Ed Sprague began and ended the season a Padre even though he was traded to the Red Sox in the middle of the season last year. The Mariners signed him in the offseason and he started in the minor leagues for a few weeks, then they brought him up. He has played some LF and 1B and has done really well as a pinch hitter. He was placed on the 15 day DL because of knee problems, but is back now.

Ed Sprague lives in Stockton, Claifornia with wife Kristen, and two daughters, Payton and Paris, and a son, Edward Nelson Sprague III . Won a gold medal in Seoul, South Korea as a member of the 1988 U.S. Olympic Baseball team. Went to Stanford University, where he helped the Cardinal to back-to-back College World Series championships as a sophomore and junior. His father, also named Ed, went 17-23 for Oakland, Cincinnati, St. Louis, and Milwaukee in 8 big league seasons and is now a scout for the Baltimore Orioles.
