SEBASTAIN BACH - Angel Down (indy)

Most of us know how good a singer/frontman Sebastain Bach is right? I still remember back in 1993 when - Skid Row opened
up for GNR on their Australian 'Use Your Illusion Tour' - the band cooked and Seb sang his balls off an absolute killer
performance that as far as I was concerned they blew the headliners off the stage!!

The ex-SKID ROW frontman has had a varied career, since his 'hey days' with his former band. When fronting Skid Row
Sebastain was one of the coolest frontman in metal in his day and the band were almost unstoppable with both their
self titled debut -
and the excellent follow up,
'Slave To The Grind' - being two of metal's best album releases in their time! Both easily sailed past the
million units sold in the US with healthy sales all around the world, with world domination seemingly - only an album away!

Well, we all know what happened don't we? Skid Row's next and third release,
'Subhuman Race' virtually destroyed the band with a shift in musical direction from a blistering hard rock/metal act to a poor man's Pantera imitation which just didn't wash or work! The band spiralled away to obscurity until early this century when Skid Row returned, albeit minus Sebastain.

Mr. Bach meanwhile, has performed on Broadway and has released a number of solo products over the years and recently he has been playing shows all around the world, promoting his new solo album,
Angel Down - his first solo album since 1999.

Angel Down - is now almost 12 months late, originally being slated for release in October 2006 and if you were expecting, "Slave To The Grind Part 2 - then I'm sorry to say but you're going to be disappointed. What we get is an album of numreous, different styles within the hard rock metal genre, at times making for an interesting listening.

Seb's voice is excellent throughout the man is a metal 'legend' and has nothing to prove with his high notes and screams, all up in the stratosphere while he can croon and deliver a dirty vocal whenever required. The band well, awesome players is an under statement and this band does sound shit hot! Production is good, I must say I expected something a little different a more 'classic' sound but it's a fairly modern approach soundwise.

The songs themselves are open to your taste in music, some will like what they hear - some won't, it's that simple. A number of songs feature an almost nu-metal groove, Negative Light is almost Halford like in style while, Stuck Inside (featuring Axl Rose on guest vox) is light 'n shade coupled with a nasty steamroller riff that works exceedingly well. The bravado of, American Metalhead having a 'traditional' metal flavour with an almost Megadeth groove. Let's not forget the Iron Maiden type gallop of, You Don't Understand.

The sombre down tuned title track - sounds tough, menacing with Bach and band annoucing their arrival with a solid opening nu-metal inspired track. Axl also lends vocals on a cover of the Aerosmith's, Back In The Saddle a 'classic' song which sounds pretty good hear, almost reaching the heights of the original. Axl's cool but Tyler is way cooler!

A couple of tunes hear, Our Love Is A Lie and Love Is A Bitch Slap both have infectious hooks not to mention another guest vocal from Axl Rose (on Bitch slap) so nice to hear Axl sing on something new! Both songs sound more akin to Seb's former band's latest product with their alternative rock sound.

Seb bites back with more metal via, Take You Down With Me, Stabbin' Daggers and You Bring Me Down all possessing nasty riffed songs that should, please most fans?

Look, I think,
Angel Down by Sebastain Bach is a good enough product - that will appeal to many, it's by no means a killer output but is a decent enough effort. If you're expecting Seb to be screeching over killer vintage Skid Row type tunes well they're not here. If you're open minded about Seb and what he does fine, then you'll love his new album.

There will be some people however, who upon hearing this album will say that both Sebastain Bach and Skid Row need each other to ever, achieve major success again?
Well they may be right?! -
7/10   (BEST SONG: - American Metalhead)

HARDCORE SUPERSTAR Dreamin In A Casket (Gain Import)

Picking up where their excellent fourth, self titled (2005) album left off - the new HARDCORE SUPERSTAR album, Dreamin' In A Casket
is again another excellent release packed full of infectious, good time hard rock -  that should keep their fans happy.

The production is crisp, tough and warm complementing the numerous songs that have that quality we've all come to appeciate.
For those who've never heard of them, imagine the angst of early Motley Crue/Guns & Roses/Beautiful Creatures  - combined with hints
of dirty punk,  inspired hard rock that's the best way to describe Hardcore Superstar?!

Opening up proceeding is, Need No Company a cranking rocker steamrolling out of the speakers before slaming into, Medicate Me
complete with a sleazy relentless riff and chanting chorus. The stomping title track is up next, containing a very GNR riff topped off with an
excellent sing-a-long chorus magic!

Silence Of the Peacefully is a light 'n shade affair that romps along nicely while the hot 'n heavy grind of, Sophisticated Ladies which is one of the albums' highlights with an absolute killer riff, licks and commerical chorus a winner! Next up is another standout, Wake Up Dead In A Garbagecan
(awesome title?) which is an absolute stomper, kicking ass all the way - excellent!

The hard edged riffage of, Speading The News thumps along with a cracker of a riff while the intense, This Is For The Mentally Damaged - boots you up the ass with another stomping hard rock song!   The suave cruise of, Sensitive To The Light is almost hypnotic with a pop groove, in contrast the attack of, Lesson In Violence showcasing an excellent band that can take all comers in the genre, another great slice of rock.

The no nonsense, Sorry For The Shape I'm In belts you around the head with another killer riff then has you entwined in a catchy chorus brilliant! Rounding out this very satisfing platter is, No Resistance a dirty ass kickin' hard rocker with more attitude that Lemmy on a bad day a serious ass kicker!

If like me you thought the bands' last effort was their best well this new album is on par with a  just as consistent product with Hardcore Superstar's fifth album,

Dreamin' In A Casket
- being an absolute cracker of a record containing numerous, catchy, infectious, ass kickin' hard rock songs that should please any who love this genre. A great rock 'n' roll release!   - 9/10   (BEST SONG: - Dreamin' In A Casket)
JADED HEART Sinister Mind (Frontiers)

German melodic rockers JADED HEART recently went through the dreaded 'line-up' change, with 2 original members leaving
the band. Regardless, the band have continued and have come storming back with a very slick, tough sounding melodic rock album,

"Sinister Mind".

Having been around for this side of 2 decades these boys know who to write, infectious, catchy, commerical hard rock with just enough
bite to entice listeners like myself,  who normally would dismiss the band.

Production is first rate, as to be expected with a major company behind them and the song writing is of impeccable quality with
JADED HEART easily rubbing shoulders with some of the elite in the melodic rock genre. Names like, House Of Lords, Gotthard,
Queensryche, Bon Jovi compared to the New Jersey boys' recent country flavoured output - JADED HEART's new CD simply - eats it alive!

With 12 songs on offer, most are either mid paced or up tempo slices of rock all containing glorious riffola and some breath taking melodies that simply top off some very good songs. Up tempo rockers are well represented by, Hero, Justice Is Deserved, See The Light, Heavenly Devotation and the magnificent, Hellucinate being a personal favorite. All possess killer riffs and catchy choruses, topped off with a wall of sound backing vocals.

The mid pace tunes, Sinister Mind, Going Under, Open Your Eyes,  To Please And Give In and Always On My Mind all having that certain something that should impress
the listener with some, first class melodic - hard rock.

A couple of songs, Crush The Fear and My Eager's Red offer off beat and half time grooves, which work exceedingly well with both songs having an awesome feel, albeit capped off with excellent melody lines making both these songs very notworthy.

What seperates JADED HEART from countless other melodic rock that are rather wimpy, acts like Journey, Toto etc. is that they possess some crunching riffs that make the songs so much more enjoyable, with the degree of light 'n shade offered in their music within. The crunch of the guitars is very satisfying and really does help the overall feel of many of the songs here.

The quality of musicianship, song writing and production herein makes JADED HEART's new album,
"Sinister Mind" one of this year's serious
contenders for an 'Album Of The Year' nomination -
(yes, it's that good!) with a product that is very, very good indeed.

Take a listen and hear a blistering example of how good melodic rock, can be in the right hands. A very satisfying album for fans of the genre and lovers of
House Of Lords, Gotthard, etc. should absolutely LOVE this record. Simply wonderful!   -

ROADKILL - God Bless America  (Independent)

From the opening chainsaw riff to the screaming finale 12 songs later, Australian hard rockers, ROADKILL dish up a smorgasborg of
metal tinged tunes to tantalize a whole generation on their debut CD,
"God Bless America"!

Soundwise ROADKILL has many elements of hard rock within it's veins, most notably an almost traditional value combined with a little
modern day heroics. The formular works well, with a wide and varied range of influences ranging from AC/DC, Metallica, Guns & Roses
meets Dokken, Ratt, Van Halen etc.

The band is a four piece outfit, based in Tasmania - featuring vocalist, Neil Steel
(singer for veteran Tasmanian metallers, TYRANT)
his brother Zig on guitars, Craig 'Sheppo' Sheperd on bass guitars and Keef Kenny - filling the drum stool.

Musically, ROADKILL differs from Steel's old band (TYRANT) in style, direction and execution with a freshness and a modern, sounding approach. The various musical directions on the songs within, show a diverse, varied and often interesting selection within the metal genre.

Balls to the wall rock is well represented by album opener, Get Outta My Way  - a crackerjack riffed rocker that just steamrolls from start to finish! The 'classic' metal anthem, Day After Day possesses a menacing 'old school' sounding riff similar to 80's US metal merchants, Warrior, Malice, etc. featuring a sing-a-long anthem chorus complete with death defying solo!

The anti war statement of the title track, God Bless America will definitely ruffle some feathers with it's pull no punches lyrics about young men dying in war. Opinions will be varied, regardless - the song itself reaches glorious heights and is one of the highlight's herein.

A number of songs have a commerical groove, without selling out which could beneifit the band, with pop rocker, Hollywood whipping away into a canter before reeling you in via an infectious radio friendly chorus. The industrial feel of Lazy is quite hypnotic, with a relentless riff, riffing off into infinity when BAM out of nowhere comes a straight rock chorus that gets your attention!

The class of songs raises to another level during both, Last Man Standing a tale of a western hitmen with homages to Serenity and Deadwood and the very infectious, Living In Hell - a song that has a hint of AC/DC in the chorus.. Both songs have strong, melodic choruses, excellent riffage, tough arrangements and a great groove and
both are highlights here.

The thrash metal assault on, King Hit is 'old school' ala Metallica/Anthrax with a frenzied chant during the chorus, packing a wallop while, Sex Machine is a cock rock ditty ala Cinderella when along comes, Locomotive barking back to 80's vintage style ala  Motorhead.

The album's closing tune, Don't Fuck With Me musically speaking is Extreme meets Rose Tattoo with a rawkess chorus that will be popular LIVE favorite!

The execution of the players is OK, I dislike the guitar tone which has a 90's transistor radio quality (ala Pantera) which sounds very dated. Give me a stack of JCM valve Marshalls anyday! I also hate how the vocals sound - Steel is a good singer but in places herein, he's been crucified with bad mixing which doesn't help the overall quality. It's obvious in some songs he's screaming his heart out but the mix is just so bad. Maybe, it's just me? Look, the bottom line is it definitely rocks and is enjoyable so if you're not a muso hung up on production it's worth a listen.

ROADKILL's
"God Bless America" - is an OK debut platter, it's raw, it's rocks but the demo like production lets the album down somewhat and some will no doubt hate
that fact.  Good, but with better production this could of been a killer?!
- 6/10  (BEST SONG: - God Bless America)
SIXX AM The Heroine Diaries (Independent)

There's no denying that Nikki Sixx is a clever man. Besides being the mastermind and main songwriter behind MOTLEY CRUE  -
who just happens  to be - one of America's most popular ever, hard rock acts ever - Sixx obviously has a very clever business brain.

