The focus thread comes off and reveals this area.
It is the mechanism connecting the aperture iris with the control ring and must move freely with little resistance for correct operation.
You really do not want any grease in this area at all , perhaps just a little suitable oil on the pivot screw.

*Compare the cleanness of the rear glass element now compared to the pictures shown on the first pages.
The glass now is so clear it is almost invisible. :-)
