MATCH REPORT
ATHLONE TOWN 2-2 KILDARE COUNTY Kildare's first match in the League Cup continued their unbeaten streak to five matches. This time it was a score draw with Athlone in St. Mel's Park. County manager Dermot Keely used the match to rest some key players, because his aim this season is promotion. Ray Scully and Philip Gorman were given their first starts of the season. Athlone started well, and took the lead after just two minutes. Speedy striker STephen Kelly headed home a well-taken Stuart Holt freekick. Holt showed that that beautiful free was not a fluke, as he went close to scoring himself from a 25 yard free in the first half. Athlone Town led 2-0 at half time when Mark Sherlock scored on his debut in the 42nd minute. Keely made two substitutions at half time, and reverted back to a 4-4-2 formation. Keely has made very effective changes this season, and this match was no different. Kildare battled harder and showd more determination on and off the ball. In the 64th minute, after McNevin's corner found Philip Gorman in the box, his header had to be cleared off the line, only for Richie Purdy to pick up the rebound and drill it home. The Thoroughbreds lived up to their name, and continued to battle for the ball. Just six minutes after Purdy's goal, the match was levelled. Philip Hughes' hard work paid off and he set up Alan McNevin, who scored a short range effort. It was McNevin's first goal for County, and even better, it came against his old club, Athlone. Kildare had a chance to win the match denied when Philip Hughes' shot ricocheted off the post when he was one on one with Moran in the Athlone goal.
