MATCH REPORT

01 August 2003

ATHLONE TOWN 2-3 KILDARE COUNTY

New County manager Eric Hannigan got off to a winning start when Kildare County beat Athlone Town by the odd goal in 5 at St. Mel's Park. Hannigan was expected to come away with the three points, as going into the match his side were placed 4th whereas Athlone were second from bottom.

Hannigan only made one change to Dermot Keely's side who drew against Sligo two weeks ago. It was a necessary change - Danny O'Leary replaced Wayne Russell in the County net.

County were close to taking a very early lead, when Barry O'Connor's shot was saved in the first minute. Mark Kenny was next to trouble the Athlone goal, but his shot was pushed over the bar.

They finally took the lead in the forty-first minute, when Philip Hughes passed onto Barry O'Connor whose shot was saved by Town 'keeper Connaughton, but the loose ball came to Alan McNevin who easily scored.

It took almost thirty minutes of second half action, before the ball was to enter the net again. This time, Mark Kenny provided the cross for Barry O'Connor who flicked it on for Hughes to head it in.

On the seventy minute mark, Athlone clawed their way back into the game. A long ball from Harney left Rush in the clear, and he easily lobbed an approaching O'Leary.

Athlone thought they had tied the match ten minutes later, but O'Reilly was judged to have been offside.

Kildare re-extended their lead to two when Barry O'Connor was taken down in the Athlone penalty area. Hughes stepped up and calmly put the ball away. Athlone again clawed back through a Ben Whelehan own goal but it was too late, and County came away with the three points.
