MATCH REPORT
DUBLIN CITY 0-1 KILDARE COUNTY Kildare County returned to the top of the First Division last night with an unexpected win over former leaders Dublin City. After their rest during the midweek League Cup game with Athlone, Philip Hughes, Barry O'Connor, Ben Whelehan, and Alan McNevin returned to the squad in peak physical condition. The first half was very midfield-dominated with both teams battling hard for possession. Philip Hughes had the first chance of the game, but his shot went wide of Horgan's goal. The ball was in the back of the net in the 38th minute, when Richie Purdy struck from a Philip Hughes rebound. But unfortunately for County, referee D. Hannock awarded a free out for a hand-ball against Purdy. This meant that the match was level at half-time. Both teams came out more energetic in the second half, and chances were a-plenty. The home side were only kept out by magnificence from Wayne Russell in the Kildare goal. Firstly, he stopped a Trevor Gleeson free-kick, and minutes later he foiled McGauley's header and tipped it over the bar. Dublin kept challenging, and almost broke the deadlock with just over ten minutes to go, but O'Keefe headed over for short range. The match looked set to end goalless, and then Ray Kenny popped up to score his first goal for Kildare, and put them back on top. Alan Kelly lofted his free-kick into the box, where he found Richie Purdy, who headed across for Kenny to score in the 85th minute.