The CRUE are 'legends', their autobiography, The DIRT - was a pretty good read, even though I suspect there's more bullshit than fact
it's still pretty entertaining. Supposedly, it's going to be made into a major film - we'll just have to wait and see?!

MOTLEY CRUE have had a fairly interesting career to date, they've released 9 studio albums over a 25 year history and let's be honest here,
maybe only 5 really stack up as far as consistency is concerned. The better releases were:
Too Fast For Love (83),
Shout At The Devil(84),Dr. Feelgood (89),
the highly underated, New Tattoo (2000) and the excellent, self-titled release of 1994
featuring vocalist, John Corabi. Musically speaking, the Corabi album is by far, the best Motley Crue has ever sounded!

The remainder of albums  -  a couple of tracks per album make the grade the rest, well filler comes to mind! The bands' worst release was the absolutely hideous,
Generation Swine - which saw the once mighty CRUE,  trying to cash in on the Grunge era as their bank balances started to dry up! The album was a disaster, the exception being  - Afraid.

Through a number of
Best Of and Greatest Hits compilations, a best selling autobiography, personal relationships, band in-fighting, fatal car crashes, marriages, divorces, numerous media events, as well as Sixx's side project, Brides Of Destruction Nikki Sixx has always had something on the back burner to constantly keep him and his bands' name in the headlines.

While the first Brides album was kinda cool, the second was abysmal - mainly because Sixx wasn't invovlved so SIXX reserrects THE CRUE and the band released 3 brand new songs, featured on their recent,
Red, White & Crue - yet another compilation album! The new songs kicked, so we wait paitently for a new CRUE studio album? I'm sure it will appear when the movie, The DIRT - finally arrives.

Until then Nikki has a new side project, SIXX AM who have released a product to tide us over called, THE HEROINE DIARIES. Coincidently, a book of the same name has also been released, the story revolving around SIXX's heroine addiction during the mid 80's when MOTLEY CRUE were one of the hottest US metal bands around.

The book is an interesting read, as was The DIRT but mostly SIXX comes across as a whinging, self indulgent, egotistical, spoilt fuckin' brat -  with too much money and a fucked up attitude. What we're supposed to feel sorry for him?!

I hate to break it to you but knowbody forced you to take up heroine! Unlike you who can afford rehab, what about all the thousands of poor souls around the world destroyed by this vicious drug!

Musically, this album is self indulgent wank by someone who's trying to make money out of his story about drug addiction. A few songs actually sound pretty good,
Life Is Beautiful and Pray For Me both being up tempo pop/rock tunes that are the highlights here. Tomorrow a semi ballad has it's moments the rest well?

It's produced well and as a package it's interesting but It doesn't really do it for me.  I certainly wouldn't be rushing out to buy it that's for sure!

Look, I admire and respect Nikki Sixx for his songwriting in MOTLEY CRUE but Sixx is starting to remind me of another mastermind from another, has-been 70's US metal act that won't lie down? And we all know how much of an arrogent prick - that guy has become!

Too much money too much self indulgence, not enough sense!  -
2/10  (BEST SONG: - Pray For Me)
WHITESNAKE Good To Be Bad  (SPV)

It's been a while ... since WHITESNAKE released a studio album, their last was, Slip Of The Tongue - way back in 1989.
Over the last couple, of years, WHITESNAKE have been back out on the road, touring the world and they recently released a new,
excellent live DVD. The lovable cock-rock 'legend' - David Coverdale with new band in tow emerges with a new album to satisfy the fans?!

The new CD,
Good To Be Bad - is a good return, it's no killer but is a consistent enough sounding product that should please most of
the hard core/longtime fans of the band. It will depend on which era of the band you prefer. If you loved the late 70's early 80's blues based
UK era, there's a couple of tunes that will appeal to you. On the other hand, if you discovered the band through their MEGA successful US
period and the,
1987 album that featured the smash hit, 'Still Of The Night' then this CD is for you!

Personally, I  love both eras of WHITESNAKE so I'm happy either way. Kicking off proceedings in fine style is, Best Years which contains a maruading riff, complete with guitar heroics a plenty and a strong melodic and memorable chorus. Up next is, Can You Hear The Wind Blow a typical mid-pace Whitesnake song of impeccable quality, topped off with a good tough riff, great melody and a half-time bridge prior to a blistering solo.

The riffs keep coming via, Call On Me with yet another cracker riff that swaggers all the way home, again with the solos having shreds, licks very tasteful. Just when I thought - what a ripper of an album, along comes a very pedestrian ballad, All I Want All I Need to spoil things. Ordinary, is the word - that's one mark deducted!

Thankfully, it picks up again via the excellent title track, Good To Be Bad - now we're talking with 'classic' WHITESNAKE with all those magic ingredients, groove, riff, melody and Coverdale's tongue in cheek lyrics excellent!  The stomping romp of, All For Love stands tall with a tasty, yet tough commerical tune.  We plunge back to mundane ballad land again - via Summer Rain -
(that's two so far if you're counting!) being well, yawn another point deducted.

The album's highpoint, is definitely, Lay Down Your Love which is a pure masterpiece, having all the killer elements to make this song as popular as Still Of The Night! Yes, it has an almost carbon copy arrangement with big riffs, big chorus and of course, the mega solo spot to tantalize all the guitar heros listening at home! If this isn't the single/video then someone's ass needs a serious kicking!

The dirty blues groove of, A Fool In Love is excellent with a riff that's as tasty as 4 quarter pounders! Seriously, this is 'old school' WHITESNAKE at it's best, sounding not
too disimilar in arrangement to 'Crying In The Rain' - from
1987.  Another up tempo rocker, Got What You Need   steamrolls along at a great pace, even if the chorus slide guitar riff sounds like AEROSMITH's 'Let The Music Do The Talking'?! Regardless, another high point.

Well, it's back to another ballad,
(that's three now - two too many in my books!) Til The End Of Time which features the mature, rich timbered voice of Coverdale crooning over acoustic guitars, a nice touch. Unlike the two other insipid earlier mentioned ballads, this song has a class - far superior and is similar in execution to the Deep Purple 'classic' - Solider Of Fortune. It's definitely the best ballad of the bunch herein.

The big question here is does the new album live up to expectations? On most levels yes, there are a 6 songs that are pretty good, the rest .... The musicianship is impeccable as to be expected and the production first class with Coverdale's voice still sounding good and strong.

WHITESNAKE's
Good To Be Bad - is a decent enough return with plenty to offer fans of the band. Personally, if there were just 10 killer songs with 2 less ballads, that would've made this album an absolute killer! Basically, 3/4 of the CD is good, the 2 crappy ballads unfortunately, let's it down. That aside - it's pretty good!  - 8/10

BIG COCK Mother Load  (Import)

The undiputed 'Kings' of cock-rock, BIG COCK return - following up their 2 previous albums, "Year Of The Cock" (2005) and their,
"Self Titled" (2006) along comes the new album, "Mother Load"!

Bascially, the lads dish up more of the same, tantalizing tasty tunes, smothered in sexual induendos to set most cock lovers
into a feeding frenzy. I can see it now, men and women dressed in leather, rubbing themslves all over each other ...
wait, sorry that' s what happening back stage!

Back to the CD,
"Mother Load" is basically a carbon copy of what BIG COCK have delivered before, albeit with new titles and a couple
of new grooves. Hey, if it ain't broke ...!

Kicking off proceedings is, Get A Load Of Me is a stomping medium paced rocker, commanding your attention followed by, Stamina which has an almost Zeppelin groove both work well. Up next is straight ahead rock via, Breaking My Balls complete with tasty relentless riff that drives hard all the way! The anthemic, Bump And Grind has it all, riff, melody, attitude and I'm sure this sucker goes down well LIVE! The almost pop groove of, Road To Ruin is reminiscent of Lynch Mob (strange coincidence?) which isn't a bad thing, a good tight little rock song.

A change of pace is showcased by, Slave which slithers and crawls around the floor, a very tasty tune with a great commerical feel. A little S & M never hurt anyone, well...not unless they ask?! Up next folks it's ballad time with the funniest title ever, Don't Ask Me To Be Faithful is an absolute 'Classic' as far as ballads go! The song is a well paced, which despite it's tonge-in-cheek title is executed very well indeed and will surprise many who've written-off the band as a joke. If Journey, Toto etc, can get away with their cheesy ballads they put out, then there's no reason in the world why Big Cock shouldn't be taken far, more seriously.

Back to ass-kickin' rock via, Live To Rock a stomping bar and beer song of the highest calibre. Next up is the glorious, M.I.L.F. - for those on planet Earth who are not familar with the initials, it stands for: Mothers I'd Like to F... ! Hey, I see plenty of tasty M.I.L.F's every day, regardless the song is a 'classic' in every sense of the word. Funny title, great melody, and all around fun rock song, which should please all the die-hard fans and win plenty with a sense of humour.

We go to an almost early Van Halen/Extreme groove on, Feverish which reeks of cool, swagger and is a great different journey musically for the band, something they do to perfection an excellent tune. Closing this slab of throbbing of masculine hard rock is the blistering, Built For Speed which does exactly as the title suggests, good, fast driving hard rock.

While I'm sure they'll get shit-canned by some for any number of reasons, basic production, style, whatever BIG COCK delivers exactly what they promised! The songs are good enough as they are, they rock, the band sounds good and it's great to hear a band that wouldn't sound much different when you see 'em LIVE!

Sure, there are plenty of riffs and ideas you heard before but .. who gives a flying fornication!

BIG COCK's third album release,
"Mother Load" is their most consistent recording to date, there's plenty to sink your teeth into (excuse the pun!) with a good selection of songs that should please almost all, who love this band. Well, most women I know love a serving of Big Cock!  - so they must be right?! - 8/10
(BEST SONG: - Breaking My Balls)
FIREWIND The Premonition  (Century Media)

Shaking the ground like a battalion of the Roman Army - Greek metal merchants FIREWIND return with another slick sounding, impressive
new CD titled,
The Premonition.

This time around the lads deliver an even more consistent package, than their previous, very  tasty effort,
Alliegence (2006).

Filled with catchy choruses, frantic power metal, commerical hard rock hey, sounds good to me?! Songwise, well, it's basically the
formula the band have explored before with a little more consistency and commerical edge, topped off with numerous, infectious songs
divided into a couple of different genres.

Opening song, Into The Fire has a tasty intro that explodes into a power metal monster, complete with hamonised vocals, meancing riffs and bewildering double kick attack!  The commerical groove of, Head Up High sounds almost akin to goth rockers, Him, The 69 Eyes etc. with enough bite supplied by FIREWIND to concive you otherwise. A catchy little tune. The melodic, Mercenary Man has 'Top 40' hit written all over it, with a quaint, catchy pop flavoured melodic hard rock song of the highest calibre a hit you ask, well it should be!

Angels Forgive Me is a hard charging ball buster, with a riff as tasty as suchi, having a catchy chorus with plenty on offer for all metal lovers. The light 'n shade of, Remembered which is a tough metal riffed beast that dives and weaves with a very infectious melody. Well, it's time for the mega ballad, courtesy of, My Loneliness which delivers exactly what you expect, soaring chorus, nice guitar licks, chunky solo a good ballad executed well and it does the job.

Next up is, Circle Of Life which is my favorite song, reminding me a little of German metal 'legends' ACCEPT with a chunky riff, anthem chorus all the best things about a good metal tune. The power metal flavoured, The Silent Code has spark, might and melody, all wrapped into one making this track another standout!

