The Kieran Mess
Foundation
“Hope, Strength and Belief”
We are pressing ahead with the
Foundation and have now applied for charitable
status, this may take some time but in the mean time we have raised over
£1000.00 through donations from family and friends.
I will use this page of the main web
page to highlight any fundraising events etc Any one looking for information on
forthcoming events can contact me on [email protected] the next event is on
May 20th and is a
CHILDREN'S SPONSORED CYCLE. This will be
round the Isle of Cumbrae, a 9 mile flat island just of the west coast of
Scotland. All friend's are most welcome to attend this event. Just contact me on the
above e-mail address if you want to come along with the kids.
The following month,
June 3rd is the
Inaugural Goat Fell Challenge. This is open
to adults only as it is a pretty strenuous climb up Goat fell on the Isle of
Arran. A 874 mtr lump of granite. This is a full day event (7.00 am ferry) and included in the
price of £25.00 per person is the return ferry crossing and a high tea in a
local hotel after the climb. We
are all looking forward to a great day out. More updates later.
Many thanks to all family and
friends who continue to drop by and hand in donations to the Foundation. Your
generosity has be overwhelming. A special thank you to Yvonne Dowds and family
who dropped by with a cheque for £100.00. Yvonne's mum Marie used to look after
Kieran when he was a baby.

A huge to thank you to all the
children and parent's that made yesterday a Fantastic occasion. Unfortunately
the weather didn't hold out for the duration of the cycle but it was favorable
for most of the day. I'm sure all the kids had a great time and initial
estimates are, the day raised £1500.00 for the foundation. An overwhelming amount
of money that will undoubtedly go to helping us reach our goal. The turnout was
excellent with 29 kids plus parents making it a very memorable day. We will plan
to have this event annually, so kids , role up your t-shirts and pack them away
until next year.

The Famous Five
The
Thank You's- A huge thank you to ALL the children who made the day a
special one.
Well Done and thanks to Alex (
second left ) and his friend's who wanted to do something in Kieran's memory and
came up with the Cycle idea.
Special thanks to our friend's Anne
& Graham who helped put the day together and made all T-Shirts.
Thanks to Castlepark Nursery (The
Nursery that Kieran attended when he was a baby, and where Lorna works) for
generously donating £160.00 to the event.
And last but undoubtedly not least everybody
who donated or sponsored the kids, Many Thanks

Everyone a Winner !! Well Done

Yesterday we attended Kieran's school
and presented the Memorial Bench and Trophy. This was a very emotional but
enjoyable day. I'm sure Kieran would be proud to see the lovely bench taking
pride of place in the new garden that is going to be developed in his memory. We
express our thanks to all the staff for organising the day and thanks to the Rev
Sutcliffe for a wonderful service dedicated to Kieran. And most of all the
children for a beautiful rendition of one of Kieran's favorite songs - Any
dream will do. Kieran's bench and trophy will provide a lasting memory to all
children who pass through the school.
We are so proud of him.
A special thanks to JOHN, MIKE & DAVY
of BORDER AGGREGATE of STEVENSON, AYRSHIRE for providing the pebbles that will
surround the bench.

Just a short update on Saturday's
1st Goatfell Challenge, we have had an overwhelming response to the challenge since
mentioning it a few weeks ago. 30
dedicated friends and family are taking part, hoping to raise a considerable sum of money towards the Foundation. We are now
only a couple of day's away from the challenge. As I mentioned before it is an
early start. We all need to be at Ardrossan Ferry Terminal for
6.40 am, I will
distribute the Ferry tickets on your arrival. Once across in Brodick we will
catch the local bus to take us to Corrie, from here we will set up base camp and
attempt the assent !!.
The day is not a race, as
everybody has different levels of fitness and stamina . The main aim is to have fun and
enjoy the day. Hopefully we will all reach the summit, where we will get a group
photo for the web page. From here it's an easy stroll down to Brodick for the
High Tea at 4.30pm-5.00pm.The return ferry does not leave until
7.15pm so we
have plenty of time to catch up with any stragglers. Through out the day we will
have plenty of opportunities to stop for lunch and photo's. The weekend weather
forecast is very favorable so lets keep our fingers crossed for a good day.
If anybody needs clarification of
times etc please don't hesitate to call or e-mail. See you all bright and early
on Saturday.
Frank.

Well friends- WE DID IT. We had a
fantastic day yesterday. The climb was a bit more strenuous than some thought
(including myself) but we all managed to get to the top of Goatfell. The views
were stunning and the weather 1st class. I think Kieran had a hand in both. We
joked that he would be looking down watching and laughing at these 30 unfit, out
of breath people climbing 800+ mtrs in the baking heat. Nevertheless we beat the
challenge. Just as Kieran did throughout most of his illness. We put the
Foundation motto into practice "HOPE, STRENGTH and BELIEF" At the top I placed a
thistle on the cairn in memory of our brave warrior and had a few thoughts of
what might have been !!
From today's event we raised over
£900.00 and all had a fantastic time day. Thanks to all who sponsored, took part
and contributed in any way.
I will update on the events on my
return from a well earned break with Lorna to Tuscany. (Need to rest these leg
muscles for the next climb) but the Foundation total has reached a remarkable
sum of £5000.00+ already.

