Kiev60 Operating Instructions

1. Introduction

The Kiev60 TTL is a single lens reflex camera with a frame size of 6x6 cm or 6X4.5 cm if suitably modified.
The camera uses standard 120 roll-film and takes 12 exposures per roll. (16 in 6X45)
It is the ideal camera for the advanced amateur photographer who wants to move up into medium format photography.

Operational temperature range between minus 15 and +45 C.

The cameras shutter provides speeds in the range of 1/1000 to 1/2 s and manual exposure with "B" setting.
It is of the Horizontal travelling fabric curtain shutter type.

The shutter cocking mechanism is of the lever type , interlocked with the film-transport mechanism and frame counter.

The camera is focused through a ground-glass surface , micro-screen and wedges located in the centre of the field of vision of the viewfinder.
Variations in the ground-glass can be found , but most often a non lined version is fitted.

To allow the loading of film the back of the camera is opened up with a hinged door.

The frame counter resets automatically when the back of the camera is opened.

The camera provides a synch terminal for operating flash guns.

Standard the camera comes with an 80mm lens , either the Volna-3 or the 80mm Arsat. The focal length of these lenses are 80 mm , relative aperture is 1:2.8.

The lens is provided with a multilayer coating system as indicated on the lens by the letters MC. The multilayer coating upgrades the image quality , enhances its contrast due to better integral transparency and reduced light dispersion of the lens.

As this camera uses the Pentacon Six bayonet mount many lenses are available that can be fitted and used with fully automatic aperture control.
Lenses produced for the Kiev-6C camera are also suitable but many of this age were not MC lenses.
The lens mount is of the bayonet type and lenses are fixed in position with a large captive nut.

Normal use of this camera will be done with a TTL viewfinder with an internal metering system or a non-metered hood.
The viewfinder hood enables the picture to be viewed on the ground-glass with or without a magnifying lens and allows the use of the frame viewfinder for viewing.
The field of vision of the viewfinder hood measures 53x53 mm which is very close to what will be exposed onto the negative.
The prism viewfinder's field of vision measures 49x51.5 mm.

The field of vision of the interchangeable viewfinders are shown in the picture below.

- frame size on film: 56x56 mm;
- viewfinder hood field of vision: 53x53 mm;
- TTL prism viewfinder field of vision: 49x51.5 mm.

The eyepiece design allows for application of dioptre lenses.
To install the dioptre lens undo the clamping ring of eyepiece 30 , set onto the fitting socket a lens of 16 mm in diameter and fasten it by the clamping ring.

The TTL exposure meter determines the exposure time by the amount of light which has passed through the lens and is located in the housing of the prism viewfinder. Advantages and convenience of the TTL measurement system is the automatic control of all factors affecting the value of the exposure time. The meter is centre weighted and has an oval shape.

Metering area in the Kiev60

The meter can calculate measurements in the range of brightness from 1.6 to 13 000 cd/m2, in this case the following values should be taken into account: film-in-use speed (8 to 1000 units of GOST or 10 to 31 units of DIN), exposure time (1/1000 to 8 s) and diaphragm (1.4-32).

A cell of 4 V voltage (dia. 16.5 mm, length 22 mm) is used as a power source of the exposure time meter (G13 / A76 / LR44 3X cells are suitable).

On early versions of TTL meter the battery health indication is shown by the help of the lighting signal located on the viewfinder housing.
*Note - More recent versions do not have this lamp on top so discernment should be used when evaluating the power sources condition.
