Kicking off with, Saving Me complete with slide guitar intro, giving it a blues tinged feel that builds into a stomping hard rock tune. The mid paced romp of, On The Waterfront almost has a 'New Orleans' type groove, with an impressive use of light 'n shade, brilliant. Next we have the heaviest tune on offer, Hell Driver crunching along via a cracking relentless riff, topped with a strong power chord chorus giving us vintage UFO as well as a personal favorite! We slip back a gear for, Stop Breaking Down a mid paced melodic pull at the heart strings tune, that works very well. It's back to blues tinged hard rock via, Rock Steady a stomping cruiser that does what you expect with a great groove, some nice licks and a catchy sing-a-long chorus excellent! Talk about groove, we slip into overdrive via a tune titled, Living Proof which is a mid paced song with a ton of feel, lots of licks courtesy of Moore with an almost RATT groove, sounding not disimilar to Way Cool Jnr by the US rodents a very cool song! Mid paced rock appears with, Can't Buy A Friend a cruising tune that teases and tantalizes the listener showcasing sheer class all the way, an impressive slice of tasteful music. The almost country rock sound of, Forsaken will win hearts with it's ballad like approach and I imagine many will like what they hear. Pulsating rock rears it's head via, Villians & Theives a bar room boogie of the highest order that's 'classic' UFO all the way, with a cracking riff, layered keyboards and licks a plenty. Closing this little opus is, Stranger In Town showcasing a crunching mid pacer that easily stamps it's authority over a very satisfying collection of songs by this veteran British hard rock band. UFO's "The Visitor" is a very strong output - that should be considered a 'classic' album by many who adore this band. It easily equals their recent past efforts and can sit up amongst some of the bands' finest moments - in their long history of album releases. A definite contender ... 9/10 (BEST SONG: Hell Driver) |
| TIM RIPPER OWENS Play My Game (SPV)
Tim Ripper Owens the name alone is now synonymous with heavy metal fans the world over as Owens, is arguably one of the best metal vocalist today. His work is there for all the world to hear and boy what a resume he has! His similar story, was ironically immortalized in the 2000 film ROCK STAR (originally titled, 'Metal God' - until Mr Halford's solicitors stepped in) tells the story of a young man being plucked from a cover band from virtually obscurity, to front one of the world's premier metal acts?! Be it fact or fiction, Owens similar rise to front UK 'legends' - JUDAS PRIEST is now part of history. Personally, his recordings with the above UK legends were very good. his performance flawless. The albums themselves, were a little laboured in parts no fault of Owens as he was basically a hired hand. His voice, easily rubbed shoulders with his predaccessor, delivering some truly awesome vocal performances as displayed on both Jugulator (1995) still Judas Priest's heaviest ever release and Demolition (2001) - both being reasonable good albums. His LIVE recordings with the boys from Birmingham, "Live In London" (2002) and "98 Live Meltdown" both proved without a shadow of a doubt that Owens was the real deal! Upon being dumped by Judas Priest after the 'Demoltion' world tour, OWENS next musical venture was veteran US metal merchants, ICED EARTH where Owens contributed vocals for both, "The Glorious Burden" (2005) and "Framing Armageddon" (2007) before again - being given the boot, to again be replaced by the original singer! Despite the above, OWENS released a self titled album, "Beyond Fear" (2006) a very powerful and at times - brutal metal flavoured release that easily competes with his previous material with both above 'legend' acts. Owens also contributed vocals for the recent album by guitar whiz - Yngwie Malsteen "Perpetual Flame" (2008). Now we come to TIM RIPPER OWENS first solo recording titled, "Play My Game" which features an 'all-star' lineup including numerous metal musicans: Bob Kulick, Simon Wright, Rudy Sarzo, Carlos Cavazo, Billy Sheehan, Steve Stevens, Michael Winton, Doug Aldrich, Tony Franklin, John Comprix among others. Musically, the CD kicks off with the melodramatic, Starting Over featuring a glorious vocal line, a powerful groove and a nice light 'n shade feel all topped off with Owens showcasing that voice that is truly unbelievable. The downright heavy, Believe is a mid paced monster crushing all before it. The bullet train speed of, The Cover Up possess power metal of the highest calibre, with an awesome chorus. Next we have the grind of, Pick Yourself Up a definite heavy tune with an almost prog rock groove showing class, style and one of the CD's high lights. The relentless riffed, It Is Me stampedes it's way around your living room like a pack of wolverines a tasty song indeed! Speaking of No Good Goodbyes has an