At the Summit.874 mtrs Well Done !!

In Memory of Kieran
Thanks to my cousin Gary for the

Just a short update on the fantastic achievement
everybody has made to Kieran's Foundation over the last few months. We have
raised an unbelievable amount since it's inauguration in March. A huge thank you
to all family , friends, work friends and kind hearted people who we have never
meet. After our brave Kieran passed away I decided to start up the Foundation.
The initial figure that we would like to have raised for the year was targeted
at £3,000.00 then it was increased up to £5,000.00.With the help of everyone we
have exceeded our target within 3 months, a fantastic achievement !!! We are now
in a position to discuss with the relevant professionals a family that can
benefit from your generosity and receive a much needed break.

Today has been a day of mixed emotions. We were
invited to Kieran's school to present the Kieran Mess Memorial Trophy to the
playground citizen of the year. The trophy will be awarded annually to a child
who shows great friendship, caring and an all round nice person throughout the
year. Although we were very proud to be here presenting the trophy you couldn't
help think what might have been. Anyway moving on the winner of the First Kieran
Mess Trophy was ALLISON COMBE a primary 7 pupil who showed that she had all the
right criteria to win the award. WELL DONE TO ALLISON!!.
- Thanks for allowing us to publish the photo.

Allison proudly showing the "Kieran Mess Memorial
Trophy" "Playground Citizen Of The Year 2006"
The school also presented The Foundation with a cheque for a
staggering £600.75, this was raised through the Fun day and also the

carried out since Feb.

Just a short update on the progress of the
Foundation- We still have not heard back from the Charities Commission re the
application for The Kieran Mess Foundation. Although this is dragging on a bit
we were told that these things take rather long to get authorisation.
This has not stopped progress with the Foundation. We
have met and had an enjoyable meeting with the family who will benefit from the
first holiday to be awarded by the Foundation. The have expressed a desire to go
to Disneyland Paris, there wish will be granted!! We will have another meeting
with them over the next couple of weeks to tie up the dates etc.
Even better news on the holiday front-I
have had discussions with a local travel agent who is more than willing to be
the official travel agent associated with the Kieran Mess Foundation. On top of
this he is going to include Kieran's Foundation on his website. Here family and
friends can access this through a link from my page and view the holidays on
offer. Any person that has registered with "Kieran's Travel Club" and purchases
a holiday from the travel agent, he will make a donation back into the Foundation.
More details to follow! !!!!! I think this is a great scheme and
will not just benefit all our family, friends and colleagues but will also
benefit the Foundation.
08.08.06
We are now in receipt of the Kieran Mess Foundation
Official Wristbands. They are now available for purchase at £2.00 each and come
in 2 sizes, Men's and Ladies/Childs which are a wee bit smaller in diameter.
Anyone wishing to purchase bands please call or e-mail with your address and
I'll post back to you. Please make cheques payable to Frank Mess as I still have
not had any conformation back from the Charities Commission.
The band has THE KIERAN MESS FOUNDATION on one side
and the web address on the other.

The web address
THE KIERAN MESS FOUNDATION
I have a further meeting with the travel agent on
Friday to confirm the travel club arrangements and get the web page up and
running. This will be a great benefit to the Foundation and I think It will
make a considerable contribution to the funds.
I have been asked by some of our friends on how much
the various fundraising events have raised over the last few months - I am now
in a position to update as we have all outstanding monies now in and the total
is standing at £7433.00 well done once again to all who have
contributed.

Good Luck to Dorothy,

Mountain on Sat 17th Sept 2006. This is one of the Munro's and is a very
challenging climb. At the top they are going to erect a plaque in memory of our
Braveheart.
All Sponsored monies are going to the Foundation.
Good Luck and Keep thinking of the Foundation Motto-
"Hope, Strength and Belief"

Thank You very much to Sarah, a friend of Kieran's
who very kindly and un-selfishly donated £10.00 of her birthday money to the
Foundation.
Thank You
23.09.06

Hopefully the weather will stay fine for the big day,
we have Dunno the Clown coming along at 1.30pm until 2.30pm.We have decided not
to have the BBQ due to the unsettled weather. You can order Kieran and Friends
calendars today and official Foundation wristbands will be available for
purchase.
Hope to see you all there and have a great time.
24.09.06