The next song will surprize many, Maniac yes, the same horrible song from that hideous dance film, which has been given the FIREWIND treatment and to their credit it's sounds pretty bloody good. I imagine it will be a single/video in the future - hey, don't laugh this tune among others here could easily push the band into Mainstream territory bums on seats if it takes off?!!

Closing this CD is, Life Foreclosed which is a tough, semi-ballad rock song with tons of light 'n shade complemented by tenacious riffs which is a great way to finish off a very satisfying album.

FIREWIND's new CD,
"The Premonition" - is a superb, well rounded effort that should please their fans and I expect this new CD will open many new doors for this excellent metal act.   - 9/10   (BEST SONG: - Into The Fire)
WARRIOR Fighting For The Earth (Reissue )

Talk about a 'classic' metal band!  WARRIOR are a US metal act held in very high regard by many including myself.
I've championed the band for years, I personally think they are one of America's finest ever, metal acts!

The band have never achieved MAJOR success and have an almost, 'cult' status among long time metalheads.
I remember, back in 1985 when I bought WARRIOR's debut platter,
"Fighting For The Earth" (then released on 10 records which I still  -
have sealed in plastic bag) having seen the video for the same titled song on TV. I was very impressed with what I saw and heard and
still remember purchasing the new WARRIOR album and AC/DC's new,
"Fly On The Wall" album on the same day.
I never thought I'd say it, but AC/DC came in well behind as far as product was concerned!

Now here was a US metal act, (remember it's 1985 and LA Metal was really starting to gather momentum with bands like, Ratt, Motley Crue, WASP among others selling records.) who were not part of the above 'hair metal' genre. WARRIOR (and other geniune metal acts like, MALICE, ARMOURED SAINT) unlike the above mentioned acts were a geniune, bona fide METAL bands that could easily rub shoulders with British 'legends', JUDAS PRIEST for writing, good tough, breath taking, hard assed metal anthems.

WARRIOR have released 4 albums during their 25 year career and are currently in the studios writing and recording their fifth album release, which hopefully will see release by years end?! Original vocalist, Parramore McCarty returns joining sole original member and guitarist, Joe Floyd. I can assure you that numerous 'old school' metalheads, like myself are anxiously awaiting this release!

Meanwhile, this is where it all started, WARRIOR's
"Fighting For The Earth" is a bona fide, "classic" in every sense of the word. It's filled with glorious harmonies,
excellent riffs, powerful vocals, brilliant and interesting arrangements and every song is first class. The band herein is fautless!

The album has been released on CD before, in 1990 and again in the mid 90's through a Japanese label but both times it was deleted shorty there after. Vinyl copies of this record have always fetched big money over the internet, such is the 'status' of this record among some die-hards!

Kicking off with one of metal's all-time anthems, Fighting For The Earth has it all! A killer riff, powerful chorus, amazing vocals, execututed to perfection by a band that is absolutely superb in every department and above all - it's thoroughly convincing an 'ALL-TIME CLASSIC' song! Up next is, Only The Strong a melodramatic tune of epic preportions, containing a haunting vocal line that's absolute magic. It's galloping groove is also very tasty. Vocalist, Parrmore McCarty is a highly underrated singer, he's easily one of metal's best vocalists, alongside the greats like: Halford, Dickinson, Owens, Dio, etc. - McCarty possessing brillant phrasing, power, range and a voice that soars effortlessly into the stratosphere pure class!

The tough tenacious, Ruler is a very nasty sounding song which showcases WARRIOR at it's finest, an excellent groove, awesome use of  light' n shade capped off with outstanding guitaring and captivating vocals classic! The up tempo high energy of, Mind Over Matter raises the bar up a notch with a commanding riff that just hammers, backed up by McCarty's excellent vocal performance, all cemented in place by a tight, tenacious band - that really is one of the Ferrai's, as far as  'tradional metal' - as far as I'm concerned.

The sheer elegance, class and awesome display on, Defenders Of Creation is pure magic, showcasing the ultimate 'epic' metal song, all the cliches are given the maxium treatment here and WARRIOR pull it off. The song is majestic, contains a tough relentess riff, great solos, awesome vocals - perfection at it's finest.

Lifting the tempo, Day Of The Evil   courtesy of a steam rolling riff cascades along with some very tasty dual guitar harmonies, tantalizing vocals, another rollicking song.

We come to a grinding halt with, Cold Fire a slow ballad that has a quality, many could only dream of. Many regular readers know of my hate of most ballads! Well, this song really is the exception every thing about this song hooks me in, the melody, the arrangement, the chorus to me it has that 'magic' that puts it among 'classic' ballads like, Scorpion's "Holiday" or Led Zeppelin's "Going To California" Get my drift?!

PTM1 is short and to the point with McCarty delivering some very interesting words. Closing out the album is the cleverly titled, Welcome Aboard a nice sentiment considering WARRIOR have just delivered such a good product. This song is heavy, has a cruising groove and then just wallops you all the way home. WARRIOR have a definite sound of their own, their guitar tone for one, is instantly reckonizable. Their songs are written in their own unique style and to be honest, while they might have moments of similarity to other metal bands WARRIOR have that certain charm, spark that seperates them from the rest.

I love WARRIOR's
"Fighting For The Earth" - always have always will, so maybe I'm a little bias?! To me this is an absolute killer album from start to finish and it will always be in my, "all time" favorite album list! The fact that finally, after all these years it's being released on CD is marvelous and I urge everyone of you to discover or re-discover - one of the finest ever US metal acts and how very good this album really is!  An absolute CLASSIC! - 10/10!  (BEST SONG: - Fighting For The Earth)
FIGHT - "K5 The War Of Words Demos"  (Riot)

For those who don't know, FIGHT - is the name of Rob Halford's (The Metal God) first band after leaving the 'legend'  UK metal masters
JUDAS PRIEST, back in the early 90's.

FIGHT quickly released 2 albums and an EP during their short and exciting existence, with a couple of songs surprisingly, being included
on the recently released,
The Metal God Essentials Volume 1 - under the HALFORD band name?!

FIGHT's tough tenacious debut,
War Of Words (1993) was a real cracker of an album, showcasing a band that delivered some breath,
taking heavy metal, some very good songs all topped off with Halford's brilliant voice - pleasing most who admired the man and his career.
Unfortunately, the second and follow-up release,
A Small Deadly Space (1995) was far below the explosive debut in both songs,
execution and most importantly, musical direction.

While, WOW had an almost heavy Priest sound, ala 'painkiller' - ASDS musically speaking, suffered greatly from a more grunge influence, which by 1995 was the 'mainstream' in music during that time and a number of metal acts, dipped their toes into this incidious musical genre. To most, it just didn't cut it as far as many fans were concerned. Strangely, when Rob Halford emerged some 7 years later with his new metal act, HALFORD the similar change in musical progression also happened with their first 2 album releases?!

Anyway, enough waffle let's get down to business. This new FIGHT release is actually the 'Demo' recordings of the debut album titled
, K5 -The War Of Words Demos includes 5 previously unreleased songs.

I personally like the demo like production, giving this awesome release a completely different a new sound, that does not distract or differ greatly from the product from it's original form. Basically, it's the same set of songs with some slight variation in tempos and a few different arrangements.

Songwise, Into The Pit has a different intro while remaining virtually the same, it seems slightly slower in tempo with Nailed To The Gun sounding almost a carbon copy albeit with a more traditional metal groove, with a sparse sound that sounds great!

Next up is a previously unreleased track, Now You Die which has a monster riff and is hard as nails with a relentless riff which i'm sure has been used in later Halford material?! The slow grind of, Life In Black works very well here, having an almost crushing effect, making this song even tougher sounding tempo wise, it's definitely slower than the original and with a raw sound it's sounds awesome! Always a favorite, Kill It has lost none of it's appeal with a crunching riffed song that crushes all before it. The distorted vocals are OK but I must admit while I like this version the original version is far tougher!

A cascading building intro unleashes, Contortion another killer song that steamrolls along via a repeative menacing riff awesome! Another unreleased tune, Forbidden makes great use of light 'n shade with a tune that sounds almost, 'old school' ala JUDAS PRIEST in execution, definitely making this one of the most interesting of the 5 new tracks.

The title track, War Of Words is up next, still tough, still tenacious a mean and nasty metal song! Another new track, Psycho Suicide steamrolls along via double kick drums, sticcatto riffing topped off with a haunting verse melody couresy of uncle Rob and completed with chanting chorus, a definite highlight. The doom tempo of, Down offering another new track will please some, some will find it ruther dull, depends on your taste?

We jump up a couple of notches with, Vicious a relentless riffed beast that is pure magic. We slip into new tune, Beat Denies the monster riff which I'm sure has been used in another Halford tune? Regardless, the song here works well with light 'n shade, all out metal a tasty tune.  The slow grind of, Laid To Rest (possibly the album's low point) is OK while the humouress, Jesus Saves is quaint but well ... Dead Men Talk is the last of the previously unreleased songs on offer and it's OK with a moderate metal tune. Closing off this collection is, For All Eternity sounding not much different to the original version.

Look, FIGHT's
"K5 War Of Words Demos" is a great collection of material that delivers some mind snapping metal tunes by a band that definitely, delivers the goods LIVE! The production, it must be said is rather polished, (similar to the recent Sebastian Bach's release) compared to authentic demo recordings but it's still worth getting yourself a copy if you like the man and his bands!  - 9/10   (BEST SONG: - Nailed To The Gun)

DOKKEN Lightning Strikes Again  (Frontiers)

Once hailed as the 'Rolls Royce' of LA 80's metal acts, DOKKEN have had an interesting career to say the least.
During the mid 80's, the band along with numerous US acts rode the mainstream metal wave and like many had a couple of platinum
selling albums during their time. Over the years, they too have had their share of name calling, in-fighting, numerous turbulent stage
performances, some reportedly ending in an on stage brawl!

Regardless of these facts, (which long term band doesn't have issues with it's members) DOKKEN have released some very good
albums along their long and chequered career. The bands' 'classic' platinum selling albums are held in very high regard by some,
most would agree that, "
Tooth & Nail", "Under Lock And Key" and "Back For The Attack" are definitely DOKKEN's best, most consistent
releases to date?!
Right!

Well, guess what after years of releasing mostly, lack lustre efforts during the last decade, 1995's
"Dysfunctional" being the exception, DOKKEN surprisingly, come storming back with their new album/CD, "Lightning Strikes Again"! Well, indeed is does - because this new DOKKEN album has all the right elements to win back a
legion of 'old school' DOKKEN fans, it's that bloody good!

While guitar mastero, George Lynch is absent, replacement John Levin (XYZ) does an absolutely outstanding job, imitating the 'legend' guitarist with a carbon copy of his style, ability, groove not to mention guitar tone! in-fact it's impossible to tell that ol' George isn't playing, LEVIN pulls it off perfectly!

Now that the biggest question is answered, what about the album is it any good? In a word, YES! DOKKEN deliver the ideal receipe for success, this new album could become a 'classic' it's that dam good. The sound is definetly mid 80's, with a crisp and full production, that thankfully isn't overdone the whole package sounding as if it was recorded around the peak of the band.

Do the songs deliver? Yes, they do with opening tune, Standing On The Outside which is 'classic' DOKKEN in every sense of the word, cool riff, great melody, infectious groove, tasteful melodic solo yeap, it's all here to me! Next up, Give Me A Reason delivers another chestnut sounding song, that the band are reknown for with all the above qualities.  Speaking of quality, the next song rises ever so slightly for, Heart Of Stone which is again, another 'classic' sounding tune of impeccable quality, delivering an excellent DOKKEN song.

