MATCH REPORT 19 July 2003 SLIGO ROVERS 2-2 KILDARE COUNTY Kildare missed out on a chance of moving up the table tonight, as they drew 2-2 in an exciting away tie with mid-table Sligo Rovers. The away side lead the match twice, but it was defensive errors by the usually solid Kildare back-line that lost them the two extra points. Debutant Mark Kenny worked very hard in a dismal first half. There were only a handful of chances with Ollie Keogh getting the best chance for the home side after 9 minutes only for in-form Russell to save his shot. Shay Zeller had a couple of chances for the Thoroughbreds but they did not really trouble Mark Cobey in the Sligo goal. The second half, however, was the direct opposite to the first and was extremely entertaining. Just two minutes into the second half Kildare had a clear penalty appeal turned down by the referee and linesman who didn't see Philip Hughes being pulled down by McNamara. Kildare were unlucky not to take the lead with two separate attempts just minutes later, when Philip Hughes and Barry O'Connor both shot wide. Almost on the hour mark, the visitors took the lead when Ben Whelehan scored from Mark Kenny's well-placed free kick. Exactly on the hour mark, Sligo had brought the game level. Fans favourite Paul McTiernan broke through the defence and equalised for Rovers. Sligo almost doubled their score when Ian Rossiter's free kick hit the post. On 77 minutes, Keely brought on Alan Kelly who once again changed the game. Almost immediately, Damien Brennan's cross found Kelly who laid it off for Shay Zeller to hit home. With just over five minutes left of normal time, Kildare were again picking the ball out of the net. Rossiter made an easy run down the wing, and his cross found substitute McLoughlin who was more than willing to put it in the net. County almost took the lead and the three points deep into extra time, but unfortunately Ben Whelehan's header hit the post.
