VANESSA CARLTON - 'BE NOT NOBODY'
(15-track album/ A&M RECORDS)

What with
Alanis Morissette's 'Under Rug Swept' and now the title of this album I thought, at first, I'd turned dyslexic.
'Be Not Nobody' indeed.
Over-awed by Vanessa's extraordinary 'A Thousand Miles' pop tune that's forever being aired courtesy of radio station play-lists, I couldn't resist the promise of 10 more original tracks on this album. What's more, on the 'Special Edition' there is included a remix, 2 live tracks and a stripped-bare version of her very own 'Paradise.'
'Ordinary Day' opens the LP, and like 'A Thousand Miles,' couldn't be any less ordinary if it tried. Both those tracks, along with 'Unsung' (and its compellingly chic piano riff), are outstanding examples of songwriting. 'Unsung' is another perfect pop anthem graced with dignity and integrity, and Vanessa's vocals might remind of Alanis Morissette's singing style, while her talent behind the piano is on a par with singer-songwriter Gowan's prowess when sat in the same position of prominence.
'Sway' and 'Prince' are kept in upbeat check by Abe Laboriel Jnr's wistful drumbeats. What's more, Vanessa thwacks out a Country-rock cover of The Rolling Stones' 'Paint It Black with gusto, her vocal tones heartily floating into Kasey Chambers' territory.
I'm happy for Vanessa's success. She deserves recognition for her work, just like Nelly Furtado, Amy Studt and Avril Lavigne. If only more pop-rock loving chicks had the balls to stand up and belt out such shimmering songs to their heart's content.
The world might be a chic-er place