almost Alice In Chains feel crossed with Ripper doing his thing, a very strong song easily being one of the CD best tracks. The longest song on offer here is, The World Is Blind which to be honest, just ambles along and is probably the weakiest tune herein, too long, too boring. The semi ballad groove of to, To Live Again has nice light' n' shade and shows another side to Owens vocal delivery. The alternative metal feel of, The Light will impress some having a totally abstract metal groove. We get strong traditional metal via the excellent title track, Play My Game a rousing, rollicking metal tune, that annilelates every thing in it's path, crushing one minute, galloping the next a cracker of a tune, another high point. The frantic, Death Race has a relentles riiff catapulting it along with a power chord chorus that's strong and very 'old school' metal in flavour. Closing this album is the slow, melodramatic, The Shadows Are Alive having an almost Black Sabbath groove, that's sounds very good, far outweighing the recent Heaven & Hell debacable in every way! Tim Ripper Owens delivers - as only he can, with an outstanding vocal display throughout this multi musical metal - flavoured project that will surprise many. "Play My Game" is a very satisfying release, if - you're open minded about your metal music. In some ways it's has a similar overall feel to Sebastain Bach's recent solo album. If you're expecting Judas Priest meets Iced Earth then you'll be a little let down as TIM RIPPER OWENS is much more than a hired hand nowadays as this album clearly demonstrates. While it's no bona-fide killer, it's definitely a very solid release. - 8/10 (BEST SONG: Play My Game) |

| CHICKENFOOT (Sony)
The expectations for this CD are very high indeed, unlike the recent lukewarm Heaven & Hell album - thankfully, that's not the case here with the self titled debut by, CHICKENFOOT being the exact opposite, with a very good and satisfying release! While it's not the killer, as some would have you believe it's definitely a winner on many levels! With a line up boasting ex-Van Halen (Van Hagar) members - vocalist Sammy Hagar and bassist Michael Anthony - as well as Red Hot Chilli Peppers drummer, Chad Smith not to mention, guitar whiz - Joe Satriani being on board, you just know this product is gonna sound good?! Production is crisp, yet not overproduced and is handled with taste by veteran producer, Andy Johns who's previous credits include, LA Guns, Cinderella and Led Zeppelin among others. Soundwise, it has a very similar groove to the VAN HAGAR style - which is to be expected and it's actually great to hear some cracker tunes by this power packed outfit. In a nutshell, this is first class melodic, radio friendly hard rock that will appeal - to the masses. The band, well they're as smooth as silk you can hear the years of expirence in every song, with Hagar's voice being as good as ever and he gives it his all, throughout. Naturally, there are some amazing backing vocal harmonies present, something Michael Anthony has always excelled at - not to mention, nice solid bass playing. Add Chilli peppers skinsman, Chad Smith completes an excellent rhythm section and of course, we hear some beautiful licks a plenty and at time some fercious guitar heroics by Satrinai giving this album a very nice touch indeed! Opening tune, Avendia Revolution pounds out of the speakers and we are away with a stomping mid pacer that sounds more akin to Velvet Revolver, with a fairly bland melody line that just doesn't quite make it! Not all is lost as things definitely pick up with, Soap On A Rope a sleazy, cheeky almost VH type song with class, style and some great band interplay, topped with some cool lyrics and talk about groove it has it, great stuff! The commerical sounding pop of, Sexy Little Thing again has instant groove and is what most will expect from this outfit showcasing good, catchy melodic hard rock of the highest calibre which has HIT written, all over it! If this song doesn't having you singing/humming along with the chorus then you're probably dead! Next we have the swagger of, Oh Yeah again another brillant rock song that has all the right stuff to light up a stadium, this track has it all, great chorus, cool licks, a great bridge section mid song topped off with a rollicking riff and groove brilliant! Mid paced VH style returns via, Runnin' Out a sing-a-long song with a shitload of groove and some nice licks and an all round winner. The up tempo samba beat of, Get It Up again strolls through Velvet Revolver territory and is a very infectious little number, complete with a nice use of light 'n shade another highlight. The coolest song on offer, Down The Drain has a slow blues feel that sneeks up on you, with a short yet subtle chorus, sounding like a very late night jam, another winner. Next up is, My Kinda Girl which sounds so much like Euro melodic rockers, Gotthard I had to look twice but it is