| Why kids yoga? Kids benefit from yoga in ways that go beyond the mat. It can be a great source of self-esteem as they also acquire tools for coping with stress at school as well as in social or family situations. During middle childhood, it becomes increasingly important for children to develop skills that can be a source of self-confidence for them. By this age, many kids and their peers have developed talents by which they begin to identify themselves. Children begin to feel self-conscious trying new things. There is sometimes the sense that anyone who is good at anything has to have been practicing virtually since infancy. Yoga can be a great way for kids in this age group to try something new without fearing that they will be worse than anyone else. Yoga is noncompetitive but is simultaneously demanding and is something one can excel at. In this way, yoga can be very fulfilling for children of this age group. August Camps: Kids ages 8 through 11 are invited to explore the wonderful world of yoga and meditation. Classes will involve basic meditation techniques which can be practiced easily by the students at home as well as about one hour's worth of fun yet challenging physical postures. The class will largely follow a series of poses commonly known as the primary series of Ashtanga Yoga. This yogic discipline is the traditional basis of what is commonly called Vinyasa yoga at many Western yoga studios. In addition, a portion of the class will be reserved for collage, mandala building, and group discussion. Class size is limited to 10 to ensure personalized attention and to promote a comfortable setting for the students. |