Four songs in, so far so good and, Disease doesn't disappoint with a moody, mid paced romp that is quite tasty. Next up, there had to be one eventually a ballad, unlike countless lame ballads from countless metal acts, DOKKEN along with SCORPIONS compose some of the best ballads ever penned by metal acts and again they deliver
a good, commerical, catchy inoffensive ballad with, How I Miss Your Smile which will be a favorite with the ladies.

It's back to riff cranking rock via, Oasis a slow grinding hard rocker, that is cool while the cascading effect of, Point Of Know Return which is quite possibly the best song herein, which is saying something as most of this album kicks like it should. The song is a ripper!  Another ballad, I Remember has an almost Beatles type of groove to it, with the typical Don Dokken melody line that works well and as ballads go it's pretty good.

Crunching rock is well represented by, Judgement Day with the band cruising along effortlessly and it's the relentless riffed, It Means being a slow grinder with a melodic chorus. Next up, Release Me - is reminiscent of the better material featured on the bands' 1997,
'Shadowlife' - a stirring, melodic rock tune that sounds good to these old ears, the solo is excellent, making it a standout. Crunchy riffola is showcased by, This Fire a great stampedeing rocker with that infectious chorus, simple magic! Closing this release is the balls out rocker, Sunset Superstar - which basically is a modern version of the song, 'Tooth & Nail' and it cranks from start to finish.

There will be some fans who will simply dimiss this release because, George Lynch isn't involved and while I agree, it would of been great if he had contributed, it didn't happen so GET OVER IT!!

Just like the recent excellent return by WHITESNAKE, so to is the new DOKKEN CD,
"Lightning Strikes Again" is an absolute killer return, it's definitely the BEST album under the DOKKEN name since 1995 - FACT! This album could quite easily slot in between, "Under Lock & Key" and "Back For The Attack"- no shit, that's what it sounds
like and that's how good it is!  About
bloody time!  - 9/10   (BEST SONG: - Heart Of Stone)
DEF LEPPARD Songs From The Sparkle Lounge  (Universal)

The most successful UK hard rock act ever, DEF LEPPARD - return with a brand new studio album, Songs From The Sparkle Lounge,
their first studio album of new material since their X album!

While some fans were pleased with,
"X" and to a lessor extent the bands' other releases of the last decade, all pale in comparison
compared to the new CD.

Forget the recent mundane cover album, Yeah from a couple of years ago, that was well ... so hopefully the bands' longtime fans,
will give the boys another chance, as the new album could quite possibly see the return of DEF LEPPARD to the Big League?!

Yes folks, the lovable lads from Sheffield have written a pretty good album that sees the best elements of DEF LEPPARD's music return with a number of songs that could be
'Hits' if given the right exposure. With the current ressurgence of rock music, now is the time is to release a decent product and thankfully, DEF LEPPARD have done just that!

Along with the recent return CD's by veteran acts, WHITESNAKE and DOKKEN - DEF LEPPARD also return with a cracker of an album full of good, hard rock songs that should please their loyal fans no end!

Kicking off things in fine syle is, Go a slow grinding beast with an infectious chorus that is pure magic, albeit with Leppard's familar musical groove reminiscent of '
Hysteria' meets 'Adrenalize'. The difference herein is that this CD, actually kicks some ass compared to recent watered down releases! The next song, Nine Lives cruises into TOP 40 mode effortlessly with plenty of sugar coating to entice a generation of loyal fans. One of the album's trumph songs is, C'Mon C'Mon reeking of THE SWEET type grooves and melodies, reminding the listener just how dam good this band is at writing infectious, radio friendly tunes with 'hit' written all over them!

The soppy pull-at-the-heart-strings ballad, Love - wanders in and out and might impress pubescent nubiles but personally, it's the albums' low point and being only real ballad herein should of been a killer, instead it's overblown and fairly faceless. Thankfully, the lads are saved by, Tomorrow returning the band to the real territory, courtsey of another excellent pop laced rock song of quality. The groove driven rumblings of, Cruise Control which lives up to it's title does exactly as the title suggests, a good medium paced atmospheric rocker with more groove than a gaggle of Jamacians!

The riff infested, Hallucinate is another jewel in the crown, easily another of the standouts here with a plethora of  groove, catchy chorus all topped off with a fairly decent riff. The moody light 'n shade of, Only The Good Die Young sounds awfully similar to the Beatles in places, this quaint pop flavoured tune has single, stamped all over it. The up tempo gallop of, Bad Actress zips along at an almost, break neck speed, something we've not heard from DEF LEPPARD in a long, long time!

The slow grinding riff of, Come Undone is a welcome change musically speaking, a robust tune topped off with the usual tasty chorus. Another trip down the light 'n shade road via, Gotta Let Go which has melody, a little angst complete with crashing chorus making it a bombastic song and a great way to close a very good product.

Some will find this album is a very strong return by Britain's, DEF LEPPARD with
"Songs From The Sparkle Lounge" easily being the BEST album released by the band
since their mid 80's 'hey day!

Forget the mediorce release of the last decade, if you love
"Pyromania" and "Hysteria" then this CD is the near perfect companion, it's a great return that's almost gets the perfect score, only track 4 'Love', letting it down! - 9/10    (BEST SONG: Hallucinate)
WHITE LION Return Of The Pride  (Frontiers)

It may be WHITE LION by name - but it's definitely not WHITE LION by nature that's for sure! Yes, there are moments where this disc
almost, reaches those past glories, but overall it's not really a true representation of WHITE LION.

It's not all bad news though, vocalist Mike Tramp is obviously trying to re-invent the WHITE LION brand name via a good, well executed
and sometimes quite entertaining, melodic rock product.

Basically, the main missing ingredient on this new WHITE LION album is the absence of original guitar hero, Vito Bratta without whom,
this CD just doesn't ever sound like the band of old and that will probably spell disaster as far as album sales go!

In all honesty, it's basically a Mike Tramp solo record, albeit with slightly more crunch. That's it in a nut shell!

That's not to say,
Return To The Pride isn't a satisfying album, in-fact is you've followed Tramp's career via his FREAKS OF NATURE project and his recent solo outings, then you know exactly what to expect here?!

There are a number of rock tunes, Live Your Life and Gonna Do It My Way both having what it takes, while the swagger of, Finally See The Light is one of the best tunes herein being, catchy, commercial and by far the hardest track on offer. The up tempo crunch of, Let Me Be Me cracks the whip while medium paced light 'n' shade rockers, Set Me Free and I Will are good melodic rock songs.

To be expected, there's a couple of ballads, something Tramp has done well for years with, Never Left You Go being the major heart string puller while, Dream is a quaint, pop song possessing a mid tempo groove and is a standout, having an infectious chorus and it's 'classic' Tramp!

We also get epic type workouts via, Battle At Little Big Horn and Songre De Cristo both have plenty to offer fans, with some good arrangements and both have that special touch - that seperates them from the rest of the material herein.

WHITE LION's
Return Of The Pride is a well put together, good product that's entertaining and quite satisfying as far as an album goes but it doesn't truly represent the band in it's true form. Good, not great! - 7/10   (BEST SONG: - Gonna Do It My Way)
HOUSE OF LORDS Come To My Kingdom  (Frontiers)

The bands' last album, World Upside Down - impressed me greatly, with some of the slickest sounding, commercial, melodic rock
that I'd heard in years. The album was a consistent package that rocked hard when it needed too, without sacrificing any of the brilliant
melody and infectious tunes. Well, that was then - this is now ...

The new album by HOUSE OF LORDS,
Come To My Kingdom in comparison, is a bitter disappointment, failing to reach the glorious
heights of it's predecessor!

The musicianship is again superb, the execution is again, first class but what the new CD lacks, is those crunching, hard rock tunes
that made 'World Upside Down' such a winner, satisfing new comers to the band like myself. Hey, it's just a personal opinion, but it's
definitely a let down after such an excellent previous platter.

There are no strong, hard edged rockers herein with the calibre of songs like, Rock Bottom, I'm Free or These Are The Times which had heaps of crunch to entice the listener. On the new CD only the title track and possibly, I Don't Wanna Wait All Night and maybe, In A Perfert World - come close to ascertaining the high standards of the above mentioned tunes, but in the end there simply isn't enough crunch on offer, that's why this album
fails to get there!

It's sad but the fact is, there are no real killers here, there's plenty of fillers and it just leaves an empty feeling in the pit of my stomache. Sometimes bands deliver, sometimes they don't!

Just like the new Judas Priest album, the new HOUSE OF LORDS album also, is a major let down with the band definitely, not firing on all pistons!

I was really hanging out for this CD, I have to say that I'm fairly disappointed with the latest from HOUSE OF LORDS -
"Come To My Kingdom". It could/should of been a lot better, it's OK but far from great!  - 7/10   (BEST SONG: - Come TO My Kingdom)
JUDAS PRIEST Nostrodamus (SonyBMG)

The British metal 'legends' have returned with their new 2 disc CD,  Nostrodamus - being the second release since the return of
original screamer, Rob 'Metal God' Halford. It's also the first 'concept' album by the band in their almost, 35 year history!

Upon listening to this epic, melodramatic and at times boring collection of songs, I have to ask myself what the hell were these
guys thinking?! While the concept, time, dedication to the project is undeniable, I would of thought an all out attack and aggression
fueled new JUDAS PRIEST album kicking ass from start to finish - would of been a far superior choice, which would of confirmed
that the band were indeed, truly back!

Their return platter from 2005,
Angel Of Retribution - didn't exactly set the world on fire, let's be honest. Too retro, too safe
were some of the comments, others suggested giving Ripper the boot was a mistake?! The album definitely rates as one of the bands' weakest albums in their career. Personally, I rate it slightly higher than Priest's worst ever record,
"Turbo"! The first 4 songs on "A.O.R". are OK the rest, are filler!

Well, the same could be said about,
Nostrodamus - while the concept works in places, most songs are overblown, some have keyboards, some lumber around like a big sloth and there's not too many songs that have that bite, or attack that Judas Priest used to deliver! Maybe, it'll grow on me but the fact is, not too many songs here give me the high I get from hearing killer Priest songs like, Painkiller, Metal Gods, Screaming For Vengeance, Sinner you all know what I'm talking about!!

That's what's missing here, there's not enough killer songs on offer with the calibre of the above mentioned 'classic' tunes! A couple of tracks, almost have what it takes but somehow, they just don't get to where they should be going to!

Don't get me wrong, the record sounds faultless, with a crisp production, highlighting an Iconic metal act that have executed a brilliant production. It's a shame, there will be many fans who will dismiss this album and probably the band, after 2 sad mediorce efforts in a row. There will be those, who will seek out a replacement bands, who still deliver Judas Priest styled music, not satisfied with the bands' new safe and user friendly direction.

I LOVE this band, but I'm personally very disappointed in what I'm hearing nowadays! In today's metal world, there are a number of acts who plunder the Judas Priest style,
and in a couple of cases, they actually deliver what Priest used to do with their recent releases - far outshining JUDAS PRIEST!

While, this year has already seen a number of 'old school' acts returning with excellent album releases, some in-fact delivering their best product in years,
JUDAS PRIEST however - seems to of missed the boat and their return opus,
"Nostrodamus" is fairly ordinary by comparison. Oh, how the mighty have fallen!
For 'die-hard' fans only!  -
6/10   (BEST SONG: - Nostrodamus)
INDEX
MOTLEY CRUE Saints Of Los Angeles  (Motley/Shock)

Love 'em or hate 'em, you certainly can't ignore LA's favorite upstarts, MOTLEY CRUE! In their 25 year plus career that started in Hollywood,
back in the early 80's The CRUE as their loyal fans know them by, have become one of America's most successful, at times
most turbulent, talked about bands that has emerged in the US since KISS!