CHICKENFOOT delivering a smooth, sassy sounding mid paced melodic rock tune that is of excellent quality. Thankfully, the band hasn't dumped too many ballads herein with only, Learning To Fall being the only one present with that Major sounding power ballad, the outcome being fairly predictable. Back to swaggering VH style rock, Turnin' Left has all the lumps and bumps to make it a favorite with many, possessing a great groove as well as some tasteful playing, need I say it - another highlight. Rounding out this CD is the longest tune, Future In The Past having a semi acoustic intro which jumps into a choppy, almost funk rhythm, complete with piano with the boys sounding like, they're having fun which translates perfectly! CHICKENFOOT's "self titled " debut - is a very classy and fairly satisfying product that will win heaps of Hagar era Van Halen fans if it hasn't already, with an CD that is almost perfect for lovers of his former band. It's good, it sounds good and is only marred by a couple of ordinary tunes but the rest definitely, makes up for the overall product. A pretty good debut platter! - 7/10 (BEST SONG: Sexy Little Thing) |

| LYNCH MOB Smoke & Mirrors (Frontiers)
With countless 'old school' bands re-activatiing over the last several years, it was just a matter of time before the mighty - LYNCH MOB returned?! Firstly, band leader ex-Dokken guitarist, George Lynch - has reinstated his original singer, Oni Logan who sang on the bands' debut platter, "Wicked Sensation" (1989). That album still to this day, is an excellent release only slightly eclipsing the bands' second self titled (1992) album that featured, Robert Mason - currently fronting Big Cock. Personally speaking - both singers are excellent, with a warm timber to their voices and it's great to hear Oni Logan again, leading LYNCH MOB through the new album, "Smoke & Mirrors" definitely, being a great way to return. All the hall marks that made LYNCH MOB popular in the late 80's are herein, with good songs featuring excellent vocals, great riffs, tight rhythms, catchy melodies and of course some nice licks and tasteful solos courtesy of Mr Lynch. Production is crisp, yet not over produced - giving the band a warm and crunchy sound, that's instantly appealing to many who adore this band. As soon as you press play - along comes album opener, 21st Century Man instantly the groove is established with a typical LYNCH MOB tune reeking of class, melody, cracker riff and awesome vocals, all backed with a band as tight as ... absolute classic! If you're a long time fan and this tune hasn't won you, well ... . you need viagra! The light 'n shade of, Smokes & Mirrors is a strong flavoured tune that highlights the bands' interplay, which is excellent featuring nice licks, capped off with a crunching chorus absolutely magic. Next we have, Lucky Man again displaying a typical mid paced tune with that certain class we all love, again it's another winner here folks! The robust riffed, Time Keepers sees a cascading riff and melody combine, that works well showcasing another standout, that gives space for Lynch to really stretch his fingers. Swaggering rock via, Revolution Heroes stamps it's authority, delivering a tune that reels you in with a hook that could land Moby Dick a timeless piece of 'classic' rock! Just when you thought it couldn't get any tougher and you'de be wrong as, Let The Music Be Your Master contains a relentless riff that captivates the listener, all topped off with classy melodies, a great groove and is the CD's nastiest sounding song, oh yeah! The up tempo pop flavour of, The Phacist zips along at a canter while the mid paced mellow groove of, Where Do You Sleep At Night is cool and has a great feel. The swagger of, Madly Backwards is impressive, not to mention the hard hitting, We Will Remain galloping into the distance, showing the boys having fun. The slow cruise of, Before I Close My Eyes is probably the closet song herein that has a ballad feel while album closer, Mansions In The Sky (bonus track) is the weakiest tune on offer. My only beef - I reckon it's maybe a couple of songs too long but some, will love that fact! LYNCH MOB's "Smokes & Mirrors" is a welcome return that almost equals the bands' excellent first 2 releases and far out shines those forgettable mid to late 90's releases. LYNCH MOB are back with a reasonable effort that should please many long time fans. - 8/10 (BEST SONG: 21st Century Man) |

| STRYPER Murder By Pride (Frontiers)