A fantastic and unbelievable show of generosity - we
would like to thank quite a few people who helped make yesterday's fun day an
overwhelming success. It has take a few weeks of hard work gathering together
goodies and making tablet but it all came together in the end. We can now
reclaim our house and shed again as pretty much everything sold with the
exception of the books, which I will donate to the Cancer Charity Shop.
We want to say thank you to each of you who donated
books, bottles, tombola gifts, home baking etc and to the many people who
donated money to the Foundation.
We had hoped for a good turnout but did not
anticipate how busy we would really be, we were so touched and surprised that so
many people attended. The good weather was definitely in our favour, when we see
what the weather is like today. We can't really thank anyone for that - or can
we!!
We would like to thank the following people who
kindly donated their time yesterday and made the Fun Day such a success :-
To Peter on the Front Door.
To Gavin and Shirley for the
donations of Coffee, Tea and Juice etc and for helping out on the day.
To Laura and Helen who had a
hot and busy job in the kitchen.
Jackie and Izzie on the home
baking stall- we had more cakes than Greggs the Baker.
Aunty Lilly and Uncle Richard
on the Books and CD's - they thought they had come down from Aberdeen for a
rest.
To Stephanie, Lizzie and Jennifer
who helped on the Tombola - frantic as it was they coped well.
To Stephanie for making the
placemats.
To Linda on the candle stall -
she turned up first only to be pushed into the corner - bless.
To Lydia who painted some great
designs on the children's faces.
To Lydia ( yes another one )
Dot and Andrew who never stopped on the bottle stall it
was so popular.
To Helen Anne for donating and
operating the Chocolate Fountain - a few hiccups to start with - but with the
help of Eileen it was very popular.
To Erin with some help from
Anne for spending hours making her crafts and selling them
all.
To Dunno the Clown for
entertaining the Kids.
To Graham for making the
Kieran's Fun day Signs and the lovely planter.
To Lawthorn Primary School for
giving us a loan of the Goals and to Callum's Dad for building them.
To our Goalie Callum - and the
manager Alex for organising the beat the Goalie. It was a
great success. Paul Le Guen needs a new goalie after yesterday.
To Gillian and Liz on the
Virgin Vie stall.
To Billy for the hire of the
Bouncy Castle.
To Ken from the Travel
Division.
To Andrea, the mad one with the
Irish Hat, thanks for helping on the home baking and the bouncy castle.
But most of all we want to thank you all for
attending , as without you all we would never have raised the fantastic some
This is a huge amount to raise in 3 hours.
We have been so busy over these last few days, we can
forget why we had the Fun Day - but we are now having time to realise just how
many people new about Kieran -our precious boy who touched so many people-that
they just wanted to be part of yesterday.
If we have forgotten to thank anybody, Sorry.
We hope to see you all again next year but until then
we have a few weeks rest until the 16th November when we hope to see some of you
at the Evening of Scottish Music. Details to follow.
Lorna will be putting her feet up for a few
weeks, after that we will have our hands full with our new arrival.
24.09.06
Well done to
Ivie, Dorothy, Jim, Lynda & Kristopher who managed to
climb the Schehallion mountain in 3hrs and 30 mins. This was all done with the
added weight of a golf club and balls, which were hit in memory of the wee man
and also a cordless drill. They very kindly erected a plaque at the summit for
the Brave heart. Thanks guys and well done.

Dorothy and Family at the top of Schehallion.

A huge and most grateful Thank You to all my new work

you all at the conference and good luck for the next few weeks.

progressing. There may be an opportunity to sponsor a family on the Lapland

Sorry it's
taken me so long to update the
Foundation web page, but there just
isn't enough hours in the day. The
Foundation is going from strength to
strength. Over the last month we have
provided additional quality to 2
families, one family just requested help
with some items to make the child that
bit more comfortable. We granted this
wish and hopefully will assist the child
over the coming months.
Another
family who I have been in touch with,
asked if they could have some time at
Centr Parcs leisure complex in Cumbria.
This was also granted and the feedback
that I have received was very positive.
The family had a fantastic time but most
of all the child recharged her batteries
and enjoyed the break.
Over the last
couple of months I have been busy
compiling a Foundation information pack.
This pack is intended to raise the
profile and awareness of the Foundation.
I have now completed this and sent out
some copies to both Yorkhill and the
Southern General Hospitals.
We have
decided on the dates for the forthcoming
events over the next months, they are -

Recent Fundraisers
Our Friend
Nicola Dodd recently ran the Glasgow
and raised a
FANTASTIC £215.00 for the Foundation.
Well Done Nicola.

Two fighting
fit young athletes recently took part in
the annual Cycle for Scotland event. An
annual event in which cyclists young and
old cycle from Glasgow to Edinburgh
along a route that totals 56 miles. This
year Kieran's Dad and my friend Andrew
decided to do it for the Foundation.
Surprisingly it was a day of torrential
rain all the way only clearing up at the
last couple of miles.
Never mind,
skin is waterproof and we complete the
challenge in approx 5 3/4 hrs. Not bad
for doing no training in the lead up to
the day. Next year we may enter a team.
Nevertheless
we raised a FANTASTIC £900.00+ with most
of the donations coming from Andrew and
his workmates. Well done and thank you
guys.

All Set to go
- Glasgow Green Sept 2007
Still Smiling after all that gruelling
work, Edinburgh.
Ps We are
slim, fit 30 year olds the pics don't do
us any justice.
