The midget's stepfather was a brute, a beast, a staggering man of such colossal height and girth he towered over anyone unfortunate enough to be in his vicinity, least of all Stig. Possessing nowt in the way of intellect Jake effectively compensated with his fists, having hammered his way through half the county before establishing his smallholding. When he had first met Veronica's midget son, the man had taken immense pleasure in referring to him as 'Pigmy' - however he soon shortened this to 'Pig' once he and Veronica were wed, and on the rare occasions when he was in a more affectionate mood, he sometimes called Stig 'Piglet'. In deference to her cruel and boorish husband, Veronica did the same: "Hey Pig," she'd say, "Go and muck the pigs, Pig", "Go and sweep the yard Pig." The midget did as he was told, for the few times he had been idiot enough to protest had invariably resulted in a beating, and his time on the farm was spent mainly out in the fields, tilling the inarable land in all weathers, working long hours only to be kicked into bed with the odd scrag-end come sunset.