80's US Christian hard rockers STRYPER come storming back after 4 years, with another well rounded product that should please - all who follow the band with their tasteful new CD, Murder By Pride. Basically, picking up where their excellent 'return' CD, Reborn (2005) - left off, the men who used to wear yellow and black - have returned with another fairly, satisfying product that should have the bands' loyal following - praising the lord, it's that good?! While it might not reach the heights of say, To Hell With The Devil (1986) or arguably their best ever release, Against The Law (1990) - two of the bands' finest ever albums, the new CD is however, a very tasty treat indeed. Michael Sweet's voice is still as impressive as ever, the band are as always - solid as a rock with the songs herein being, the usual mix of tough melodic hard rock, a couple of pop flavoured tunes and of course there's a couple of ballads to keep everyone happy. Opening proceedings we have, Eclipse Of The Sun galloping along at a decent rate with soaring vocals, a tight rhythm that announces the bands' arrival. We lift a couple of notches for the next tune, Four Leaf Clover a definite highlight, which is 'classic' STRYPER all the way containing a cracking riff, an infectious song that has great groove, a hooky chorus as well as that magic voice commanding attention, all together a very solid song excellent. The cover of fellow US 70's rockers, BOSTON tune, Peace Of Mind is given the STRYPER treatment and boy does it sound great, offering just the right amount of variation from the original - with the song still reaching those glorious heights. A possible single/video in the future?! STRYPER have always penned good, pull at the heart felt ballads and Alive displays a perfect stirring ballad that reaches for the heavens with it's light 'n shade attack. The almost pop flavoured, The Plan rollicks away with gutso, a great hook and melody that is very commerical sounding and absolutely infectious in appeal. The title track, Murder By Pride is a tough sounding rocker that again features the trade mark STRYPER sound, big riff, big vocals and rousing anthem groove, and is definitely another winner here. Crunching out next is, Mercy Over Blame a mid paced rocker featuring Sweet's voice climbing, weaving it's way into your world via some great melody, all cememted in place by a wall of harmony vocals, great execution showing pure class, a very strong song. We next enter the world of, I Believe a strong sing-a-long tune, that has 'airplay' wriiten all over it with that special something that will appease - all who worship this band, serving up another infectious melody that will have many singing in harmony. The mid paced pop flavour of, Run In You is quaint, while mesmerising in feel - with an easy to remember melody that reeks of happiness with an almost country rock flavour. Another hit, if given airplay. We saunter into middle of the road territory via, Love Is Why having a good melody with a song that will please many, without setting the world on fire. Luckily, the stomp of Everything is far superior in every way with soaring vocals, crunching riff, good melody and a strong overall feel topped with some excellent band interplay, complete with twin guitar solos a jewel in the crown. The menace of, My Love I'll Always Show is again 'classic' STRYPER that has that special groove, great vocals and very strong melody all coming together to create a solid song of very high standards. Closing proceedings we have, My Love My Life My Flame another heartfelt ballad that won't leave a dry eye in the house, as singer Michael Sweet pours out all his emotions. Considering his recent loss the song will hit many and is a fitting way to finish an album. I must admit, that I'm surprised the band haven't released an album titled, 'Holy Smoke' maybe it's just my sense of humour?! STRYPER'S Murder By Pride - is a good, satisfying release that definitely has all the elements that made the band popular in their 80's hey days. While not being an absolute killer - it's never the less, an album that should please many longtime fans no end. For newcomers, this is a helluva place to start! - 8/10 (BEST SONG: Four Leaf Clover) |

| RHINO BUCKET The Hardest Town (Acetate)
US hard rockers, RHINO BUCKET are an acquired taste - that's for certain. Often branded as rip-offs and ridiculed by many, simply because of their blues based rock that has similar feel to numerous bands - including comparisons to AC/DC! I can think of over a dozen bands, so I suspect there's more to the story and while I admit - there are some similarities, RHINO BUCKET definitely have their own style and sound, which has never strayed from their 1990 self titled debut platter. In all seriousness, RHINO BUCKET sound nothing like Acca Dacca of today, if anything they're reminiscent of the Australian rockers early years and my friends that is their appeal to many, including myself. I persoanlly find it highly amusing that the recent AC/DC release, 'Black Ice' was produced by former RHINO BUCKET engineer, Brendan O'Brien considering the contemp the seedies supposedly have for the RHINO BUCKET?! Regardless, RHINO BUCKET's new CD, The Hardest Town - is exactly what most devoted fans will love with a rather satisfying release, full of great groove and atmosphere. While it never achieves the heights or toughness of their excellent