The numerous girlfriends, weddings, marriages, divorces, in fighting between band members, drug and alcohol addictions, car crashes,
TV shows, etc. MOTLEY CRUE have always been in the news.

Musically, the band had a couple of decent consistent albums, mainly in their early years before the band went off the rails these being,
Too Fast For Love(82) and Shout At The Devil (83) - to most, still the best releases to this very day!

The rest of the bands catalog is fairly, hit and miss as far as value for money goes - with numerous albums suffering from lack of real substance, containing a couple of good tracks surrounded by a sea of fillers. Yes, that includes their very successful,
Dr, Feelgood (89) - album, which I personally think only the excellent title track,
Kickstart My Heart and Rattlesnake Shake - were any good the rest, woeful springs to mind!

The better album releases as far as consistency goes were the,
self titled (John Corabi release) and 2000's New Tattoo both far out weighing, any of the rest by a country mile. The hideous, Generation Smile - was probably the worst record ever, even eclipsing the insipid, "Theater Of Pain" released under the MOTLEY CRUE banner!

Well, a few tunes over the last decade proved that The Crue - could still write good rock songs, Bitter Pill, Enslaved and Sick Love Song - are prime examples, so now we come to the new latest MOTLEY CRUE album
Saints Of Los Angeles!

Yes, we've all heard the title track and to be perfectly honest, it's the album's highpoint, mainly because it reeks of 'classic' Crue being a good, tough sounding hard rock tune with all the right stuff, to ignite a legion of old glam rockers, dusting off their leathers!

The rest of the album .... has a number of tunes that have some interesting grooves but in all reality, none of them come up to the standard of the title track! We must remember, that this album is basically the "Dirt" soundtrack, with an almost 'concept' album feel. Well, another Los Angeles based act, L.A. GUNS did a 'Hollywood' concept album a couple of years back with their last release, 'Tales From The Strip' so we'll deduct a point for lack of orginality!

Kicking off with an intro titled, L.A.M.E.
(yes that's what I'd call it too!) we zip into the punk flavoured, Face Down In The Dirt which is a pedestrian rocker at best. The slow groove of, What's It Gonna Take has sleaze but not much else, while the grind of, Down At The Whiskey is at least quite chunky but suffers from a bland chorus!

Motherfucker Of The Year is interesting, having a tough riff and an almost modern feel that sounds pretty good. The light 'n shade of, The Animal In Me sounds like a 'single' to me and could work, sounding reminiscent of something off, 'Generation Swine'.  The up tempo charge of, Welcome To The Machine is definitely a winner, another highpoint herein, possessing a good, tough sounding Crue song, this is what we wanna hear!

The almost DOWN riffed, Just Another Psycho is a mid pacer with a melodic rock chorus, while the next song, Chicks = Trouble is gonna be the BIG favorite with many a young man and for that matter there'll be plenty of old men who agree with the sentiment and enjoy this anthemic tune!

The sleaze of, This Ain't A Love Song will appeal to many with it's almost cruisy groove, the stomp of, White Trash Circus has a swagger crossed with a punk attitude, making it an interesting feel.

The last song is titled, Goin' Out Swingin' does exactly what is states, with the Motley's going ala MOTORHEAD with a fast crunching rocker, that steamrolls off into the distance ...

Honestly, I think, "Saints Of Los Angeles" is a OK album, it fails to measure up to my above mentioned MOTLEY CRUE albums for substance or consistency. There will be some who really like this record as it sits comfortably between, 'Dr Feelgood' and 'New Tattoo' in style, but I prefer the latter.

I think Nikki Sixx may have given his better songs to the first,
"Brides Of Destruction" album and the two good tunes from, "The Heroine Diaries" releases, the video/singles, Life Is Beautiful and Pray For Me are far superier to most of the songs herein.

Those songs would of sounded great here - had they appeared on MOTLEY CRUE's new album,
"Saints Of Los Angeles" then it too would of been as strong as fellow
LA hard rockers, DOKKEN's - recent excellent return album!

Good, but it could of been, so much better!  -
6/10   (BEST SONG: -  Welcome To The Machine)
BRAINSTORM Downburst  (Indy)

Not knowing anything about this bands' past, sure I've heard of them but I never really got into them, so to speak. Upon receiving a
copy of their latest release, Downburst- and I gotta tell you, after the initial playing, I'm was very impressed indeed!

Upon pressing play BRAINSTORM kick over and rise to the occasion in fantastic fashion and then it hits you, a hungry, metallic
beast erupts with plenty of passion, great songs, excellent melody lines, cracker jack riffs yes, it's all here! Of course some of
you already know this but to newcomers take notice!

To add to the above accolades, I also have to mention their style which is definitely 'traditional metal' in flavor, with influences bridging
the gap from 'old school' to the best of today's metal world and this merging works very well here!

Kicking off this ball tearing opus is, Falling Spiral Down which virtually kicks over like a machine, erupting into a flat out double kick drum monster fuckin' absolutely brilliant! Now, this what metal should sound like in 2008! The combination of old and new ideas within the metal music herein, is truly a breath of fresh air and expertly displayed with an absolutely excellent sounding band and style!

Up next is the steamroller riff driven beast, Fire Walk With Me an anthem of almost biblical proportions, crunching out of the speakers. The commercial groove of, Stained With Sin has bite, class, style, melody and did I mention it's very radio friendly feel?! If it's not a future single/video, then someone's ass needs a serious kicking a very catchy tune! Power metal rears it's head via, Redemption In Your Eyes a blistering, well constructed and at times, a very melodic hunk of hard rock!

We now change tempo to a slow 'epic' semi ballad, End Of Sorrow complete with backing strings, piano everything but the kitchen sink! But in all seriousness, it does live up to it's grandeur! The bounce of, How Do You Feel reminds me of melodic acts like, Jaded Heart/Gotthard/House Of Lords etc. being a great crunchy, melodic hard rock tune executed to perfection, sounding great!

The gallop of, Protect Me From Myself blazes a path through the metal landscape with the ease of a 'Lambogini' sports car, that's how slick these bastards sound truly, excellent metal! The light 'n shade displayed on, Surrounding Walls - is absolutely 'first class' all the way, with a very modern sound, that builds into a melodramatic chorus a very clever song, again a possible single/video?!

Crunching metal is expelled through, Frozen a jackhammer tune one minute, a half time monster the next, a tough tune that works well. The third tune that is single/video material, All Alone has a nasty swaggering riff which slips into a melodic chorus, complete with soaring vocals, backed by a menacing band awesome! Power metal via, Crawling In Chains reminds me of 'old school' thrash, combined with the crunch of today, very tasty!

Closing this wonderful opus is, Hold Tight a moving piece of music which is basically a ballad at the end of the CD, a move that is becoming a fairly familiar occurance recently, among numerous hard rock and metal acts?!

BRAINSTORM's
Down Burst - is a very satisfying album if you're a lover of traditional metal or have grown to accept the metal of today and enjoy it for what the band delievers and beleive me they do deliver!

I consider this album as strong as recent releases by Primal Fear, Testament, Beyond Fear - with moments with a hint of  the harder edged melodic acts, Jaded Heart, Gotthard etc. A very strong product ... definitely a contender! -
9/10   (BEST SONG: - Falling Spirial Down)
JOURNEY - Revelation  (Frontiers)

Now, here's a band that I admit, I was never a BIG fan of but I didn't mind a few songs, Lights, Wheel In The Sky, Be Good To Yourself
all songs are from the bands' time during the late 70's when JOURNEY were one of America's biggest selling acts!

I remember their albums like,
Infinity, Departure, Evolution, Escape - so when I tell you that JOURNEY's brand new album,
Revelation- is as good as their best work you can believe, I'm deadly serious!

While the band were MASSIVE in the US, the rest of the world didn't embrace them and in Australia the band received no airplay
that I heard on mainstream radio, when I was kid!

JOURNEY have continued to release product over the years, they've also had a couple of singers come and go, most recently,
Jeff Scott Soto who joined the band briefly for a very successful US tour.

Just as a number of established 'old School' acts who've released excellent products for 2008, Def Leppard, Dokken and Whitesnake are the acts in question add another excellent return to your list, as US melodic rockers - JOURNEY return with all the hall marks of their best years, releasing possibly their finest album, since those 'glory' days of their era!

"Revelation" sees JOURNEY kicking and fighting all the way, with more bite, zest and excitement than this band has had in years! Part of the equation is the addition of new vocalist, Arnel Pinda who possesses a voice which is smooth as silk and is uncannily reminiscent of original singer, Steve Perry! In -fact, you wouldn't know the difference unless you read the liner notes this guy is an almost carbon copy and that along with the bands' belief in the new guy is the main factor why this CD is so, bloody good!

The band rocks when it wants to, Wildest Dream is a up tempo rocker, that has a crack in it's step and is a good, tough melodic rock tune. Never Walk Away is 'classic' JOURNEY, having a rollicking groove, a sing along chorus, just fits like an old sweater, marvelous!

Another tune that also delivers is, Change For The Better which zips along at a healthy pace with enough crunch to get the foot tapping along with the very infectious melody! The slow mesmerizing canter of, Faith In The Heartland could be a 'hit' if given radio airplay, having a very radio friendly quality.

Where Did I Lose Your Love is a mid tempo rocker with all the right ingredients to sail effortlessly up the charts, while the light'n' shade of, What It Takes To Win also is great melodic rock. I love the slow grind of, Let It Take You Back which has a great groove not to mention an excellent chorus. Most of the tunes could, be hit singles - if only mainstream radio programmers would get their shit together?!

JOURNEY have also been one of the most successful US acts  who've written numerous ballads, some would argue that they've written some of the best ballads ever and reluctantly even I'm enclined to agree! Herein there's a few that measure up, my personal favorite is, Like A Sunshower which has a similar feel to their old song, Lights! The rest of the ballads, After All These Years, What I Needed, Turn Down The World Tonight all pull at the heart strings and will be loved by many.

An instrumental titled, The Journey is a fun trip with the lads flexing their musical muscles and as to be expected, this impeccable band of musicians are as slick as a Rolls Royce!

JOURNEY's
Revelation - is just that, delivering possibly one of the bands' strongest, most consistent products in almost 2 decades! A killer return!  - 9/10

ALICE COOPER Along Came A Spider  (SPV)

The master of 'shock rock', ALICE COOPER returns with possibly his strongest, most consistent release in years with his new album,
Along Came A Spider!

Overall, it's a mouth watering collection of excellent songs that travel the length and depth of Alice's career delivering all the elements
that made ALICE COOPER a household name! Yes, folks there are plenty of tasty tunes here with a real 'old school' ALICE type groove
to most of them.

The almost industrial/dance flavour of, Wake The Dead is extremely infectious and will have many bopping in no time! Sleazy rock is
displayed via, Catch Me If You Can again with a extremely catchy chorus and a driving groove while the slow grind of, Vengeance Is Mine
is pure 'Alice' and no doubt, will be a favorite with many?! All are commerical in sound and all rock hard!

Seems ol' Alice hasn't lost his sense of humour either as displayed on, In Touch With Your Feminine Side a rollicking rocker, again with that commercial edge with enough bite to satisfy most. The crunch of, Wrapped In Silk stomps out with a crisp, tough riff that reeks of 'classic' Alice, circa 70's!

