He opened the 2002 season on the DL, missing the first eight games after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on March 13 to remove bone chips from right elbow. He had a great 10-game stretch from May 30 toJune 16, batting .370 with 3 doubles, a homer and 5 RBIs. He was put back onto the disabled list with a right calf strain. He was a single shy of hitting for the cycle on August 10th against Florida, going 3-for-5 with a 468-foot home run into Friday's Front Row, tied for the second longest homer in Bank One Ballpark history. He hit for the cycle Sept. 18 in San Diego, featuring a career-high two home runs, five hits and four runs scored. He then became the first player in 52 years to homer twice and complete a cycle in a nine-inning game. Aside from Barry Bonds, he had the highest batting average against right handed pitchers. He graduated in 1987 from Fontana High School, earning All-State honors in baseball and All-Conference honors on the gridiron and was offered a baseball scholarship to Stanford University. |