debut platter, it does however deliver an album full of late night, barroom boogie tunes that will appeal to many. Production is very basic in sound, having space and is almost good quality 'Demo' in flavour. While some may protest, the fact is - it sounds good and suits the band as always. After all the mighty AC/DC have now followed - their example! We open with the title track, The Hardest Town which is a straight driving rocker with a catchy chorus, while the slow grind of Justified has swing, style and hooky chorus. Next up is the bristling up tempo rocker, Know My Name stomping away along the highway, classic! A change of tempo via, Dog Don't Bite a sensitive light 'n shade rocker, which has an almost Soul Stripper groove, crossed with a classic anthem chorus. The almost pop intro to, No One Here throws you until later, a classy tune with a climbing melody and is one of the highlights here, a great little rock 'n roll song champion! Up tempo time returns with a stomper, Street To Street which gallops away in 'classic' fashion, cracker riff, great groove and a great melody, all rolled into one showing the boys doing their thing! Slow brooding blues, sleazes it's way through, Take Me Down complete with a quirky rhythm and power chord chorus, all working to create a cool appealing little tune. Mid paced bravado arrives with, She's With Me a 12 bar boogie to stomp away the brain cells. The pop flavoured swagger which is almost Cheap Trick in feel - works to a treat here on, You're Gone - a tight, terrific tune that races away like a gazelle, that's very catchy before a half time change that simply fades away. The stripper blues courtesy of, To Be Mine will be loved by many, sounding very similar in feel to Ride On by the seedies! I'm sure that'll ruffle - a few more feathers in the acca camp. Well, the song works a treat and to be honest, who gives a flying fornication if it sounds like whoever, sounds similar ever heard of homage?! As long as it ROCKS! Closing this opus is the appropiate tune called, Slip Away and that's exactly what this song does, slowly sauntering with groove that you'd expect at the end of a late night. You can almost smell the cigarette smoke and taste the stale beer. RHINO BUCKET's The Hardest Town - is a good release, that easily delivers what most fans desire. The interplay between members, especially the guitars is excellent, with the addition of gang vocals - also adding to the band. While it's no killer, it is an enjoyable release, although I find it - a little light in the crunch factor! - 7/10 (BEST SONG: Know My Name) |

| HOUSE OF LORDS Cartesian Dreams (Frontiers)
Last years HOUSE OF LORDS release, Come To My Kingdom was - lets face it, a fairly pedestrain affair compared to their excellent 2005 release, World Upside Down - which was far superior in every way, especially in the crunch department! Well it seems that after luke warm reviews, HOUSE OF LORDS listened to critics and have returned with quite possibly - their finest hour ever! Yes folks - the new CD, Cartesian Dreams - is quite literally, music to the ears - compared to last year's insipid release with a new album full of crunching, high quality melodic hard rock of the highest calibre. Sounding crisp, refreshing and down right tough in execution this is what the band should be delivering a quality product with all the right ingriedents to satisfy the listener. Lovers of melodic rock flavoured hard rock acts like: Cheap Trick, Gotthard, Bon Jovi, Shakra, White Lion, Cinderella, among others - are all experts in their craft, just as HOUSE OF LORDS are on this new CD. The band as usual, deliver a near faultless performance with the precission of a Swiss watch. This time around - we have far stronger songs on offer, with most making the grade. The return of a tougher guitar sound, combined with better song writing has definitely given the band a far more consistent product. The opening song and title track, Cartesian Dreams has a wicked 'old school' riff with an almost Dio era Sabbath groove, topped of with a strong melodic chorus. The strong melodramatic, Born To Be My Baby has it all, great use of light 'n shade combined with strong pre-chorus bursting into a sing-a-long chorus - perfect. This is formular hard rock by the numbers but it works! Up next is, Desert Rain which is a good, solid song that's a definite high point, having awesome melody and enough crunch to satisfy most who love this style. Mid paced rock surfaces on, Bangin' a pedestrian formular rocker, while slow anthem rock is presented via, Never Look Back. The canter of, The Bigger They Come comes and goes without too much fanfare, while we raise the bar for, Repo Man definitely another standout with crunch, melody and a good hooky chorus complete with female backing vocal, a nice touch. It's back to anthem rock with, Saved By Rock another strong tune with plenty of bite and class. The rollicking AC/DC groove of, Joanna is impressive, with another trumph card here with all the tricks in the trade thrown into this song, a future video/single anyone?! There are thankfully, only 2 ballads on display - Sweet September and The Train, both do their job in the usual manner and will appeal to ballad lovers. HOUSE OF LORD's "Cartesian Dreams" is a far more consistent, tougher sounding and thoroughly more satisfying release than their, 'Come To My Kingdom' stinker which really let the band down. Luckily, HOUSE OF LORDS have redeemed themselves with this very good new release. - 8/10 (BEST SONG: Repo Man) |