As to be expected, there's a ballad, Killed By Love which definitely ambles down the 'Only Women Bleed' road and guess what it works again and while it's equally a good song, I doubt it will receive the success of the former?!

Back to ass kicking rock courtesy of, I'm Hungry which wanders in and out of light 'n shade territory. The swagger of, The One That Got Away again serves up another commercial, hard rock tune with substance and appeal, while another ballad, Salvation cruises along and is a quaint little ditty that will find many fans of the man.

Closing this opus is, I Am The Spider which as it title suggests, is a crawling little monster that has all the right stuff, to end a very good, satisfying album.

ALICE COOPER's
Along Came A Spider is another excellent return by a veteran artist who also delivers, quite possibly one of his strongest releases in his history, with plenty to offer fans of both successful eras of ALICE COOPER!  Very, very good!  - 9/10    (BEST SONG: - Catch Me If You Can)

MOTORHEAD Motorizer  (SPV)

The British Iconic musical institution named MOTORHEAD who with 30 years of ass kickin' music under their belts, keep doing what
comes naturally delivering another cracker of an album titled,
Motorizer!

Believe it or not, this is in-fact the bands' - 24th album release and you all know what to expect and believe me, the lads don't disappoint.

Production is again handled by Cameron Webb
(who's now worked on the last four albums) delivering a good tight mix, with all the
elements there for the listening. It's now over 12 years since this particular trio of, Kilmister, Cambell and Dee linked up and boy
can you hear the
machine firing on all cylinders!

Motorizer has a much more varied selection of tunes, compared to last couple of recent releases with numerous musical grooves within the 'Motorhead' world,
from nearly all eras of the band are showcased herein.

Kicking off proceeding is, Runaround Man a perfect opener that sets the pace from the outset with a crunching riff, crushing rhythm and sing-a-long melody, all in all brilliant! The catchy, Teach You How To Sing The Blues has it all, a typical Motorhead blues hard rocker with the added tongue in cheeks lyrics.

The glorious chest beater, When The Eagle Screams has a nasty relentless riff that's intertwined with a stomping chorus with moments of pure grandeur! Next up is one
of the albums' highlights, Rock Out which is basically a new version of their 'classic',
'Ace Of Spades' with new lyrics and a great sing-a-long anthem chorus and boy does
it work simply fabulous!

It's a slow groove for, One Short Life which stomps around belting everything in sight, while the stampeding roller coaster riffed, Buried Alive is a real monster being,
pure 'classic' Motorhead and it's definitely, another of the CD's highlights!

The subtle, English Rose has spark, melody and most importantly a crushing, four bar blues groove that works a treat as usual through this veteran bands' hands!
The up tempo charge of, Back On The Chain is cemented in place by an infectious chorus, very tatsy!

Another of the album's highpoints, depending on personal taste will possibly be, Heroes possessing a wicked riff, along with great melody and the dynamics of an 'epic' styled tune, having that certain sense of style - that should be loved by any real, Motorhead fan?! It's strong and one of the toughest songs on offer bloody excellent!

The blistering, Time Is Right shows the band cranking out that true and tried formula that's been a winner for 30 years - if it ain't broke ...!

Closing this very satisfying album is, The Thousand Names Of God which is tough, tenacious and brutal, all in one a great slab of hard rock with the addition of some nice slide guitar licks, rounding out a rather great album by this 'legend' act.

MOTORHEAD's
Motorizer - delivers an extremely tenacious, varied and consistent release that all MOTORHEAD fans should love! While it still doesn't live up to the magnificent standards of Inferno - it's a pretty dam good release regardless! - 8/10   (BEST SONG: - Rock Out)
ICED EARTH The Crucible Of Man - Something Wicked Part 2   (SPV)

Possibly, one of America's finest, ever traditional heavy metal acts, ICED EARTH - have an almost 'legend' status among many of the
worlds' metalheads. In a career spaning over 25 years, ICED EARTH now have their own 'legacy' in the history of metal and over the
last five years the bands' popularity has definitely gained momentum.

Some will disagree but a major reason that there was a new found interest in the band was due to ex-JUDAS PRIEST singer,
Tim 'Ripper' Owens joining as singer and contributing vocals to their excellent 2005 album,
The Glorious Burden!

The name ICED EARTH means a hell of a lot to their devoted die hard fans - so much so that the band made a major decision in firing
Owens in 2007 after again contributing vocals to his second Iced Earth album and was on tour promoting that, very release!

The album was,
Framing Armageddon Something Wicked Part 1 - a brilliantly executed and formidable product, that definitely delivered on all fronts! The album was a 'masterpiece' with it's story weaving throughout, featuring good songs by an excellent unit topped off with Owens incredible voice!

Well, here we are a year later and the new ICED EARTH album,
The Crucible Of Man Something Wicked Part 2 has arrived. Gone is Owens in comes original screamer, Matt Barlow with equally a good metal voice with power and range but he's not up to Owens standard that's for sure!

It all depends on your choice of singer, some will love the return, others like me well?! Replacing singers is always a hit 'n miss scenario, let's face it. The fans who buy
the records, go to concerts etc. get fairly pissed off when singers get the flick, look at Motley Crue for example. Out went Vince Neil, in came John Corabi and the album stiffed, even though it's probably one of the bands' better albums?!

Reinstated ICED EARTH singer Matt Barlow's voice is good, I actually quite like it his timber reminds me of KISS' Paul Stanley, in places, especially in the higher register albeit with more grunt and depth. After 2 albums with Ripper, it'll take me a few more listens but I cannot fault the product that's herein.

Barlow does an amazing job, with some outstanding vocals, ducking, weaving, soaring it's all here, complete with layers of backing vocals, a great job. The band, as to be expected sounds like a well oiled machine, crushing all who stand before them with an intensity that's second to none.

The songs pick up where
'Part 1' left off, with a collection of tunes all interlocked with the theme of the album, providing another  'masterpiece' of metal that sounds,
alive and kicking! Whether it's the up tempo menacing metal of songs like, Behold The Wicked Child, The Revealing, The Dimension Gauntlet, Sacrificial Kingdoms,
Divide and Devour all deliver killer riffs, great melodies and all are crushing metal tunes.

We have a number of medium paced, melodramatic metal tunes that pack a wallop via, Crucify The King, Crown Of The Fallen and Minions Of The Watch all having a that crunch that makes 'em work beautifully! The tune, I Walk Alone - has a hint of nu-metal in places but thankfully it's kept to a bare minimum!

A couple of ballads creep in, as to be expected they're glorious in execution and sound, Harbinger Of Fate, A Gift Or A Curse,  Something Wicked Part 3 and Come What May, all having their own certain charm.

The continuing story created by main man, John Schaffer is a complete work with it's sci-fi 'concept' which either is or isn't your thing. Most of the songs still sound cool enough to be heard on their own, but when listened to in it's entirety it's just like going to the movies, well almost!

Musically speaking, ICED EARTH's
The Crucible Of Man - Something Wicked Part 2 - is a great success, following up Part 1 with an album equal to it's predaccessor, delivering an excellent product which should please many, many fans?! A near faultless piece of work!  - 9/10   (BEST SONG: - Behold The Wicked Child)
EVERGREY Torn  (SPV)

I thought EVERGREY's last release, the fabulous Monday Morning Apocalpse (2006) was an excellent, flowing hard-ass hard rock release.
While there were elements of nu-metal in places, the band basically are a tenacious metal act with some excellent melodies, great grooves,
commerical appeal and some dam fine songs!

Well, here we are 2 years later and the new EVERGREY album,
Torn is here! This is their debut for new label, metal heavy weights SPV!
Firstly, the production is faultless, with a slick yet heavy sound throughout, it sounds very 'pro-tools' to me. Some love that sound with it's
almost layered thickness, like an early 70's porn stars bush! Personally, I like my music like my women - geniune with a brazilian!

Musically speaking, the sound of EVERGREY hasn't changed too much, the tough grunt the band is still apparent as is the impeccable
playing but to me, it's the songs. It's nothing to do with the quality, that's still here in bucket loads with the bands' usual display of finesse but the
problem lies with the direction itself.

Gone, is a free flowing band with excellent groove and now we get an almost mechanical beast by comparison. Let me explain, none of the tunes herein grab you by the scruff of the neck and make you pay attention long enough to really satisfy or go wow! Sure there's some cool riffs, but there's not one melody line that sticks in your head - that's what missing on this new CD! The songs are delivered to perfection, it's just that most simply don't have that special something, to make them memorable!

Previously, EVERGREY had their own distinct sound and groove which kicked ass in every way. The new CD however, displays a band not dissimilar in sound to EVERGREY but sounding more like an imitation trying to to cash in on next 'big' thing?!

Hey, it's just my opinion, I really loved their last album and after repeated listening of the new CD,
Torn - it's a OK product but I personally think it's far inferior and nowhere near as satisfying as EVERGREY's last CD, the magnificent, Monday Morning Apocalpse!

I personally think a lot of fans will be disappointed with this release, only time will tell  -
5/10   (BEST SONG: - When Kingdoms Fall)
METALLICA Death Magnetic  (Universal)

Being one of the world's most successful hard rock/heavy metal acts, METALLICA have a mighty reputation to uphold! As numerous
veteran acts have discovered over time, there's always pretenders waiting to pounce and steal your crown.

The bands' last album,
"St. Anger" - was poorly received by many long-time, hard core fans and musically speaking it was a disaster!
No killer songs, no killer riffs, hideous production - fans world wide, were truly concerned that METALLICA had made a dog of an
album that could send the band into the land of obscurity. Had they blown their bolt ...so to speak?!

Well, I can confirm that the band have rebounded rather well with their new CD,
"Death Magnetic" with METALLICA, returning to their
hard rock' era with a fairly satisfying product. It's not up to the standard of the early years of the band but there are moments of the
'speed metal' era but they are few and far between with the basic sound throughout being the 'breakthrough' era.
(ala "Black Garage.")

There's nothing the likes of,
Battery, Whiplash, For Whom The Bells Toll or Master Of Puppets - here but there's plenty on offer to satisfy the majority of fans. Production is handled well by 'legend' producer, Rick Rubin who has produced very successful acts, THE CULT, SLAYER, RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS to name a few, with a good
strong sounding product. It's dry, crisp and thankfully there's not to much tweaking, even though I suspect some 'pro tool' use!

Song wise, My Apocalypse is the only 'old school' METALLICA song herein, whipping away like a frenzy, while That Was Just Your Life is remeniscemt of '
Ride The Lightning' in places with plenty of bite and speed rolled into one, although it pales in comparison to 'RTL'. The tough sounding, End Of The Line is pure magic, steamrolling it's way into your heart, another winner!

Most of the songs clock in around between 6 to 9 minutes in length, personally some of the tunes would sound far better had they been trimmed a little in places. The new CD is a real listening album compared to some of the bands' previous material. There isn't a song that's as rememberable and instantaneous as say, 'Enter Sandman'
but there's a shit load of tough grooves and decent riffs that should please most?!

Broken, Beat & Scarred is a tough chest beater with, The Day That Never Comes is a semi mega ballad along the lines of Unforgiven, with the latter part double timing to the end. Coincidently, a song titled, Unforgiven III picks up where it's previous name sake left off.

The band pulls out all the stops on, All Nightmare Long which is definitely one of the stand outs here with a 'classic' sound, possessing a killer riff, cool grooves and a menacing song to boot! It's a grinding relentless riff that fires up, Cyanide another cracker of a tune with all the right elements, making it a winner!

