-Several eircom League clubs have expressed their anger at a ruling that bars players who participated in last years FAI Intermediate Cup from playing in this season's FAI Cup. That rules out many players like St. Pat's midfielder Kevin Fahey and numerous players from Division One clubs.

-Longford Town manager Alan Mathews has warned that eircom League officials are out of sync with the speed of the modern game. As full-time football spreads through the country, he feels that referees and linesman are not keeping up with the pace of the game anymore. He pointed to Tuesday's controversial defeat to Shelbourne, where linesman Mick Gillivan and referee Dave McKeon made two decisions that cost the Flancare Park side the match. Mathews warned "Referees  and linesmen need to look at their physical condition. As the game is getting full-time and a lot faster, maybe they are losing touch. They were absolutely disgraceful decisions by the linesman"

-Ryan Casey has held talks with Kildare County and Sligo Rovers following the decision of St. Patrick's Athletic manager Eamonn Collins to allow the left-back to leave the club. A move to the Thoroughbreds is unlikely however, explained County manager Dermot Keely. He revealed "We would be interested in Ryan and we have spoken to him, but he's too rich for us"

-The Station Road outfit meanwhile, have placed last season's player of the year Cathal O'Connor on the transfer list, following a frustrating start to the season for the youngster. "He had exams and hasn't been in the team" explained Keely. "He's  too good and too expensive to be out of the team"

-Robbie McGuinness hopes to conclude talks with Shamrock Rovers and Bray Wanderers shortly, while Michael Holt has agreed to sign for Longford Town.

-Manchester United starlet Phillip Bardsley has arrived at Shelbourne on trial, with a view to the highly-rated defender securing a loan deal at Tolka Park. The 18-year-old was handed a contract by manager Alex Ferguson, just two years into a three-year scholarship with the Red Devils. And boss Ferguson is anxious to get the player into competitive action as soon as possible. United have a link with Shelbourne's schoolboy system, and Shels boss Pat Fenlon hopes Bardsley is the first of many Old Trafford youngsters to arrive at the Reds. He said "He's just signed a new contract and he was recommended by Alex, so that has to be tajen into consideration. We would have had two over, but one has been selected in the English under-19s for the European Championships in July. We'll be playing a friendly against Glentoran on Sunday and we'll have a look at a couple of lads"

-Meanwhile, Fenlon is in no rush to offer central-defender Dave Rogers a long-term deal at Tolka Park. "We'll just see how it goes, but he's done all right so far" he said.

-Elsewhere, Kildare County have completed the signing of Cork City's left defender Gareth Cronin. Cronin, 28, has previously played for Shamrock Rovers, Doncaster, Bradford and Sunderland. Cronin has played over 250 for his home side Cork City during his career, and will be a valuable asset to Dermot Keely's side.

-Shamrock Rovers' Tony Grant has won the eircom/Soccer Writers Association of Ireland player of the month award for June. Grant scored his first goal of the season in a 1-0 victory over Dublin rivals St. Pat's in the last game before the two week break for the Special Olympics. With all other clubs out of action, Grant took advantage by putting in some great displays in the green and white jersey. Grant also helped to secure the Hoop's place in the Intertoto Cup second round with two excellent performances against Odra Wodzislaw of Poland. He scored the winner in the away leg and set up Glen Fitzpatrick in the return to ensure a place in the second round.

Aidan Doyle was previously Marketing Communications Manager of Opel Ireland, while Andy Needham was a senior Account Executive with Bill O'Herlihy Communications.