| GOTTHARD Need To Believe (Nuclear Blast)
Switzerland's melodic rock masters, GOTTHARD return with their latest CD entitled, Need To Believe - to satisfy the hungry cravings of their ravenous fans. Following up the bands' 2 previous studio releases, Domino Effect (2007) and Lipservice (2005) in absolutely fine style, the new CD is not disimilar to the latter in overal feel and execution. It's jam packed with many mouth watering tunes that GOTTHARD are experts at and I'm sure it's gonna appease their very loyal followers. After the many years doing their thing, GOTTHARD are simply stating a fact and while I reckon, Need To Believe - is an excellent album, I personally prefer the tougher sound employed on their last release, Domino Effect - which had the commerical groove but added a little more crunch. The new CD is similar in feel to GOTTHARD's 'break-through' release, Lipservice - with a far more melodic and polished, user friendly sound. Don't despair as it's not all bad news as there are a few songs that definitely, pack a wallop soundwise including one of the CD's 'high-points, I Don't Mind which unfortunately steals SAXON's 'Wheels Of Steel' riff and creates a rousing, pumping anthem of their own that kicks all the way! The solid crunch of, Unspoken Words is instantly appealing with a cracker riff, great groove and that magic over-the-top chorus a killer song, 'classic'! The charge of, Right From Wrong is pure magic, with plenty of crunch teamed up with great licks, killer groove and strong, tough chorus another highlight here! The cranking drive of, Rebel Soul stampedes into the world via cool riffage, again great groove all topped with those awesome vocals and melodies creating, a first class song by a first class rock act. The title track, Need To Believe contains the light 'n shade approach with dynamic power cord chorus and as always, it works a treat, a definite diamond here. We now move into sing-along song territory via tunes like, Break Away and Unconditional Faith both containing mainstream melodies that stick in your head. The slow heavy groove of, I Know You Know is a definite trump card herein, rousing, appealing with a cracker anthem chorus! There's a couple of radio friendly ballad type tunes, Don't Let Me Down and Tears To Cry which are cool, if that's your thing both providing what's to be expected. One song that is interesting is opening tune, Shangri-la which has an almost African intro, that builds into a medium paced rocker, complete with those infectious, melodic vocal lines commanding your attention. GOTTHARD's Need To Believe is a very good product, that will be devoured by fans no end with a very, satisfying release that has all the right stuff to please. As usual, the CD is pure class - all the way and I'm still wondering why GOTTHARD haven't become MASSIVE in the US?! GOTTHARD again, delivers an album that rivals anything BON JOVI has released, especially recently it's a strange world indeed!! - 9/10 (BEST SONG: I Don't Mind) |

The medium paced crunch of, Let Me Lie My Life To You is a cracker, a definite high light with an awesome groove and melody that is very appealing. I've always been a sucker for a good riff and boy do SHAKRA crank out some mothers! The rollicking relentless riff of, The Illusion Of Reality is an absolute killer, combined with expert use of the light 'n shade approach that works exceedingly well herein, with a very infectious song a trumph card?! Well, that's what I thought until, The Journey kicked in with it's crushing heavy riff which is reminiscent of fellow Euro rockers, POISON BLACK or SENTENCED demolishing all before it. The tune has an 'epic' feel and a number of contagious grooves that should please many, with it's bravado and class all rolled into one, a definite highlight. The commerical sound of, Regressive Evolution is instantly appealing with a charging anthem that inserts itself into your head, while talking about tasty tunes, you can't go past the almost pop flavoured, Anybody Out There which has appeal and 'chart hit' written all over it, a possible video/single anybody? Back to relentless riffage courtesy of, Right Between The Eyes which has it all, killer riff, hooky melody, excellent execution and a solid song that is excellent hard rock. Next up is a swaggering sleazy rocker, Dirty Money possessing another good feel