MATCH REPORT

KILDARE COUNTY 5-3 GALWAY UNITED

This years Kildare side is almost indistinguishable from last years, with eight players making their competitive debuts in this entertaining match. Only Damien Brennan, Ben Whelehan and Alan Kelly had been with the side last season.

Dermot Keely's reshuffling of the side definitely paid off as Kildare were involved in their highest scoring win ever.

After just two minutes, Kildare were on the score sheet, with Ben Whelan scoring off an Alan McNevin free kick. Although, if he were so inclined, United man Colin Fortune could claim it was his goal.

All through the first half, Philip Hughes was a menacing threat to the Galway defence, and one lob had to be cleared off the line by Mike Quirke. Hughes did eventually find the net on 41 minutes, after a defence-splitting pass by Ray Kenny. Hughes latched onto the pass, and 'rounded the keeper to put Kildare 2-0 up.

Both managers must have given heated team-talks at half time, as the second half outdid the first in entertainment. In the 61st minute, Kildare extended their lead from an Alan Kelly corner. Richie Purdy headed the ball down for Ben Whelehan, and Whelehan was only too happy to oblige and put the ball in the net.

The following minute, Galway's day worsened as a mix-up between Billy Clery and goalkeeper Mark Rapetti led to the ball ending up in the United net once more. 4-0 to Kildare.

Galway never gave up hope, and the Kildare defence relaxed and let them back into the game. Alan Murphy scored his first of the season for United in the 68th minute with an excellent individual effort. Colin Fortune got the Galway men back into the game in the 72nd minute with a superb free kick. David Goldbey brought the match to 4-3 with just over 10 minutes to go, and it seemed as though Kildare may have thrown the game away.

But with two minutes left of normal time, man of the match, Philip Hughes scored his second and wrapped up the match for Kildare.
