MATCH REPORT 12 July 2003 KILDARE COUNTY 1-0 KILKENNY CITY Kildare's newest acquisition Gareth Cronin scored the only goal in a lucky 1-0 win over Kilkenny City. However it was County 'keeper Wayne Russell who was the hero on the night after pulling off a number of marvellous saves. The home side started well with Philip Hughes and Alan McNevin both having good chances on goal. But it was the Cats who got the game's first real goalscoring chance when Damien Raggett went on a dangerous run in Kildare's half. However it was Wayne Russell who came away with the plaudits when he stopped Raggett's shot with his feet. With just minutes to go in the first half, Barry O'Connor was put through by Philip Hughes but his shot sailed past O'Neill's goal. Kilkenny almost immediately counter-attacked, and when Barry Wood headed from a Michael Comerford cross it looked as if it would be 1-0 to the visitors going in at the break. But Wayne Russell was on hand again to make one of the saves of the season when he pushed the ball over the bar for a corner. Alan Kelly was brought on at half time for Peter Rogers and gave Keely's men more power in attack. Just 6 minutes after coming on, Kelly was causing havoc with the Cats defence and he beat three defenders before laying the ball off to Alan McNevin who put it over. In the ten minutes of the second half, Russell was again the hero when he saved from both Ian Barry and Barry Wood. However, the only goal of the game came at the other end, when Alan McNevin's cross met the head of Richie Purdy who knocked it on for Damien Brennan, before new boy Gareth Cronin put the ball into the net with his head. Kilkenny kept trying to breach the Kildare defence and came close on two occasions, however it was not to be their night, instead it was to be Wayne Russell's. And the game ended 1-0 to the home side.