Another tough tune, The Judas Kiss a typical 'classic' METALLICA song with grunt, riffs, ecetera. The album's standout is the almost Black Sabbath groove of, Suicide & Redemption the song being an instrumemntal and having a marauding riff, a great groove, a cool solo and one tough sounding song excellent!

METALLICA's,
"Death Magnetic" almost has all the right ingriedents to satisfy most people who LOVE the band. There will be some who will miss the 'hit single' type tunes of their commercial era with none of the songs herein having that magic spark. Both Testament and Metal Church's latest offerings, far outshine this product!

A good return that sees METALLICA back on track with a reasonable, consistent effort that unfortunately doesn't reach the glorious heights, some of us were hoping for.
To me it's a couple of songs short of a being a killer return and there's too many tunes, that outlive their usefullness -  good, but far from great  -

BUCKCHERRY Black Butterfly  (Atlantic)

In a year of so many outstanding album releases by numerous hard rock acts, to state that Los Angeles based hard rockers,
BUCKCHERRY deliver one of the years finest, is gonna raise some eyebrows!

My love for the band is tenfold, I personally rate BUCKCHERRY as one of the best US rock acts of the last decade! When the band
shot to fame in 1999 courtesy of their impresive self titled debut and the hit single, 'Lit Up' countless hard rock acts were chasing
the grunge/nu-metal wave but BUCKCHERRY were championing ass kickin' rock! The bands' second album,
"Time Bomb" (2001)
was good but suffered from too many throwaways, with only half the album standing up. After 2 albums the band got lost for a
couple of years, their 'comeback' release of late 2005,
15 - showed that the band were a serious contender again!

This very site rated BUCKCHERRY's
15 as our Album Of The Year in 2006 and 12 months later the US fell in love with the band, through a number of hit single/videos including the runaway hit, 'Crazy Bitch' - pushing the above mentioned album past the 1 million units sold, a very big deal in today's burning world! The only other hard rock act to achieve platinum sales in recent years in the US was Velvet Revolver's debut CD, Contraband!

So as you can imagine, I personally had high expectations - until I pushed play and BUCKCHERRY filled my ears, doing what comes naturally! Yes, my friends I'll state here and now, that BUCKCHERRY's
Black Butterfly is gonna be a serious contender for my 'Album Of The Year I think it's THAT good!

Musically, it's not a carbon copy of their previous release, as many would of expected! The formula is basically the same, kicking ass as always as well as the usual softer side, to the band. Basically, it's a reboot of the band who after 2 years of touring have gelled into a well tuned unit, which can be heard throughout this release.

Kicking things off we launch into album opener, Rescue Me a straight down the line up tempo rocker, stomping it's way into your world, complete with a very infectious chorus excellent!  Crunching into second place is, Tired Of You another stomping ass kicking hard rock tune that's typical BUCKCHERRY balls, swagger, crunch, a great catchy melody line and above all else, that groove!

The sheepish groove of, Too Drunk .. - is gonna be the party song, lyrically a funny tune, sure to be a BIG favorite with many?! Track four, Dreams sounds almost pop by comparison with a strong, rowdy chorus that has single/video written all over it? The rollicking, Talk To Me is an up tempo rocker with wit, charm and another infectious, commercial chorus, while the romp of, A Child Called It again showcasing melody and both songs sounding more like a modern day CHEAP TRICK in places!

It's ballad time courtesy of, Don't Go Away already a favorite with many, with it's casual groove and radio friendly feel, a typical BUCKCHERRY formula that works well here also. Back to cranking rock via, Fallout a blistering rocker with a punk attitude, a lean, nasty song that hits hard. Another radio tune, Rose I expect another future single/video has all the right moves to make it a 'hit' with excellent groove, catchy chorus and an almost - country rock feel, and yes it works!

Depending on your taste, All Of Me is great or throwaway! I like the idea but to me it's a bit of a letdown, a bland camp fire tune - one point deducted! Luckily, we get redemption through one of the album's highpoints as far as I'm concerned! The strangely titled, Imminent Ball Out is a cracker of a song with an almost ROSE TATTOO tempo and attack, a chest beating, hard assed rocker all the way to the finish line.

Unfortunately, the album should of finished there, ending a fairly satisfying release but the closing tune, Cream in this case didn't rise to the top with this song being, all over the place musically and really leaves a bad taste in your mouth another point deducted! (I won't count the 2 x bonus tracks because they're fairly lame!)

BUCKCHERRY's
Black Butterfly is a great follow up to the bands' previous albums, delivering a good product that should please many who love the band. I do like the band and while I think it's a good record - especially from a production point . However I'd rate around the same as, "Time Bomb" - infact TB is heavier! That's the problem, too much time, they should of done it it 2 weeks like "15"! Overall, a solid hard rock release, Will it go platinum in the US - only time will tell?! -  7/10
(BEST SONG: - Tired Of You)
INDEX
AC/DC Black Ice (Sony/BMG)

"Album Of The Year"? Not quite!  Australia's biggest rock export, the 'legendary' AC/DC - return after a 8 year absence with their
brand new album,
Black Ice!

Upon pressing play - you instantly smile to yourself knowing full well that  luckily, some things never change - and that's what I love
about AC/DC! That unmistakable groove, those catchy good time riffs, those sing-a-long choruses, great guitar licks and a band
that is one of the best, a well oiled machine, it's just - sheer poetry in motion!

As far as the overall sound goes, it's a stripped back to basics
(less is more!) sound, almost like a good quality 'demo' sound with
everything crisp, sharp and with a real genuine quality! A number of hard rock acts over the last 12 months have gone with a
- '
back to basics' production sound, which let's be honest is what most people want to hear! Where as alot of European acts recently
seem to be heading the opposite direction production wise!

Produced by Brendan O'Brien, along with Mike Fraser (engineering and mixing) have done an excellent job, capturing the band in all their glory, something he does
extremely well. Anyone who remembers O'Brien's production of arguably the best ever Stone Temple Pilot album,
Core- know exactly what I'm talking about!

Musically speaking, this is what AC/DC have been doing for close to 35 years and it's really not that different to countless releases before it. There are however, a few ideas song wise that AC/DC have never really ventured into before, so that alone makes this an interesting release. It's definitely one of the better albums featuring veteran vocalist, Brian Johnson possibly the best, most consistent album by the band in many years. While it never reaches the standards of the magnificent,
"Back In Black" it does however equal what many consider to be another of AC/DC's strongest Brian Johnson releases for consistentency, "Ballbreaker"!

Most people on planet Earth, have already heard or seen the first single/video, Rock N Roll Train which is safe to say is, 'classic' Acca Dacca all the way! There's a couple of standard tunes, Wheels and She Likes Rock N Roll   delivering what you expect and easily satisfiying the majority of fans.

For those who crave something with a little more substance, well you won't be disappointed as the standout songs herein, really are a cut above the rest for numerous reasons. Firstly, the excellent title track, Black Ice has a killer groove, cemented in place with a half time chorus, creating a quite memorable and easily the album's heaviest track. Not to be outdone, War Machine is probably my personale favorite, a ball busting tune that will be a BIG favorite with many!

The totally unique feel of, Stormy May Day which is the first use of slide guitar by Angus Young, ever as far as I can remember?! Whether it's a homage to an old  friend, ROSE TATTOO's late, 'legendary' slide guitarist, Pete Wells or not, the song sounds so much like the TATT's it's uncanny, possessing a dirty blues groove - a definite standout! For those who don't know - both bands shared the same label, management in Australia, during the late 70's. The slow grind of, Decibel is another highlight,
with a dirty riff, killer groove and that something special that only this band has in it's veins! Surprisingly, it sounds very similar to Joe Cocker's,
'Leave Your Hat On'!

That's not all, other notable inclusions are, Spoilin' For A Fight and Big Jack both being 'classic' up tempo anthem rockers that work exceedingly well. The mid tempo pace of, Money Made which features a
'Back In Black' type groove, making it a very, very tasty tune. The mid paced groove of, Skies On Fire will also please many with the band doing what comes so naturally and boy can you hear it!

The most surprising songs are, Anything Goes which is almost pop by AC/DC standards with a tune that's reminiscent of British 'legends, THE WHO! Another song that might ruffle some feathers is AC/DC's first light 'n shade tune, Rock N Roll Dream which will surprise many, yours included but fear not it's a very good song showing AC/DC trying something new musically speaking. Anyone who ever thought Brian Johnson couldn't sing - will definitely have egg on his/her face when you hear this song!

Rounding out this package is, Smash N Grab a mid paced monster complete with gang band backing vocals, a definite high light while, Rocking All The Way has a
'Live Wire' groove that's pure magic!

AC/DC's
"Black Ice" is a good solid return, equal to many of the 'Old School' hard rock bands who have released, good, consistent products this year. While it's not a killer - and let's face it, no 'veteran act' has ever released countless killer album after killer album, AC/DC's "Black Ice" could very well be, the finest album by the band since
their break through hit album,
"Black In Black"! - 8/10   (BEST SONG: - War Machine)
GIRLSCHOOL Legacy (Wacken)

The year 2008 will be long remembered by many veteran metalheads - as the year of amazing 'come back' albums! Well over a dozen
'old school' metal acts instantly spring to mind, all having released their best products in years!

The list is impressive to say the least, it's virtually a who's who of Metal names like: Whitesnake, Dokken, Motorhead, Def Leppard,
Testament, Motley Crue, Judas Priest, Journey, Metal Church, Buckcherry, Metallica and recently, AC/DC!

Well, now you can add British all female metal 'legends' GIRLSCHOOL to the list, with a very decent return album that celebrates their
30 years of ass kicking!

GIRLSCHOOL - for those of you under 30 years old, are the longest surviving all girl band ever! Forget those try-hard bands like,
The Bangles, L7, Vixen, etc. GIRLSCHOOL is what an all woman rock band,
should sound like!

The band first came to prominence via a tour supporting, MOTORHEAD on their 'Overkill' tour in 1979 and over the coarse of the next 3 years, GIRLSCHOOL released, three very good consistent albums -
Demolition (1980), Hit N Run (1981) and Screaming Blue Murder (1982). If memory serves me correct, MOTORHEAD's producer of the time, Vic Maile - even produced their albums? I fondly remember seeing GIRLSCHOOL - belting out numerous film clips at the time, back in the day!

Sorry, flash-back - all three records showcased the toughest, young female rock band to ever emerge, only the mid 70's Los Angeles based all female act, THE RUNAWAYS came close, albeit a far distant second.

Anyway, here we have GIRLSCHOOL's new album,
Legacy - and to be perfectly honest it's the best recording by the band since the above mentioned, 'hey days'!

Now middle aged women, who still kick serious freckle live, GIRLSCHOOL are a little older, a little wiser and definitely still kicking ass in a major way. The production is good, crisp, heavy and thankfully not over produced. The songs are strong and in most cases deliver what you want from this powerhouse quartet.

Original members, Enid Williams, Denise Dufort and Kim McAuliffe are joined by Jackie Chambers who replaces original guitarist, the late Kelly Johnson R.I.P. - who
sadly passed away last year.

Musically speaking, there's more than enough meat here to satisfy any long-time fans as well as introduce themselves to a whole new generation. Song wise, it's a tough, it's tenacious and definietly great to hear women kicking serious butt. In over 30 years, not one all female band I've heard comes close to these gals!