while the subtle intro to, Insanity suddenly steamrolls into a tough groove complete with catchy chorus, again showcasing another standout here. Such was the success of the last two releases, 2005's Self Titled and 2007's Dreamin' In A Casket by European hard rockers, HARDCORE SUPERSTAR - that winning formula is now ever present as dispalyed on the brand new album, Beg For It! All the elements that have made the band popular are here in abundance, If you loved the above - then the new CD is definitely going to please you no end. It delivers a fistful of catchy, crunchy hard rock songs - that the band now seem to pen in their sleep, full of infectious melodies, meaty riffs, great playing yes, it's all here! The title track, Beg For It - is a rambancious rousing anthem which is typical HS, full of stomp while the stampede crunch of, Into Debauchery is instantly appealing with a good melody and substance. Straight driving rock surfaces via, Shades Of Grey complete with the usual tasty arrangements again delivering another top notch tune. Another stomping rocker, Nervous Breakdown cranks hard, topped off with a strong sing-a-long chorus. Next up we return to the band's debut sound wise - courtesy of light weight pop on, Hope For A Normal Life - a pleasant wander down the middle of the road, with a groove that will be loved by many, a future single/video me thinks?! We return to swaggering rock, Don't Care About Your Bad Behaviour having bite, a great groove and a good sounding song that delivers on all fronts. Sleazy does it as, Remove My Brain explodes with gutso and a wicked riff all wrapped into great, catchy tune. There's no let up as we steamroll into, Illegal Fun a bristling anthem of high quality and crunch that leads into another swaggering rocker, Take 'Em All Out containing cool riffage and melody. Closing up proceedings is the almost dislexic sounding, Innocent Boy stomping it's way to the finish line. As always the band shines from start to finish, with a product that delivers exactly what their fans want and showcases another of Europe's excellent hard rock acts. HARDCORE SUPERSTAR's "Beg For It" delivers another thoroughly satisfying release that has all the right boxes ticked and easily equals their 2 previous brilliant albums. | STEEL PANTHER Feel The Steel (Indy)
Hailing from sunny California, where else - STEEL PANTHER (formerly known as Metal Skool) release their debut CD, Feel The Steel. After years of playing covers around LA, the band have finally got around to releasing an original product with plenty to wet the appetite of hungry 'cock-rock' fans the world over. Believe it or not, they actually out cock recent rising act, BIG COCK! Depending on your taste and point of view STEEL PANTHER are either a band you'll love or hate it's that simple. I can imagine there will be plenty of music scribes who will enjoy ripping this band to shreds. Being an 'old school' fan I love what the band does, musically there's plenty of influeneces or homages to numerous hard rock legends, with riffs and ideas you've all heard before and STEEL PANTHER have the knack of making it sound fresh and above all else - fun. What seperates them from other 'cock-rock' acts is their lyrics, which go for throat on many tunes herein. I imagine close minded, polictical correctness nerds and some women - will probably find it offencesive but I couldn't stop laughing at some of yhe phrases and lyrics. Well, the band has the look, sleazy style 'cock-rock' music and a definite sense of humor all in all making it a great entertainment! Kicking off we have, Death To All But Metal (I couldn't agree more) with a rousing anthem that will see plenty of head banging, a great opening tune. Next we have the funniest song on offer, Asian Hooker a tough medium paced rocker with absolutely hilarious lyrics, that'll have you pissing yourself with laughter a fuckin' classic! The semi ballad, Community Property works well with a good song, again topped off with humours lyrics and is almost has a radio friendly groove but I'd imagine not too many songs herein will fit radio station playlists. Charging rock via, Eyes Of The Panther delivers a tough great groove with a contempory sound. One of the trump cards here is the WHITESNAKE feel of 'Is This Love' with, Fat Girl (Thar She Blows) an absolutely cracker of a song with those humerous lyrics again topping off a great semi ballad tune that will impress many. The lines about, "buying a million happy meals" or "sink my sausage into your double chin" or "where does your neck begin" had me rolling around the floor with laughter brilliant! Next is the VAN HALEN sound similar to 'Unchained' with another tantalizing tune about sex titled, Eatin' Ain't Cheatin' a personal favorite, this swaggering song is an absolute 'classic' in every sense of the word a standout that believe me sticks in your head! Well, the BON JOVI inspired, Party All Day has it's tongue firmly