If opening song, Everything's The Same a crunching hard rocker of the highest calibre, doesn't convince you then you're still probably listening to your PINK albums shame on you! Well it's time to make amends and give that rubbish to your younger siblings. From The Other Side is a medium paced cracker, that'll have you dancing around your lounge room, trust me or I Spy which has a tough, slow grind topped off with some great gang vocals, a very tasty tlittle tune.

We lift the bar ever so slighly to one of the albums' high points, a personal favorite, Spend Spend Spend has it all, killer riff, great groove and well I'm a sucker for a song that has it all, and this one most definitely does! We get a rather infectious, quirky riff for, Whole New World topped off with a strong anthem chorus, another good song. GIRLSCHOOL show why they're the best female band on the planet through another 'highlight' track from this impressive album, Just Another Day a belter of a song, again featuring a crunching riff, great melody and above all else a geniune kick ass attitude!

Medium paced rocker, Legend has a interresting groove and strong chorus, while Still Waters features a little light 'n shade feel but still cranks hard and mean when it needs too! The bands' long association with MOTORHEAD, bascially the bands' main infuence is exemplified by a cover of the 'legends' tune, Metropolis -  and I've got to say it's a very good version, featuring ex-Motorhead guitarist, Eddie Clarke on solo duties.

It's back to relentless driven rock via, Don't Mess Around rollercoasting out of the speakers complete with double kick dum ending excellent stuff! The almost epic sounding, Zeltgeist has a almost power metal groove, stampeding across the plains, being a bruising workout. Just when you thought the girls can't get any heavier, well you'de be wrong as, Don't Talk To Me is an thundering monster with an almost punk attiutude, steamrolling and crushing everything in it's path simply marvelous! Oh I forgot to tell you, Lemmy makes a guest appearance which only adds the cherry to the icing!

A bonus version of, I Spy featuring Ronnie James Dio and Tony Iommi sounds cool while the feel of, London zips along at a frantic pace, possessing that 'American Pie' mentality and it works very well! As stated above, there are a number of 'special guests' herein including, JJ French and Eddie Ojeda (Twisted Sister), Neil Murray and Phil Cambell also drops in to help out.

Closing off this very good product is a 'classic' written by girls, 'back in the day' originally featured on their debut album,
"Demolition". Re-recorded and still sounding as heavy as ever, Emergency sounds just as good as it did yesterday! It's slighly different but only an old dog like me, notices these little things - a driving anthem that would make any band proud!

We've all heard the expression: the difference is like 'shit and diamomds' right? Well, I can tell you the new GIRLSCHOOL
"LEGACY" is the diamonds and well, wait until
you hear the new GNR album .... you'll hear what I mean!

GIRLSCHOOL's
"LEGACY" is a serious contender for, "Album Of The Year" I Shit You Not!

It easily rubs shoulders with the recent returns by Metallica and AC/DC not to mention probably, another 20 consistent albums released this year!  I'm sure Kelly is looking down from that great gig in the sky, proud as punch!  For newcomers, this is a great place to discover the best all female band on the planet,
you f**kin' better believe it!

GUNS 'N ROSES Chinese Democracy (Geffen)

Once upon a time in a galaxy, far, far away Los Angeles infact, there once lived a fire breathing, ass-kickin' hard rock band called,
GUNS 'N ROSES. They
were the biggest band on the planet, in their time with their 1987 full length platter, Appetite For Destruction -
was the - 'must have' record for a whole generation, with sales eventually reaching 20 million!

While their debut,
Live Like A Suicide EP released 1986 (re-released in 1988 as part of the "Lies" release) created interest among
'hard core' metalheads, it certainly didn't set the world on fire like 'Appetite' did. I remember quite vividly, when I purchased 'AFD' -
thinking how good the album was and how strange that it took the World - another 12 months to fall in love with the band.
It wasn't until, 'Sweet Child In Mine' the 3rd single after, It's So Easy and Welcome To The Jungle that everyone took notice,
and we all know how that turned out.

The concept, daring and sheer, bloody luck of releasing the
Use Your Illusion - Parts 1 & 2 albums in 1991, coinciding with the release of motion picture, TERMINATOR 2 which featured, You Could Be Mine the first new Gunners rocker since 'Appetite', was a brave move that paid off handsomely for all those involved!

GUNS ' N ROSES were gods, they're are probably the most successful band I've seen in the last 30 years of being a metalhead! Let's not forget that AC/DC, Metallica and
Def Leppard all notched up equally impressive, multi million phenomenal album sales and were branded  - the 'biggest' band in the world, in their time!

While the above mentioned acts, have all redeemed themselves this year with their very good return products, I'm afraid the same cannot be said about the new,
GUNS 'N ROSES long, long, overdue return,
Chinese Democracy!

With close to 11 years in the making and at a reported cost of over $14 million dollars talk about a waste of money! It's quite possible that this, new GNR album will go down as the 'worst' release of 2008 - in many people's eyes!

As expected the production is pretty overblown but some like that approach. Vocalist, Axl Rose - is now the only original member of the band and his voice, vocals and  melodies are all fine, with his typical -'cat on a hot tin roof' squeal sounding great!

There's a number of problems including, the band which dare I say it, sounds like a GNR cover band! There's no real grunt, the songs just don't have that special magic, spark, venom whatever, that made you want jump up out of your seat, grab a beer, a hot broad and have a great f**kin' time - rockin' your asses off!

The difference is like, comparing automobiles. Original GNR is a like V8 Mustang, while the new band is a 4 cylinder Hyundai! Having seen the band live in Australia in 1988 and 1993 I know which version I prefer! The 1988 GNR was a monster, breathing fire and could blow virtually, any band in the world off the stage! Sure they were a little sloppy in places but ... when the band returned to Australia in '93 - they were like a cabaret band compared to the fuel hungry beast of '88! From what I can hear herein, it's only become worse!

The only songs here that have a hint of decency are: Scraped, Shackler's Revenge and probably, If The World the rest seem rather lame to me! The biggest reason for this disappointment is that the original songwriters are not here THATS THE PROBLEM! Without, Slash, Duff and Izzy writing good, ass kicking hard rock songs well, that's what basically missing here. It's a like baking a cake without the right ingredients, it falls flat!

Despite what I say, after all it's just an opinion - there will be those who will
love the new GUNS 'N ROSES album, Chinese Democracy - but they too, like the band have moved on - all getting a little older, with a couple of kids and wife or wives in tow, a mortgage etc. so they too like GNR have mellowed with age! - 3/10

TWISTED SISTER Live At The Astoria  (DVE)

Are you sitting comfortably? Let us begin when I was a pimply faced kid in the early 80's the UK magazine, KERRANG - was our Metal bible!
It gave the world's 'metal-heads' - all the info on the genre that was becoming bigger by the minute. That was then ... today - the magazine still
exists, but in today's world, TWISTED SISTER still stands, Loud 'N' Proud!

If you thought that TWISTED SISTER were just another 'old school' band trying to cash in ... well you'd be dead wrong as this excellent new
live album release titled,
Live At The Astoria easily demonstrates.

TWISTED SISTER are one of New York's finest ever metal acts other personal 'Big Apple' favorites are, MANOWAR and CIRCUS OF POWER
all delivering bone crushing hard rock anthems - with a genuine metal edge.

The full original line-up is on board and they blaze through 16 songs, most of which ignited Europe as the bands' major fan base, outside of New York City before their mainstream 'breakthrough' in 1984. In my humble opinion, their 1983 release,
You Can't Stop Rock 'N' Roll - was the bands' best ever release, featuring the most consistent  album produced to date. The bands' debut, Under The Blade - was a good, tough start but the band become HUGE through their 1984 album, Stay Hungry - which broke the band internationally.

Featuring 5 killer songs off 'YCSRAR' are - The Kids Are Back, Like A Knife In The Back, I Am I'm Me, Ride To Live and the title track all sounding absolutely mean and nasty here in all their glory!

There's also 4 tracks off, 'SH' being The Price, S.M.F. - as well as the 2 mega hit video/singles, We're Not Gonna Take It and I Wanna Rock all sounding just as tough and relevant today.

For the 'long-time' fans of the band, there are 3 'classic' songs from their meaty debut platter given the usual TWISTED F**KIN SISTER treatment here, Destroyer, Under The Blade and Shoot 'Em Down all sound truly awesome! There's also the title track off the 4th album,
"Come Out And Play" sounding far tougher here than when originally released as well as, What You Don't Know (Sure Can't Hurt You) and The Fire Still Burns rounding out this excellent excursion in 'old school' metal at it's best.

As most of you can see, there's an excellent selection of tunes herein, all sounded good in their studio form and here live, well! That's the difference that separates a
REAL band from crap the ability to record an album and then play it LIVE sounding virtually, no different to what's on the record. Believe me, in over 30 years of seeing numerous metal acts, that have toured Australia TWISTED SISTER are definitely a band that delivers!

This new TWISED SISTER CD/DVD,
Live At The Astoria - is an absolute cracker of a release, featuring one of histories, finest US metal acts caught live - in all their glory before a hungry, full house at the Astoria excellent stuff! - 9/10   (BEST SONG: - Like A Knife In The Back)
POISONBLACK A Dead Heavy Day  (Century Media)

Finland's hard-assed bruising goth rockers, POISONBLACK storm back with another slab of crushing, hard rock with their third album,
"A Dead Heavy Day".

Basically, the new album is filled with the same - tenacious, uncompromising sonic assault POISONBLACK fans crave and it picks up
where their previous excellent, venonmus release -
"Lust Stained Despair" left off.

While being slightly less commerical than it's above predaccessor the quality of songs herein, is equal to what POISONBLACK have
delivered before - with one of the meatiest, guitar sounds around! I absolutely
love their guitar sound, it's as - hard as nails, combined
with some excellent grooves in their songs, with the lyrical content as usual, sometimes humerous, sometimes dark, sometimes interesting and sometimes downright tough to me, this is what a true metal band should deliver in today's world ... and all without a dog barking growl within ear shot!

Songwise, we get the bulldozing rocker, Diane this is a f**king 'classic' song possessing a crushing riff that Metallica, use to write in their sleep! This song has everything that a 'metalhead' could ever ask for, killer riff, stampeding drums, soaring chorus cool solo, a great song! The Goth rock cruncher, Left Behind shows powder puffs like HIM - how to write, decent ass-kickin' hard rock songs. The swagger and dynamics in, Bear The Cross delivers a first class lesson in composing, heavy, melodic metal of the highest calibre and oh yes, it's has a commerical groove to boot, very impressive indeed!

For those craving more Goth rock - then look no further than, A Dead Heavy Day capturing a almost surreal feel musically, some may even refer to it as a ballad?! The slow doom grind of, Me Myself and I will also appeal to many who favor the black eye liner, with a menacing medium pacer, complete with commerical chorus that's very tasty. We get the moody ballad, X which shows some great light 'n shade and reminds me of dare I say it, Sentenced which is always a good thing. Another trip down light 'n shade territory courtesy of, The Days Between which sort of just ambles away.

Stomping adrenaline charged rock via, Human Compost which delivers a full throttle thoroughbred while the chunky, Hate Love bruises it's way into the world. Another tough tune is, Lowlife cantering along before galloping head long into, beating all before it into submission. The closing tune, Only You Can Tear Me Apart is a sombre way to finish and wraps up a fairly satisfying album.

POISONBLACK's third album release
, "A Dead Heavy Day" delivers what their fans love about this highly underrated metal act. This is a blistering collection of heavy sounding hard rock, with subtle Goth rock undertones, a formula that's very appealing to many not just lovers of modern metal music. Not quite as strong as their last but definitely still, a very good product!  - 8/10   (BEST SONG: - Diane)