planted in it's cheek with a sing-a-long chorus, complete with voice box guitar and key change to finish on a high note. The light 'n shade of, Turn Out The Lights is another example of high energy rock that showcases an almost DOKKEN sounding tune that delivers a good hard rock song. Another ballad, Stripper Girl almost sounds like a POISON outake while the mid paced feel of, Shocker builds and builds into a good pedestrain rocker. The quaint ballad taste of, Girl From Oklahoma is fun while the CD's closing tune, Hell's On Fire has an ACCEPT type riff and is a good anthem with a rousing chorus, that's equal to many bands within the metal world. While some may dismisss the band because of their flamboyant style, obnoxious attitude and down right offensive lyrics (to some), it's obvious that they are accomplished players and it sounds as tight as a .... Comparisons to Spinal Tap and a plethora of others - will be made by many 'so-called' music jornos but both you and I know - that they are either failed musos or don't have any talent to be a musician - hence why they bag so many decent bands. STEEL PANTHER's "Feel The Steel" is a good romp through the hard rock metal world, with plenty of tasty songs to appease most who love the melodic, 'cock-rock' style. While there's nothing ground breaking here, from a listening point of view - it's thoroughly entertaining and it ceratinly helps if you have a sense of humour?! - 7/10 (BEST SONG: Asian Hooker) |

| MEGADETH Endgame (Roadrunner)
The expectations are high for this release and I can honestly state here and now - that US 'legend' metal act, MEGADETH - deliver one of the years' best and strongest releases with their new CD, Endgame! While we could waste time debating who's the better band, MEGADETH or METALLICA the bottom line is, Dave Mustaine has definitely thrown down the gaunlet here, with his new CD - easily eclipsing his old bands' recent return platter. The difference is that MEGADETH's new CD is packed full to the rafters - with killer riffs, great grooves, good songs none of which are too long and there's some damn fine heavy metal here all of the highest calibre, showcasing a dam fine metal release! The production is crisp, tight and most definitely HEAVY in sound with not one song herein being mediorce or throwaway by any means. Andy Sneap along with Mustaine have produced a great sounding product, that delivers in every department. Opening proceedings is the instrumental, Dialectic Chaos a free flowing, rousing opening, heralding the return of one of the best with class and style with some very tasteful guitar licks. The nuclear assault of, This Day We Fight virtually crushes everything in it's path, with a song of monsterous scale, showcasing an extremely killer cut excellent! The hypmotising groove of, 44 minutes is typical MEGADETH possessing a great groove, killer riffs, catchy melody with a hint of familararity that warms the heart, while the galloping tempo via, 1,320 stampedes and blisters along with a nasty riff complete with half time licks making another outstanding song that's also very cool. The steamroller riffed, Bite The Hand has it all, killer riff, hooky melody, twin guitar solos, great groove, all in all - another killer cut! The medium paced marauder named, Bodies has a riff to die for, with plenty to like, including another great melody and feel presnting another winner. The dynamics of the title track, Endgame is a typical drive through MEGADETH territory with all the right ingriedents thrown into the mix giving the listener, exactly what they'd expect and it doesn't disappoint - on any level. Next we come to the CD's most interesting and musically different tune herein, some may call it a ballad I on the other hand, would suggest it's a down style tune to give the listener a break from the constant audio assault on your ears, it almost works for me? The crushing of your senses is instantly apparent on, Head Crusher which definitely lives up to it's name sake, with a bruising tune that will entice plenty of head banging I'm sure! Another cracking tune, How The Story Ends demonstrates how good MEGADETH really are with excellent use of light 'n shade, incorporated into another brilliant metal song, that kicks like a mule all the way home. Finishing off in style comes, The Right To Go Insane a relentless riffed beastie with a great melody, great execution and again another killer song to satisfy most REAL metalheads with MEGADETH showing many within the genre how it is done?! Favorites, well, I can't pick one because I love it all! MEGADETH's Endgame - is a thorougly satisfying metal release, that should be loved by many metal fans the world over. Whether you're an 'Old School' metalhead or new to the metal genre this will be many people's choice for - 'Album Of The Year' and I'm afraid I'd have to agree that's it's a very, very serious contender that's for sure! - 9/10 (BEST SONG: This Day We Fight) |
